Café du Monde has always been on my lists of must visits when visiting New Orleans .. I recall in the mid 50’s parking outside the café with my parents at the wheel. In those days a white coat with black bowtie waiter would come out to your car, take your order and return with a “window tray” and your order of fresh beignets in a white bag. The waiter would open the bag, pour a ton of powdered sugar into it and then shake the bag several times and set it on the tray with a stack of napkins. My parents would carefully pass a sugar coated beignet to us kids in the back seat and they would drink their Au Lait and eat a couple of beignets in the front seat. My last trip to N.O.’s a few years ago cost me 10lbs from my many visits, a couple of times a day, for coffee and no less than one plate and sometimes two of those unchanged and addictive beignets. Thanks for the memories!

It’s been far too long since I have visited Cafe du Monde and enjoyed their chicory coffee and beignets. It was fun to go back just now with you. BTW, I’d love to have one of those souvenir mugs. Don’t think they were available when I was last there.

Funny that I too have a photo of Cafe du Monde in my post this week. It’s definitely an icon and not to be missed. However, when I go back, I want to try the place near the Art Museum and sculpture park, as I understand the beignets are better and less greasy.

OMG, how terribly naughty of you to tempt us! Cafe du Monde is not just my favorite cafe in New Orleans, but quite possibly the world. If there’s something in the world more delicious than beignets heaped with powdered sugar, I can’t think of it right now.
