How could anyone resist a pretzel the size of a steering wheel? Crystal and I sure couldn’t. A taste of Shipshewana, Indiana, beckoned us, as we laughed through the golden loops of dough. The buttery aroma was already setting the stage for our two-day food adventure.

This corner of northern Indiana feels like stepping into a postcard from the 1950s, horse-drawn buggies clip-clopping down Main Street, hand-painted signs swinging above shops, and that gentle hum of small-town pace. But beneath the charm lies a culinary heartbeat, a blend of Amish heritage, farm-to-table freshness, and Midwestern creativity.

We came for a taste, but Shipshewana offered a story, told through coffee cups, picnic baskets, and plates that feel like home.

Mackinac Island in October is a feast for the senses, where history and nature intertwine against a backdrop of brilliant fall colors. The crisp autumn air carried the fresh lake breezes as we stepped onto the island. With peak tourist season winding down, we enjoyed a quieter, more intimate experience. The lack of cars and the sound of horse hooves echoing through the streets transported us to another time. As we set out to explore, we quickly realized that Mackinac Island in October offers a unique blend of tranquility, adventure, and small-town charm, making it the perfect autumn escape.

Going Car-Free

Our journey began with the ferry ride across Lake Huron from Mackinaw City. Our anticipation grew as we watched the island grow more prominent. The ferry’s gentle rocking only added to our excitement, and before long, we arrived at a place seemingly untouched by modern transportation. With cars banned from the island, horse-drawn taxis, bicycles, and foot traffic rule the roads. Stepping into The History Museum in South Bend feels like walking onto the set of A League of Their Own. One big difference is that this isn’t Hollywood magic; it’s the real story. The museum’s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) exhibit brings the history of these groundbreaking athletes to life. It showcases their impact on life beyond the silver screen. As fans of the 1992 film, this was a chance to see how fact compares to fiction. Each exhibit at The History Museum paints a vivid picture of South Bend’s pivotal role in national and local history, making it much more than just a place for baseball fans—it’s a place to understand the stories that shaped the heart of America.

Johnny Ox Pizzeria stands out with its hand-tossed dough, house-made sauces, and fresh toppings. We opted for a couple of their immense slices. We placed our order and explored the space while we waited for our meal. The lively atmosphere of Union Street Market makes it a fantastic spot for food lovers to gather and explore. Our slices featured a crispy yet chewy crust, making each bite irresistible. With so many flavors, this food hall is a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the best of Fort Wayne’s culinary offerings.

Brewpub or Gastropub?

Craft beer and gastropub fare take center stage at The Hoppy Gnome. This Fort Wayne brewery offers a cozy, inviting space for a relaxed meal. Their vast selection of house-brewed beers and nationally renowned ciders pair well with a menu focused on elevated pub classics. Crystal selected the Who Would’ve Figured burger that features fig jam and goat cheese. It must have been good, as she raved about the flavor combination. I went in a different direction and selected a couple of their street tacos. Free Mahi Mahi had all of the flavors of a seaside eatery, while the Smoked Brisket brought an earthy familiarity to the palate. The friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere topped off an enjoyable visit. This gastropub is a shining example of the Fort Wayne foodie and craft beer scene.

Asian Fusion Delight

Our search for Asian cuisine landed us at Nawa, in the heart of Fort Wayne. This upscale eatery specializes in contemporary cuisine with bold flavors and beautiful presentation. Their menu features dishes inspired by Thai, Japanese, and Korean flavors. We started our meal with an array of appetizers. The Satay Chicken paired perfectly with their classic peanut sauce. Our Fried Gyoza and Crab Rangoon reminded us of some of our favorite Asian restaurants in Kansas City. We saved room for Hawaiian Fried Rice, served with a beautiful plate presentation. The ambiance at Nawa is sleek and modern, making it an excellent spot for Fort Wayne date night. This restaurant is a must for anyone craving inspired Asian cuisine.

No Fort Wayne foodie adventure is complete without indulging in something sweet. At DeBrand Fine Chocolates, we picked out some gourmet truffles and decadent chocolate treats. We knew these would make the perfect gifts for some of our chocolate-loving friends. We stopped by Puffer Belly Junction to satisfy our sweet tooth with velvety ice cream. One of the reasons we enjoy museum visits is the opportunity to learn interesting backstories. We never knew that Ransom Eli Olds began his engine-building career in the late 19th century. Back then he was crafting powertrains that would eventually revolutionize transportation. Olds Motor Works was founded in 1897. It first focused on producing stationary engines before transitioning to horseless carriages. These humble beginnings set the stage for one of America’s most iconic automotive brands.

A visit to Fort Michilimackinac, during the fall, offers a unique blend of history and stunning autumn scenery. This historic 18th-century fort, in Mackinaw City, Michigan, sits at the top of the Lower Peninsula. Many come to this city as a jumping-off point for visiting Mackinaw Island but don’t overlook a stop at this historic site. It’s a must-see destination for history buffs and nature lovers alike. Surrounded by the vibrant hues of fall foliage, the fort’s rich past comes alive against a backdrop of seasonal beauty.

Colonial Fort Michilimackinac

Fort Michilimackinac held significant historical importance as a strategic military and trading post during the 18th century. Serving as a link between the Great Lakes and the broader fur trade network, it was a pivotal location for both European settlers and indigenous communities. The fort’s history reflects the cultural exchanges, alliances, and conflicts that shaped the region. We found it a valuable window into the complexities of colonial and indigenous relationships.

Color Us There

After a short historical introduction at the welcome center, we headed toward the fort. With Lake Michigan as the backdrop, we took in the vibrant colors that permeate the region. Living history sites add an extra layer to our visits with the addition of costumed interpreters. Before entering the 18th-century fort, we paused for a conversation with a British foot gunner. He gave us a quick overview of the fort’s layout, as well as some details of his role in the British army. We also learned that they perform daily cannon-firing demonstrations.

Views From Above

Fort Michilimackinac was originally constructed by the French in 1715. It served as a trading post, as well as a staging point for incursions against the growing threat from the British. Over the next 40 years, there were expansions to the fort’s footprint. Following the 1759 fall of Quebec, French forces ceded the fort to British occupation. Major improvements took place in the years leading to the Revolutionary War.

Digging Up History

Excavations at Mackinac State Historic Parks have been ongoing since 1959. Archeologists have uncovered fascinating artifacts, which provide insight into the fort’s history. Michigan State University archeologists have uncovered tools, ceramics, and personal items. These paint a picture of daily life during the 18th century. This ongoing work has helped staff recreate Fort Michilimackinac as it was in 1775. It would remain in use until the new fort was built on Mackinaw Island in 1780.

Its large windows allowed natural light to flood in, offering a glimpse of downtown life while we enjoyed our meal.

Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by L Street Kitchen’s cozy, welcoming vibe. The space balanced modern touches with a homey feel, creating a setting that encouraged us to linger. The Chicken & Biscuit was pure comfort food. Imagine tender chicken smothered in rich, savory gravy and served over a flaky, buttery biscuit. Each bite was a delight and highlighted the kitchen’s dedication to using quality ingredients. It kicked off our dining in South Bend and kept us full for hours!

Funny Name - Great Flavors

Our visit to Evil Czech Brewery felt like stepping into a playground for foodies and beer enthusiasts. The brewery’s fun-focused vibe is evident from the moment we arrived. This place is perfect for a casual evening or a weekend hangout. The vibe invites you to kick back and enjoy. Our October visit included quirky décor and upbeat music, making it clear this spot is all about good times and great flavors. Their outdoor patio offers a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of seating and would be great on a summer evening.

A Shared Meal

For our meal, we started with the Rip-N-Dip, a crowd favorite that lived up to the hype. The gooey cheese-filled bread, served with marinara sauce, was a perfect way to kick off our dining experience. For the main course, we couldn’t resist The 547 Burger. This double-patty masterpiece was topped with bacon, cheese, and their signature sauce. The combination of flavors was indulgent and satisfying. We could see why it’s a menu highlight. Paired with one of their craft brews, it was a meal that showcased Evil Czech’s dedication to bold, unforgettable dishes.

Miles of Memories

Studebaker trucks hold a special place in American history—and an even deeper place in my own. My grandfather owned a classic Studebaker pickup, a sturdy workhorse he used for work and play. I remember bouncing along country roads with the smell of old leather and engine oil. The dashboard had a rugged charm, with metal dials and switches that were solid and timeless. Studebaker trucks were known for their reliability, and my grandfather’s was no exception. It was a vehicle built to last, crafted with care, and a reminder of an era when a truck was more than just transportation—it was a trusted partner.

The admission for adults is $11, which is a bargain for three floors of exhibits. Students are $7 and kids 5 and under are free. Our visit to the Studebaker Museum turned into an unforgettable experience. We were captivated by the rich history and classic beauty of each exhibit. It felt like we were transported through time. Each car tells a story, and the museum’s beautifully curated exhibits made the experience all the more immersive. It provided a new appreciation for the brand and its impact on American history. For us, it was more than just a collection of cars—it was a journey through innovation, design, and nostalgia.

Hjemkomst Center – Dual City Fun

During our time in Fargo, North Dakota, we learned that their metropolitan area includes Moorhead, Minnesota. The concept of dual cities was not new to us. We live in a city that sprawls across the state line between Kansas and Missouri. While much of our visit was spent on the western side of the state line, we did cross over to visit the Hjemkomst Center. This cultural history museum focuses on the region’s Norwegian influence. Our knowledge on this subject is limited, so we found this a great way to gain some understanding.

Under Wraps

Approaching the Hjemkomst Center we spotted the oversized tent-like structure. The necessity for this cover became apparent when we went inside. We were surprised to see a full-size replica of the Gokstad Viking ship. The original was discovered in Norway back in 1880. A hundred years later, this replica was sailed from Duluth, Minnesota to Oslo, Norway. One year later it would return to the United States.

Hjemkomst Center Exhibits

While the Viking ship is one of the Hjemkomst Center’s main attractions, it also exhibits regional history. We made our way through some displays picking up tidbits of useful knowledge. While not a first for us, we are always amazed when we are reminded how many settlers traveled with a pull cart.

Indigenous Discord

When we came to the exhibit that focuses on Indigenous people, it caused us to pause. My research on the treatment of native tribes in Canada uncovered a different approach than in the United States. Our northern neighbors used a working relationship approach that yielded positive results. In the U.S., the seek-and-destroy method attempted to exterminate the people who were here long before Europeans arrived.

Hopperstad Stave Church

The Hjemkomst Center held another surprise for us. We joined a tour preparing to head out to the back of the museum. As we followed the group, a beautiful wooden structure came into view. This is a replica of a Norwegian stave church. Constructed of pine, cedar, and redwood, it makes quite a first impression.

It's All In The Details

After hearing details about the construction of the church, we headed inside. The unusual door reminded me of something that Tolkien would have imagined. Once inside, we hadn’t expected to find a cavernous space. As the lesson continued, I was drawn to the sheer rugged beauty of the structure. It took a few minutes before I was able to focus on finer details.

Facing the Past

The Hopperstad Stave Church has plenty of small details that beg to be examined. Each discovery added to our curiosity about this building. Intricate carvings line posts, while paintings cover the inside of the sanctuary ceiling. We could have spent more time searching for discoveries, but the tour was wrapping up.

Visiting the Hjemkomst Center

Back outside, we walked around the church, looking at the various angles and shadows. It is certainly a remarkable structure and one worth the visit. Admission to the Hjemkomst Center is $12 for adults and $8 for kids. The museum hosts various traveling exhibits throughout the year, so each visit would be unique. As we made our way back to the car, I kept wondering what it would be like to sail across the Atlantic Ocean in that Viking ship.

Wurst Bier Hall – Going German In Fargo

Traveling across North America has provided plenty of variety to our diets. When I’m planning a multiple city road trip, I attempt to add as many cuisines as possible. During a northern excursion, we stopped by Wurst Bier Hall for lunch. It provided an opportunity for going German in Fargo, North Dakota. This is a food group that we haven’t experienced as often, so we were excited to explore their menu.

Easy To Spot

Our initial plan was to visit their downtown location. As we have seen over the past few years, plans must be fluid. When we discovered that Fargo is home to a retro 1950s-style diner, we chose to move Wurst Bier Hall to a lunch visit. Their second location, in West Fargo, fits our plans better. When we finally arrived, we had no problem spotting the restaurant. The bright red awning and “jackalope” logo certainly catch the eye.

The Wurst Bier Hall Experience

Stepping through the door, we found ourselves in a contemporary industrial beer hall. The décor leaves no doubt that this place has a large selection of beers. Our server pointed out that they have 36 local, regional and seasonal beers and wines on tap. The seating is a mix of high-tops and large benches. It definitely had us feeling like we were going German in Fargo.

Finger Food Heaven

The menu features gourmet sausages and other classic European dishes. An assortment of appetizers caught my attention. My first choice was their poutine, but I knew Winnipeg, Manitoba was our next city on this road trip. Crystal suggested we sample the Bavarian Pretzels, which are served with cheese dip or marshmallow fluff. We decided to stick with the traditional cheese version, but I was left wondering what they would be like with a sweet topping. Once we began eating them, I was glad about this choice. The pretzels were so delicious, that I shudder to think of ruining them with a sweet dip. If you’ve tried the fluff, drop us a comment about the experience.

Best of the Wurst Bier Hall

Now it was time to move on to the main event. Wurst Bier Hall offers a collection of classic, gourmet, and exotic sausages. We discussed the idea of sampling boar or rabbit but chose to stick with conventional versions. To gauge their food, we needed something comparable to those we’ve tried in the past. We picked the Bratwurst and Polish Kielbasa sausages. For sides, we picked Spätzle Mac & Cheese and a serving of French Fries. We set about eating and enjoying the flavors of both versions of sausage.

Going German in Fargo

Wurst Bier Hall ended up being a stop we are glad we found. It reminded us how much we enjoy German cuisine. While our time in Fargo was limited to a One Day Stay, we were making the most of each hour. It was obvious that we’d have to plan future visits to North Dakota. Perhaps one of them will bring us back to this area, so we can sample one of their exotic sausages.

Kroll’s Diner – Retro Dining Vibe

We may not have lived through the 1950s, but the nostalgia of that era has become woven in our country’s fabric. Television shows, like Happy Days, helped form our view of the “Glory Days” from the end of WWII. Our first evening in Fargo, we discovered this time capsule of Americana. Kroll’s Diner is a reminder of those simpler days. Let’s take a walk back in time to experience their retro dining vibe.

Signs of Days Gone By

It’s easy to pick Kroll’s Diner out of the crowd of restaurants. The gleaming metal exterior immediately screamed mid-20th Century. The signage, adorned with a neon-lit clock, looked like it came straight out of a movie set. We’ve dined in similar places, but this one is a notch above. Being summertime, it was still too early in the evening for the rest of the lights, but we can imagine it beckoning travelers on a dark night. It’s time to step inside and see what we find.

Step Back in Time

When we entered our imaginations came to life. The interior is as bright and shiny, as we had hoped. Neon lights highlighted the seating area, while the checkered floor guided us forward. We grabbed a booth and soaked up the retro dining vibe. Our server arrived and walked us through the menu. We were hoping for an old-style burger joint and that’s exactly what we found. To our surprise, they’ve mixed in a variety of German cuisine dishes, but we were on a mission to explore their American side.

Americana Foodie

When our decisions were finally made, our server returned to take our orders. I stuck with a tried-and-true Cheeseburger and Fries. To no surprise, Crystal ordered the Grilled Chicken with Onion Rings. We decided to include one of their frosty Strawberry Shakes to our order. Now we only had to watch and wait as our order was completed. During this time, I jumped up to snap some photos of the place.

Relive the Past

Our server knew the drill, and brought our shake over before our food arrived. This gave us a few minutes to practice our cutesy poses. We discovered that when you order one shake, it’s large enough to fill two glasses, so we each ended up with one. Our food soon arrived, and we spent the rest of the time discussing how clean and shiny everything was. It was about as close to time traveling as we have come. Old Cowtown – A Step Back In Time

Being Midwesterners, we were looking forward to our visit to Old Cowtown. Wichita has a lot of similarities to our hometown of Kansas City. Both cities were frontier towns, that grew famous for their cattle trade. They also have the confluence of two rivers in the heart of their city. It was near this junction that a replica of an 1860s frontier town came to be. Since living history sites are a favorite of both of us, this place was destined to become one of our favorite stops.

We want to thank Visit Wichita and Old Cowtown for their hospitality. Rest assured that all opinions are our own.

Getting a Lay of the Land

Old Cowtown is home to 54 unique buildings. Half of these are original and have been relocated to this site to preserve them. Visitors have an opportunity to walk the streets of a town stuck in the era of the Civil War. Getting a chance to immerse ourselves in a replica town from that era sounded very educational. This museum has an array of costumed interpreters who are happy to interact with guests. Just be sure to keep a close watch on any flim-flam artists that may invite you to an entertaining game of chance.

Exploring Old Cowtown

In the Business area, each building represented a certain type of shop that would be found in a frontier city. Inside we found examples of the products, tools, and devices that were commonly used. Informational cards and placards noted interesting facts about years gone by. Some of the shops we visited were occupied by the shopkeepers. Whether it was the delicate work of creating a new hat or the hot job of a blacksmith, each worker was diligent in recreating accurate period pieces.

Belly Up To The Bar

We decided to whet our whistles with a stop at the local saloon. Inside we found a barkeeper who serves up refreshments to guests. There was still a chill in the air, so we ordered some coffee and sat down to enjoy a show. Before long, others had joined us and it signaled time for the dancehall girls to make their appearance. We enjoyed the revelry and the show ended with a roaring round of applause.

Themed Weekend

Our visit was timed to allow us to partake in the annual Civil War event. This takes place one weekend in April and offers a unique look into the past. Throughout the park, we found soldiers in various activities. This gives visitors a chance to see the different parts of daily life during the 1860s. While they are also open for conversations, it is important to remember that they have specific duties that must be performed in a timely fashion.

Leading to Lincoln

Around midday, we heard the sound of drums heading toward the middle of town. Soon we found a regiment of soldiers marching toward the main area, which included the saloon and hotel. Other soldiers were assembling, as well as the townsfolk, so we knew something big was about to take place. Sure enough, before long a reenactor dressed as Abraham Lincoln stepped out on the hotel balcony. He proceeded to deliver an uplifting speech that inspired that assembly.

Weary Soldiers

Afterwards, the assembly dispersed and we returned to exploring the town. We worked our way toward the back of Old Cowtown. This is where you will find a farmstead much like what was seen in rural Kansas. Along the way, we spotted a variety of soldiers engaged in leisure activities. It appears that the majority of their duties had been fulfilled and now they had time to visit. This provided some nice photo opportunities.

Wrapping Up The Day

After exploring the farm site, we decided that the rest of Wichita was calling our name. As we began our walk back toward the entrance, I paused to take one look back at the park. This allowed me a chance to capture this image of a mother and daughter scurrying back to their home. It was a fitting wrap on a fun experience.

Visit Old Cowtown

Old Cowtown Museum is nestled on 23 acres in Wichita’s River District. General admission is $10.00 per person with kids getting in for $8.00. They are open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. We suggest setting aside a minimum of 1.5 hours to see all of the exhibits, but you may want to extend that for special events. Nearby you can also visit the Mid-America All-Indian Museum, Wichita Art Museum, and Exploration Place. All of these fun activities in one area make Wichita a great place to explore.

America’s Love Affair With Racing – Museum Of American Speed

America’s love affair with racing likely began when the second car was assembled. Can you imagine being the first person to own an automobile? We picture the first drivers traversing the landscape, wondering how their driving skills stacked up to others. When we discovered that Lincoln, Nebraska is home to the Museum of American Speed, we knew a visit was in the cards. With 150,000 square feet of displays, we knew that we were going to be here for a while. Unbeknownst to us, this place goes far beyond displaying a bunch of fast cars.

Autos Hit the Road

In 1886, Carl Benz debuted his Benz Patent-Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the birth of the car. Not surprisingly, one of the first arranged races took place the next year. These early gasoline-powered vehicles were much slower than today’s, but people also faced unpaved road courses. I can almost imagine the bumpy rides they faced, as they flew down the course at speeds of up to 10 mph. In 1896, the first gas vehicle sped down the streets of Detroit at 20 miles per hour, dodging people and wagons. Before long, many others would join the field of automobile manufacturing, and cars would be found all across the country. As vehicle technology improved, vehicles were built for the purposes of consumer usage and racing. A brand’s ability to win major races would help sell its cars to the American public.

The Early Days of Racing

While European racing was performed on closed road courses, in America the preference was large oval tracks. These were designed to make viewing easier for spectators, propelling the sport’s popularity. Taking a page from bicycle and motorcycle racing, some tracks were constructed with wooden floors. This provided a smooth, fast surface. As America’s love affair with racing grew, a variety of racing styles appeared. Each category had its own specific rules and vehicle specifications. As soon as new rules were developed, you can bet that racing teams pushed the limits. As we toured the museum, it was intriguing to see how simple the motors of these early machines look in comparison to today.

Hot Rodding

While big-name teams were dropping huge amounts of money into track racing, Americans were looking for less expensive ways to get involved. After World War II, veterans found sport in racing down decommissioned aircraft landing strips. These long straightaways were perfect for short races and would become known as Drag Racing. The rules were simple; be the first to cross the finish line. While the distances would vary, 1/4 mile became a common length for many drag races. For those wanting to learn more about the early players in this sport, there is tons of information available. We didn’t have time to read it all, so you’ll want to block off at least a half day to explore this museum.

Drag Racing Icons

While veterans careened down airstrips, teenagers were racing on rural roads. America’s youth loved their cars and looked for ways to display their mechanical prowess. “Souped-up” autos would vie for bragging rights in mad-dash competitions. Once again, the 1/4-mile was a popular distance, as it was often the unit of measure for a rural block. It’s crazy to think that many of these hot rods could reach nearly 100 mph in that short distance. By the 1950s, drag strips were being built to provide a safe space for spectators to observe these matchups. It’s safe to say that America’s love affair with racing was growing at a record pace. The feeling of the wind on your face and the thrill of speed was becoming addictive.

Cars Permeate American Life

After automobiles first came on the scene, it wouldn’t take long for this new form of transportation to permeate American life. Pedal cars began appearing in the 1890s and were fashioned after actual vehicles seen on the roads. The expense of these models limited their usage to primarily wealthy families. The Great Depression only made them more out of reach for the average family. After WWII, the costs had balanced out with the growing family incomes. A resurgence of popularity blossomed and soon a myriad of styles flooded the market. I remember getting a pedal car for a birthday and falling head over heels in love with my “car”. If you have fond memories of these childhood toys, you will love visiting this museum.

Childhood Memories

As I grew older, the move was made from toys to models. I can still remember the hours spent piecing together these intricate copies. The Red Baron was always one of my most cherished funny cars and little did I know that there was an actual full-size version. You can imagine my delight when this bad boy popped into view. Sure enough, sitting right next to it is the Boothill Express, which was another favorite of mine. I’m not sure what Crystal thought about all of these funny cars, but I know that she loves the torque of a fast motor as much as I do.

Racing Royalty

As we continued through the museum, we were impressed with the sheer volume of vehicles that they have assembled. Whether you are a fan of Open Wheel, Indy, Model T, or Land Speed vehicles, you’ll find plenty of each. Each gallery holds something new and before long our heads were reeling. We never realized how many variations could be made from the Flathead Ford engine. The museum staff has included cutaway versions to help educate visitors on the intricacies of each design. It was easy to follow the progression of power as we moved forward in time.

Museum Memorial

The Museum of American Speed is a family endeavor. Begun by Bill and Joyce Smith, their four sons were happy to be involved. The racing bug bit Bill at a young age and he would end up a formidable opponent for other racers. During his life, he would steer sprint, AIS Indy, Pikes Peak, and Bonneville autos to victory. The family’s collections took decades to assemble and they proudly share them with the public. When they lost their son Clay, a memorial was designed with his collection of around 600 lunch boxes. Moving through the 3 floors of galleries, we quickly realized that this family is serious about collecting. In fact, during our visit, they were in the midst of constructing a new exhibit space. When completed, it will double their current space.

America’s Love Affair with Racing

Our visit was in the 3-hour range and we could have easily doubled it. The Museum of American Speed is a labor of love from a family with deep roots in the racing world. We spent much of our time imagining the thrill of tooling down a racetrack in one of the countless vehicles. To say that this is one of the most extensive collections we have seen would be an understatement. This place has to be seen to be truly appreciated. It is clear that America’s love affair with racing is alive and kicking as much today as at any time in history.

Visiting Wisconsin Dells Without Getting Wet

Wisconsin Dells has earned the unofficial title of ‘Waterpark Capital of the World’. Making our first pass through town, it quickly became apparent where this name came from. We discovered that there are currently 20 waterparks spread around the area. That makes this northern destination a major draw for family vacations. Wet and wild fun is certainly appealing, but we wanted to find out what it’s like visiting Wisconsin Dells without getting wet. Let’s dive into the variety of dry options available for all ages’ entertainment.

What’s in a Name?

We have heard about this area for years. While visiting Wisconsin Dells had been on our radar for quite some time, we didn’t know where it got its name. It turns out it is based on geological formations in the sandstone. This all occurred around 15,000 years ago, during the last Ice Age. To get a better look at these protected features, we hopped on the Dells Boat Tour. There are two tours to choose from; upper or lower. We selected the Upper Dells, which has two stops. After a breathtaking hike through Witches Gulch, it was back to the boat for stop #2. A short ride and we found ourselves at Stand Rock. This location is notable for being captured by early photographer H. H. Bennett. In place of his son bounding between the pillars, we watched a dog make the leap.

A Different View

Seeing the layered columns made us yearn for more. Back on dry land, we planned out another Dells excursion. After our first tour, we thought Dell’s formations were limited to the area alongside the Wisconsin River. It would take a visit to Lost Canyon Tours to discover that these fascinating features cover around 5 miles of land along and nearby the river. On our way to this horse-drawn excursion, we passed by more of the waterparks. Summer was in full bloom and we noticed tons of family fun taking place. We found our destination and soon we were off on our relaxing excursion. As our steeds pulled us along, we found ourselves in deep conversation with our guide. Riding through these slot canyons made for an incredible experience.

Hands-on Fun

Now that we understood where this region got its name, we were ready for some more exploring. Knowing that this is a family destination, we wanted to see what they had to offer the younger visitors. Waterparks are a big draw, but we were visiting Wisconsin Dells without getting wet. What could be better than a hands-on science museum? The Tommy Bartlett Exploratory offers visitors a chance to explore the mysteries of science and space. They state that they are home to over 175 exhibits, but instead of counting we spent our time learning. It’s funny how quickly we revert to childhood mode when faced with a chance to play.

Exploring New Worlds

Now that we were in hands-on mode, we didn’t want the fun to end. No problem, because they have Wizard Quest. This all-ages immersive experience was something new for us. The 30,000-square feet labyrinth of hidden mysteries is designed to appeal to the entire family. The creators of this attraction have perfected the art of transporting visitors to a magical world. With tons of quests to complete, you can make multiple visits without running out of new things to accomplish. We were so impressed that we spent our time just exploring all of the nooks and crannies while discovering hidden doors and chambers.

Burger Time

Exploring can burn a lot of energy, so we always make sure to include some interesting foodie stops. Once again, we focus on family-friendly sites that can make a good day great. While enjoying our morning coffee at Bella Goose Coffee, a local clued us in on a nearby burger joint. B-Lux Grill is a family-run business that features hearty bites and fun shakes. While I was all in on a delicious beefy Cheesehead Burger, Crystal decided to sample their Fish & Chips. To sweeten the pot, we included one of their famous shakes. Ours was The Mojo Jojo, which is packed with tons of peanut flavor.

Fun Foods

Driving around town, we realized that the hits kept coming when it comes to interesting dining options. At Grateful Shed, another local recommended stop, we enjoyed ordering lunch from a series of food trucks. While this may not seem that unusual, this was a collection of trucks all housed inside a permanent structure. It’s a sight-and-taste experience. What would a visit to Wisconsin be without some cheese? MACS (Macaroni And Cheese Shop) offers a variety of macs, melts, salads, and desserts. We opted for the Chicken Bacon Ranch Mac, which was packed with cheesy goodness. Good thing there are plenty of calorie-burning activities around town.

Evening Enjoyment

Like many vacation destinations, there are myriad other family activities. For us, miniature golf is our go-to evening entertainment. There is an assortment of options, but our schedule only allowed time for a couple of rounds. Perhaps if we had focused on playing the game, instead of playing around, we might have made it to one or two others. For those of you who have been following our adventures for a while, you won’t be surprised that we found ice cream. This creamy treat is our favorite dessert option and we love sampling all types. Once again, more calorie burning was required.

Motor Lodging

Choosing a lodging option is fairly easy around this region. There are resorts, chain hotels, and old-school motor lodges. We opted for the last category and found one that is locally owned and operated. The Black Hawk Motel is within walking distance of the historic downtown area. With an itinerary packed with excursions, we don’t spend much time at our lodging. I did take some time to wander around and check out all of the amenities. It looks like a family can find plenty to keep everyone occupied during downtime from exploring.

Winter Home

During our time visiting Wisconsin Dells, we discovered that not all of the family-friendly attractions are in the city limits. Just a few miles south of the city we found Baraboo, Wisconsin. We had never heard this name before, but would soon have a reason to retain its memories for a lifetime. This upper Midwest town is home to Circus World. This is the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus and operates during warm weather. While the circus isn’t as prominent in today’s entertainment schedule, here you can relive the glory days of the circus. Not only is it filled with a dizzying amount of artifacts, but you can also watch a live circus.

Visiting Wisconsin Dells

When we set off to discover the possibility of visiting Wisconsin Dells without getting wet, we had no idea just how much we would find. With just a couple of days allotted for exploring, we packed a ton of fun into our time. Now that we know how much this place has to offer families, we can understand why it is a top Midwest vacation destination. Whether you are a waterpark fan or just want to connect with nature, you will find opportunities abound in Wisconsin Dells.

Smoky Hill Museum – The Crossroads Of The Heartland

We are going to let you in on a little secret. There is gold in the Smoky Hills. It’s not be nuggets of the shiny substance that has been the reason for mass migrations. The precious treasure we are talking about is found in the local attractions found in a variety of towns and cities. The fertile rolling hills have attracted visitors for thousands of years. Many came to make a home, while others were merely passing through the Crossroads of the Heartland. With all of this activity, we were glad to see that the Smoky Hill Museum has recorded some of these excursions. This FREE Salina, Kansas museum is a great place to gain some new perspectives.

Early Explorers

The search for gold in the Smoky Hills has been going on for over 1500 years. Way back in 1541, Francisco de Coronado first laid eyes on the Smoky Hill River. His quest was to discover the fabled city of ‘Quivira’. While he failed to find gold, he did happen upon the thatched villages of the Wichita tribe. In a letter to the King of Spain, he suggested these lands were the best he had seen for producing all of the products of Spain. Many of the native nuts and fruits were similar to those from his native lands. Subsequent explorations would be made by famous explorers like John Fremont and Zebulon Pike.

Life on the Plains

The Smoky Hill Museum is compact but filled with treasures. They have designed the spaces to be interactive and educational. This family-friendly attraction allows visitors to pass through time as they learn the direct connection between the land and the people who reside there. A model of a one-room pioneer house reminded us of the value of modern conveniences. Can you imagine what life was like facing the changing seasons in Kansas?

Kid Friendly

Like most museums, Smoky Hill has rotating exhibits. Let’s Play is one that will run through November 26, 2022. We enjoy seeing these types of displays, as it makes each visit a little different. This particular exhibit focused on toys and the kids who played with them. We felt that this approach brought a personal touch that helps visitors connect with the story. Stepping into the timeline, we found ourselves transported back to the late 1890s. It is interesting to see how some of those early games, like Tic-Tac-Toe, are still played around the world.

Getting Local

Back in the pre-television days, people got their entertainment from the radio. We’ve all seen the movies or shows that have families sitting around listening to their favorite programs. The Smoky Hill Museum explains the usage of radio in terms that are easy to understand. That is a big deal when you are visiting with a group that has a wide age range. Seeing other museum visitors confirmed the importance of this approach.

True Life

Taking a deeper dive into the exhibit, we found ourselves intrigued by the life and times of Dick & Devere. These junior sleuths became embroiled in a wide range of adventures. While the names are fictitious, they were based on real children from Salina. On top of these rascals escapades, visitors can also listen to excerpts from popular radio shows of the 30s and 40s. Having grown up in the television era, it was intriguing to hear how descriptive the programs were, as they played out the exciting exploits.

Smoky Hill Museum

These little nuggets of fun make our travels more interesting. Each stop offers some stories that help us connect with the locals. Learning about life in the Crossroads of the Heartland reminded us why we love our home state. We are planning to make more visits to this region in the future. Honest Abe’s Burgers – Food With Attitude

We have sampled a variety of burger joints across North America and determined there are only two categories. The first is the old-school type that serves up simple sandwiches that we’ve all come to expect for decades. The second is a newer group that adds unique twists to their handhelds. Honest Abe’s Burgers, in Lincoln, is definitely part of the second category. They bring unusual, and even borderline insane, flavor combinations to their menu. This Nebraska chain only exists in the capital city, for now, but we can see their popularity taking them to new cities in the future.

Cut to the Point

When I was researching Lincoln eateries, this one popped up more than once. Seeing a burger joint getting rave reviews intrigued me. After a little deeper dive, it was decided that Honest Abe’s Burgers needed to be added to our list. After all, it checked all of the boxes that we look for in a meal stop. Their downtown location is near the Nebraska History Museum, so it was easy to fit it into our schedule. After a busy morning at the farmers market and museum, our appetites were revved up and ready to be satisfied.

Bird’s Eye View

Stepping through the front door, we were greeted by a slew of Abe images. This happens to be my all-time favorite president, so I have to admit to being overjoyed. Crystal could see the glee in me but tempered it with a reminder that we needed to eat something. After spending considerable time exploring the menu online, it was time to put our research to work. I had tried to imagine how some of the interesting flavor combinations would taste. As Abe would say, “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Time to get to work and decide which burgers we would order.

Honest Abe’s Burgers

Since we were in a category two burger joint, we wanted to sample something unique. Our first choice was the 1809. To make this sammie, they load up a traditional burger patty on a bed of pickled apples. Then they top this with loads of bacon, melted gouda cheese, and smoky honey mayo. Served with a heaping mound of Herb Seasoned Freedom Fries, this meal demanded recognition. Biting into this Honest Abe’s Burger brought a mouthful of zest and smoky goodness into play. Crystal and I have an unwritten agreement to share our plates so that we can each sample the flavors. There are times I finish my half and have become addicted to the flavor combination. This was one of those times.

Food with Attitude

For our second choice, we decided to step even farther down the zany flavor path. A burger with a name like Hammer of Thor certainly captures your attention. Read the ingredients and tell us if you’d try it. Start with another one of their delectable beef burger patties. Top it with griddled Brussel Sprouts, chipotle cream cheese, pepper jack cheese, and bacon mayo. It was far from normal and had just enough crazy to make it to our table. A side of some Freedom Tots added a potato variation. After wrapping up my half of the 1809, it was time to test this eccentric combination. The layers of flavors quickly ended my time of mourning, as this burger brings the whole house full of tastes. Well played, Abe.

The Good Life

We’ll be the first to admit that we haven’t spent enough time exploring Nebraska. This was our first time in Lincoln and we were finding it to be a flavorful experience. Honest Abe’s Burgers was a good example of the interesting approach that many of the local restaurants have taken with their menus. With a plethora of dining choices scattered around downtown, we knew that it would take multiple visits to sample even the tip of the iceberg. Fortunately, we were finding that our pre-visit picks were spot-on for great tastes. All of our research was making this another successful excursion. As Old Abe said, “Prepare for the chance that could come someday.”

Couples Time In St. Charles

While many of our excursions are designed to showcase family-friendly travel destinations, sometimes we look for a different type of getaway. While searching for something unique, we discovered a place that would make a perfect escape for the two of us. Since we both enjoy many of the same things, we decided to spend some couples time in St. Charles, Illinois. Our research had uncovered a plethora of possibilities and we couldn’t wait to visit. It didn’t take long for us to fall in love with this upscale escape.

Chill Time

Intending to have the best experience possible, we made sure that there was plenty of time allotted for slowing down. This is easy to do, as the vibe of the city is relaxed. The downtown is laid out in a pattern that makes it very walkable. This is perfect for enhancing couple time in St. Charles. After parking our car, we headed to Mt. St. Mary Park, where we strolled through the public art. Situated along the shore of the Fox River, which bisects the downtown, the park offers some beautiful views. There is even a pedestrian bridge that aids in traversing both sides of the river.

Retail Therapy

It’s no secret that we love shopping. We even give bonus points for locally-owned boutique stores. There is plenty to keep a couple occupied between meals. Crystal was enjoying all of the cute clothes she found at the stores. I was happy to see her having so much fun. With so many choices, we had no problem finding some Christmas gifts for family and friends. It’s easy to imagine St. Charles being a good destination for a girlfriend’s weekend. Between salons, shops, and restaurants, this city has something for everyone.

Scary Treat

Some of you guys may be thinking that all of these boutiques aren’t your cup of tea. Don’t worry, they have some unique shops that appeal to us, as well. While strolling along Main Street, we happened upon Ghoulish Mortals. This macabre store is filled with frighteningly fascinating merchandise. As we perused their stock, we found memorabilia from just about every horror movie we have ever heard of or seen. It was the perfect stop to grab some unusual pieces for Halloween and gift giving.

Artistic Outing

Our couples time in St. Charles happened to overlap with their annual Fine Arts Festival. This is just one of many annual events that take place along the Fox River. It was nice to just stroll through the booths and check out the variety of pieces on display. Whether you are an art lover or just into people-watching, these types of events are a perfect fit. We’ve gotten into the habit of picking up small mementos from our journeys and locally made art is one of our favorite choices. Not looking to add to your collection? The art festival even has a section where visitors can take a turn showcasing their artistic talent. Crystal jumped in and added a special touch from us.

Floating the Fox River

The Fox River has a powerful presence in St. Charles. The peaceful water flow downstream bisects the city. At nearby Pottawatomie Park, travelers can mingle with locals as they explore the banks of the river. As we explored the park, we saw groups of people enjoying picnics and parties. The local miniature golf course was packed with participants enjoying the great outdoors. Spotting a paddlewheel riverboat sparked the idea to take a sightseeing cruise. This has been a favorite activity of visitors since the mid-1940s. While the boats have been replaced over the years, the relaxed pleasure of a riverboat cruise is still entertaining.

Hidden Delight

Even on vacation, we still try to stick to our regular dating schedule. After over 40 years, this has helped us keep the spark alive in our relationship. Not all dates are at the same level, as some are extra special. Our visit to Club Arcada certainly attained “extra special” status. This historic theater is still in operation but now has an added feature. After taking the elevator to the 3rd floor, we were snuck into their speakeasy. Talk about a fun way to make dinner extraordinary. We felt like we were stepping back into the Roaring Twenties, complete with all of the Hollywood star power from those days.

Couples Time in St. Charles

When we tell people that we are travel bloggers, we often hear the reply “Where can I get that job?” While the reality is that there is a lot of behind-the-scenes work and expense, it is still an amazing job. It is hard to label it a job, because we are always enjoying ourselves. Our couples time in St. Charles was another chance to meet new people and learn about a new destination. Immersing ourselves in the local scene helps us connect with the roots of the city and feel like we have had a cultural experience. St. Charles is an amazing destination choice for a couple’s escape, family vacation, or girlfriend’s outing. We’d love to hear some of your stories from visits to this “Gem on the Fox River”.

Seelye Mansion – A Living Time Capsule

Who’s up for a little time traveling? A visit to Abilene, Kansas can take you back to the early 1900s just by touring the Seelye Mansion. This turn-of-the-century home has 25 rooms and more than a few fascinating features. One fact that surprised us was that the furnishings cost more than the home, which was built in 1905. In 2022, it’s unusual to find a place that still has the original appliances and electrical components. As we toured this massive house, we felt like we were in a living time capsule.

Family Life

Dr. Alfred Seelye made his fortunes through patent medicine. This was during the days of the “snake oil” salesman when cure-alls were commonplace. Seeyle attempted to bring a business angle to the business by focusing on production, marketing, and distribution. In 1890, Alfred moved from Illinois to Abilene, where he set up his laboratory. Within a few years, he had at least 100 products on the market. With ever-increasing success, his company grew to have over 300 employees. To boost sales, he offered a free “health guide”, which contained, recipes, weather predictions, and plenty of ads for his various products. In 1893, Alfred married Jeanette Taylor and the couple would raise two daughters, Helen Ruth and Mary Eleanor.

It’s All In the Details

With money being no concern, he spared no expense when it was time to build the family home. The 11,000-square-foot structure contains 25 rooms. It is filled with Edison light fixtures, a ballroom, a music room, and a Tiffany-designed fireplace. How would you choose to furnish such a grand structure? Albert purchased the majority of the pieces at the 1904 World’s Fair, in St. Louis. By the time it was completely decorated, the family had spent more on the accessories than on the house. Abilene is also home to Dwight Eisenhower, who lived on the “wrong side of the tracks” that run through the middle of the city. As a youth, Dwight delivered ice to the home, but the daughters still saw him as lower on the social ladder.

Travel Back Over 100 Years

All of the special touches were already in place by the time the family moved into their new home. How amazing that must have been to the daughters. We can imagine the joy of exploring a fully furnished home on such an immense scale. Throughout the home, we found reminders of the family that has been kept by the current owner. In the 1920s, Frank Lloyd Wright helped with a few interior renovations. After Dr. Seelye and his wife had passed, the daughters remained in the house. The current owner, Terry Tietjens, purchased the Seelye Mansion in 1981, which he shared with the sisters. He told us stories about how the home had fallen into disrepair and his desire to bring it back to its original condition. Along the way, he had to balance his desire with getting the sisters to buy into his vision.

Amazing Architecture

The work of returning the home to its previous glory was not easy. The sisters had slowly been selling off furniture and fixtures to cover costs. Terry had to run down these items and bring them back. After agreeing to purchase the home, a fire in the elevator shaft caused considerable damage. Even with this setback, he went through with the purchase. Living with the sisters wasn’t all tea and crumpets. Often he would have to convince them to all the renovations to take place. Even something as simple as television was looked upon suspiciously by the sisters. When they were all together in the home, he made fast friends with the ladies.

Hidden Secrets

After touring the upper floors, we didn’t see how there could be any additional surprises, but we were mistaken. A small spiral staircase is set in a corner and leads down to the basement. We assumed we’d find a storm/root cellar combination, which would have been used for storage and inclement weather. There was no way we would have expected to discover a bowling alley. The version found downstairs was constructed by the American Box Ball Co. from Indianapolis. It includes an automatic ball return, as well as a lever that resets the pins. We were told that the Seelye Mansion was basically built around this special feature.

We love exploring these hidden gems that dot the land. Abilene, Kansas has a solid reputation for being one of the best small towns for tourists. The Seelye Mansion is just one of many attractions to be found in this city that can trace its roots to the Wild West. It’s interesting to find a destination that has such a wide range of subjects, so everyone in the family will find something of interest. 7 Reasons To Visit Madison, Wisconsin

We enjoy visiting the Upper Midwest during the summertime. Cool nights and warm days are perfect for exploring new destinations. During a multiple-city trip, we included a couple of days in Wisconsin’s capital city. This gave us a chance to discover 7 reasons to visit Madison. A visit to the state capital building was number 1 on our list and we were not disappointed. With more than 100 years under its belt, the structure is in amazingly good shape. The dome rises to over 280 feet and is topped by the statue, Wisconsin. Made of white granite, from Vermont, it is the largest granite dome in the world. An impressive way to begin our visit to the 30th state in the Union.

2) University Life

We are slowly adding state capitals to our collection, as each has its own unique vibe. Madison is also home to the largest university in the state. Since the mid-1800s, the University of Wisconsin has brought Badger Pride to Madison. After settling in, we made our way over to the campus to see what was shaking. Summer classes were in session, so the attendance was far below the roughly 42,000 students who regularly attend. It was easy to spot the badger mascot, as we made our way to Alumni Park to enjoy the relaxed vibe. The warm sunshine enticed us to grab a seat along the lake and enjoy some people-watching. While our itinerary beckoned us to get back to exploring, we lingered in this scenic setting for a while longer.

3) Leisurely Vibe

The University of Wisconsin is situated on the shore of Lake Mendota. With summer in full blaze, we spotted lots of activity. Sailboats and kayaks floated among the waves. Sunbathing was definitely high on the list of leisure activities. As we enjoyed our time on the patio, we soaked up some of those rays for ourselves. Later we would learn about the many firsts that have taken place at the University of Wisconsin. Some notable firsts are: a magnetic observatory, developing standards for testing milk quality, an experimental breeding program, and the country’s first speech clinic.

4) Free Museums

Being a history lover, I enjoy adding museums to our itineraries. Capitals are usually home to the state museum, which offers a broader perspective than many of the local sites. This helps us get a better feel for how things have changed over the centuries. The idea that museums are FREE makes them all the more attractive. During our visit to the Wisconsin Historical Museum, we were surprised to see their openness about past issues in the state. While peddling political influence has been around for many generations, it has usually been done in secret. Their willingness to face past problems was one of the 7 reasons to visit Madison.

5) Honoring Our Heroes

Just a short walk from the history museum is the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Another FREE attraction, it also has a commanding view of the state capital. This museum showcases the participation of Wisconsin citizens during the past 150 years of wars. We were impressed at the high quality of exhibits found inside this place. So many of the artifacts and images evoke memories that we remember from our younger years. It is a solemn site that reflects on the sacrifices made by so many. The availability of free or low-cost attractions makes Madison an affordable vacation destination.

6) Cheese!

Let’s face it, Wisconsin’s know their cheese. There is a myriad of cheese shops around Madison, but our limited time only allowed us to visit one. Fortunately for us, Fromagination sits on the square that surrounds the capital. This made it an easy destination to visit during our day at the museums. Stepping through the door, our noses picked up the exquisite aromas of tart and tangy cheeses. Once inside, we found ourselves afloat in choices. The staff was more than happy to walk us through their wide variety of cheeses, as well as plenty of accompaniments. We found tons of locally created merchandise, perfect for gift giving. There were even a few specialties that will add some extra zest to our homemade charcuterie boards.

7) Affordable Eats

Travel wouldn’t be the same without the chance to sample some of the local cuisines. We love this part of our job and take the task seriously. Our itineraries are always jammed full of interesting eateries that allow us to get a feel for the restaurant scene. Madison has lots of options and many are quite affordable. Whether you are looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, you will find it here. Along the capital square, we enjoyed burgers from DLux and tacos from The Canteen. As we moved closer to the university, we discovered an amazing breakfast at Short Stack Eatery. Even closer to the school is a street filled with student-friendly eateries, like Parthenon Gyros.

7 Reasons to Visit Madison

Our whirlwind adventure in this university city may have only lasted a couple of days, but we packed a ton of fun into our time. After hitting the ground running, we soon discovered that our exploration would have to be concentrated on the heart of the city. With lodging at Double Tree Hilton Downtown, we were able to park our car and walk everywhere. This is a huge plus in our books, as it allows us to work off a few of the calories we pick up during our exploration. Nebraska History Museum – Tales From The Past

Visiting capital cities offers a unique perspective on a state’s history. A trip to Lincoln, Nebraska let us learn more about our neighboring state, as well as chalk up our 14th capital city visit. While it would be nearly impossible for one building to contain all of a region’s history, we find that state museums are a great resource for concise overviews. Each museum offers us a chance to see and learn something new to us. Without a visit to the Nebraska History Museum, we would never have imagined that early postal delivery wagons included a stove to keep the driver warm in the winter.

First People

While Nebraska territory’s history began in 1854, the lands were populated long before European explorers arrived. In prehistoric times, tribes like the Arikara and Pawnee called these lands home. The Arapahoe resided in western Nebraska for over 1000 years. The Cheyenne and Commanche lived more of a nomadic lifestyle and moved throughout the eastern side of the territory. During the 17th Century, the Omaha tribe migrated from the east, as more European settlers landed in the eastern portion of North America. Over a dozen indigenous tribes have called Nebraska territory home throughout history.

Hard Choices

Through our journeys, we have heard many stories about the relocation and elimination of indigenous people. Nebraska territory has its own stories to tell and one that captured our attention was that of Red Cloud. In the late 1800s, the Oglala Lakota leader would stand firm against the U.S. Army in a series of conflicts. One of these involved an 81-man detachment that was sent out to squash a war party. Using a decoy with an injured horse, (It was Crazy Horse who acted as a decoy.) he led the Army into an ambush by more than 2000 Native American forces. The results would be total antihalation of the Army troops. While the battle included multiple indigenous tribes, it would be labeled Red Cloud’s War by the U.S. Army. An investigation by the government showed that the hostilities had been brought on by the encroachment of settlers into Native American lands.

Temporary Exhibit

The Nebraska History Museum contains many other interesting stories, such as that of Red Cloud. While each one has its own merits, I was especially interested in the temporary exhibit on Women’s Suffrage in Nebraska. The third floor of the museum is a dedicated space for rotating exhibits. We like these types of installations, as they create an atmosphere of constantly changing displays. That means that the next time we visit, we will have something new to see, as well as permanent exhibits.

Fighting for Rights

History tells us that the 19th Amendment became law in 1920, but did you know that the Suffrage movement actually began around 1848? That means that for over 70 years, the fight for women’s right to vote was battled out across the growing nation. In that same period of time, 18 new states were added to our flag. In Nebraska, the fight for the right to vote began before the territory achieved statehood. After winning the ability to vote in local school board elections, in 1869, women set their sights on even bigger wins. A Nebraska referendum, in 1882, failed to pass by male voters.

Winning the Vote

This setback created a momentary silence in the Nebraska suffrage movement. During this same time period, many were fighting for Prohibition, which tended to take focus away from the voting rights issue. Instead of giving up, they decided to go after another smaller victory. The Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association fought for the right to vote for city officials. They would find this battle would force them to clash with religious leaders, as well as liquor interests. Once again, male voters squashed their attempt. Finally, in 1919, Nebraska legislators voted unanimously to ratify the 19th Amendment, which ensures women the right to vote.

White Man’s World

While that was a huge victory, it still left people prohibited from the voting booth. In 1868, the 14th Amendment secured voting rights for all males, “regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude”. This sounded promising, but the reality was that many states found devious ways to prevent black males from voting. When the right for women to vote was finally a law, the restrictions that black males found were also levied against black women. Indigenous people also faced restrictions when it came to voting rights. The rights for all to vote would not be complete until the mid-1960s.

Visiting Nebraska History Museum

The stories that we discover during our travels are the fuel that makes us desire to see more of the world around us. Each state, city, and town is filled with unique tales from the past and present. Our visits to capital cities are like the icing on the cake when it comes to learning a state’s history. Lincoln is no exception and the Nebraska History Museum is a good resource for getting an overview of how they got to where they are today. Circus World Baraboo – Ringling’s Winter Home

How many of you remember the excitement of hearing that the circus was coming to town? There was something special about the anticipation of seeing the non-stop excitement associated with the three rings of pageantry. The flow of entertainment captivated us, as performers flew through the air or galloped across the ring. The smell of cotton candy and popcorn filled the air, while the clowns elicited laughs from the crowd. These memories are ingrained in our hearts and heads, but where did the circus go in the winter? We traveled to Circus World Baraboo, their winter headquarters, to learn about the origins of The Greatest Show on Earth. Let’s dive headfirst into the magic of the Ringling Brothers World’s Greatest Shows.

The Fantastic Five

In the 1800s it wasn’t uncommon to have large families. Being a mostly agricultural-based society required a lot of hands to complete the chores. The Ringling (originally Rüngling) family included seven boys. What started as a small group of touring performers would become one of the most recognizable attractions in America. After witnessing a traveling circus in McGregor, Iowa, five of the seven brothers decided to venture into the entertainment business. By late 1882, they had launched their vaudeville-style show. The profits from this endeavor would be funneled back into the business.

Early Days

By the late Spring of 1884, the Ringling brothers opened their first circus. We can imagine that it was quite small, but residents of farming communities would have still been intrigued to see it. Within a couple of years, they had expanded to include their first animal acts. By now, the other two brothers had joined them in this family endeavor. In 1887, the show was renamed “Ringling Bros. United Monsters Show, Great Double Circus, Royal European Menagerie, Museum, Caravan, and Congress of Trained Animals”. We can imagine that this type of bravado would have drawn quite the crowd.

Coming to Town

With each brother bringing their specific talent into play, the circus would continue to expand. Crafty planning ensured the brothers avoided clashes with competing carnivals and circuses. They would often focus on small, neglected villages and towns, where the lack of entertainment meant bigger turnouts. While we have seen circus wagon trains portrayed in movies, we never got to witness one in person. It must have been quite a sight to observe the pageantry proceeding down Main Street, with amazing music, performers, and fantastic creatures in tow.

Wild West meets Circus

By the turn of the century, the Ringling brothers had built one of the largest traveling shows in America. Their largest competitor, Barnum and Bailey, was purchased by the brothers but kept separate for a while. They continued to expand both circuses, until the start of World War I. With attendance diminishing, the brothers combined the two circuses into “The Greatest Show on Earth”. In the meantime, there were still plenty of other sideshows competing for entertainment dollars. Circus World Baraboo has a large warehouse filled with wagons from various circuses and traveling sideshows. As we wandered through the collection, I saw many familiar, and lots of unfamiliar, names. One that I think would have been amazing to witness was Buffalo Bill’s Wild West Show.

Changing Perspective

When we hear the word circus, a certain set of images arise. Most involve human and animal acts performed under the big top. In the early days, there was another aspect to the traveling shows. Many included sideshows that showcased human oddities or disfigurements. Often referred to as “freak” shows, they were a secondary form of entertainment. Assembled under their own tent, hawkers would call out to the passing crowd in an effort to pique curiosity. Sometimes the exhibits were artificially created and touted as something like a mermaid mummy. We saw quite a few examples of these during a visit to the Uranus Sideshow Museum. Over time, the public’s opinion of these types of acts changed, laws were enacted to prohibit them, and they disappeared from the circus.

Clowning Around

While we were touring Circus World Baraboo, some of the staff members informed us that their daily circus was scheduled to begin soon. In fact, one was kind enough to offer us a ride over to the big top. Once there, we made our way inside to witness the magic. It wouldn’t be a circus without clowns and sure enough, there were a couple of acts included in the schedule. While we adults enjoyed the comical humor, it was the children in the audience who were enchanted by the hilarity of their actions. Many acts are fairly simple in design, but the smiles they elicit are timeless.

Majestic Acts

The circus is a truncated version of the three rings we witnessed as children. They still include some thrills and chills. Seeing the elephants marching around the ring reminded us of the intelligence of these giants. In the earlier days of Ringling Brothers Circus, the staff would have been tasked with caring for nearly 30 of these creatures. Of course, there were also 500 horses, 15 camels, and a menagerie of lions, tigers, and other animals. That is why there were 25 structures that made up the winter headquarters of Circus World Baraboo. Another exciting display of talent came from the air. While it wasn’t on the scale of a full-blown trapeze act, it was still thrilling for the audience.

Circus World Baraboo

We enjoyed our visit to Circus World Baraboo and found it to be quite intriguing. While we have enjoyed the circus in the past, we hadn’t given much thought to the amount of work required to keep it running throughout its busy season. When we learned that the winter headquarters were in Wisconsin, it really surprised us. I suppose that facing a cold winter would help you focus on the tasks at hand since there would be fewer distractions. Wandering through all of the exhibits can keep a visitor busy for quite some time, so be sure to allot plenty during your visit. This family-friendly attraction is a good way to see how the public’s perspective of entertainment has changed, yet some parts are still just as thrilling.

Medley Of Meals – St. Charles, Illinois Eateries

Exploring a new destination is certainly a ton of fun, but can also work up quite an appetite. Fortunately, we found a medley of meals during our stay in St. Charles, Illinois. This Midwestern city has a broad selection of eateries, which provide about every cuisine option under the sun. You’ll find opportunities for a delectable breakfast along the Fox River, like the one we had at Kava Diem. Relaxing on their riverside patio, in the morning sunshine, made this visit extra special. Let’s take a look at some of the other tasty stops we found during our visit.

Variety is the Spice of Life

When it comes to breakfast, we tend to look for meals packed with protein. This supplies us with some staying power to sustain us through a busy morning. That doesn’t mean we don’t mix in some sweeter bites. In fact, during a morning meal at Eat At Syrup, we had a chance to sample their Mini Waffle Flight. This picture-perfect plate of goodness seemed to disappear as quickly as it had materialized at our table. Each sweet bite seemed to be even better than the last. Tossing in an enormous five-egg omelet helped provide plenty of protein to hold us over until lunch.

Irish Comfort Food

After a delectable breakfast, we enjoyed a morning of exploring the urban art scene found throughout St. Charles. We combined some shopping at local boutiques, which worked wonders at burning off our morning feast. Soon we were feeling the twinge of hunger building, which signaled it was time for us to continue our medley of meals. Located right along the main drag through St. Charles is McNally’s Irish Pub. Popping inside, we found the space packed with locals. Wading into the fray, we found a tabletop for two. While Crystal munched on a Chicken Cobb Sandwich, I went straight for the Fish and Chips. I’m sure her sammie was delightful, but I was focused on the flaky cod hidden beneath their beer batter. Once again, we departed filled to the gills. Time for some more walking.

Everything but the Kitchen Sink

When we develop our itinerary for a new destination, it’s important for us to include plenty of historic stops. While these are often museums or founding family’s homes, sometimes it happens to be a restaurant. St. Charles provided us an opportunity to include a couple of historic settings to enjoy a medley of meals. Colonial Café has had a presence in the Fox River Valley since 1901. That’s a whole bunch of history. When we see an eatery with this much background, we know it is a local favorite. The Colonial Café has retained its ice cream beginnings but has also added plenty of great comfort food dishes. Heaping plates of enticing vittles include plates like Braised Beef Pot Roast. After chowing down on these tender chunks of beef, I found I had forgotten to leave room for any of their ice creams. Oh well, now we have an excuse for a return visit.

Hidden Pleasure

Preserving historic sites sometimes means modernizing. Club Arcada has been a St. Charles landmark since the 1930s. Changing times have seen the space utilized under other names. In 2017, Ron Onesti brought this majestic structure back to life under its original name. To top it off, he took part of the interior on a trip back in time. While the theater space has retained its original beauty, the uppermost floor has been transformed into a 1920s-style speakeasy. This type of food and fun was too much for us to pass up. It’s hard to say whether it was the delectable dishes or the amazing décor that most impressed us. This was another meal that left us fat and happy.

Medley of Meals

After looking back on the medley of meals we enjoyed in St. Charles, you can see why we seek out walkable destinations. It takes plenty of steps to burn the delicious calories we discover along our journeys. As with most cities, we found far too many eateries for us to sample them all. Our goal is to showcase a good cross-section and let you select the ones that pique your interest. War and Peace – Eisenhower Presidential Library

Our trip to Abilene, Kansas would not be complete without a visit to the site that honors one of the most famous Kansans. The Eisenhower Presidential Library and Boyhood Home is a top destination for travelers from all over the country and the world. They come to Abilene to pay homage and learn more about the man who served as the 34th President of the United States. Our first visit occurred during renovations, so we were excited to get the opportunity to see the space after its facelift. This time, we were able to view the exhibits and discover how Ike handled issues he faced during war and peace.

Ike’s Early Days

The Eisenhower family moved into their six-room house in 1898, and here David and Ida raised their six sons. Abilene, Kansas offered a good place to raise a rambunctious family. We could almost picture Ida shooing the boys outside so that she could get the house straightened up. We would later find out that Ida lived here until the time of her death in 1946. While Dwight’s parents belonged to the International Bible Students Association (later it became Jehovah’s Witnesses), he would remain unaffiliated with a church until later in life. His decision to attend West Point was unpopular with his mother, who felt warfare was wicked.

Meeting Mamie

While stationed in Texas, Eisenhower met Mamie Doud. The two were instantly infatuated with each other. He proposed on Valentine’s Day in 1916 and they married in July of that year. The wedding had to be moved up due to his deployment in WWI. At the start of the war, he was assigned to a post at Fort Leavenworth. This would begin the process of the couple jumping from place to place around the world. During their lifetime together, the couple would end up moving over 30 times.

Strenuous Start

In 1918, Eisenhower moved on to Camp Colt, which was the site of “Pickett’s Charge”, during the Battle of Gettysburg. When his unit received orders to deploy to France, he saw it as an opportunity to excel. Much to his chagrin, the armistice was signed one week before his deployment date. While his tank group would not see combat, the lessons he learned would strengthen his organizational skills. He proved himself to be capable of developing full combat training and supply chains for thousands of troops.

Going To War

Dwight Eisenhower lived during a period that saw two world wars and he served in both. Between the wars, he would spend his career time working with the tank divisions. His ideas for revolutionizing tank warfare were met with great reluctance from his superiors. During a transcontinental Army convoy, in 1919, Eisenhower saw the need for improved roads across America. This was a major issue he would tackle during his presidency. As the world marched into WWII, Eisenhower’s role would greatly expand. Assigned to General Staff in Washington, Dwight created war plans to defeat the Axis forces.

Taking Charge

Due to his lack of battlefield experience during WWI, rival military leaders tried to disparage Eisenhower. While disparaging, this did not stop him from advancing in his leadership role. Eisenhower organized the defeat of German forces in Africa, as well as the taking of Italy. With these victories under his belt, he was promoted to Supreme Allied Commander. The plans for Operation Overlord would require unprecedented cooperation and secrecy. Even Churchill acquiesced control of England’s strategic air forces to Ike’s command. The Normandy Invasion would be the single largest beach assault ever undertaken. His plans would carry the Allied forces through the liberation of Europe. Before the war ended, Eisenhower would be promoted to General of the Army.

War and Peace

Eisenhower was not as interested in running for the presidential office, as some of those around him. He received pressure from many, but it was the urging of a fellow Midwesterner that finally convinced him. President Harry S. Truman had requested Ike run earlier and he jumped into the fray wholeheartedly in June of 1952. Much to the chagrin of the Democrats, Ike switched parties and ran as a Republican. Eisenhower would go on to serve two terms as the last president to have been born in the 19th century. His political career was unusual, in that he had never served in an elected office before the presidency. While many would remember his various achievements, in the words of Ike, “The proudest thing I can claim is that I am from Abilene.”

DLux – Smashed To Perfection

With only a couple of days set aside to explore Madison, we knew we’d have to keep on the move. Obviously, there would need to be meal breaks. Not just to refuel, but so that we could sample some of the flavors of this Midwest city. After a day of museum visits, we were looking forward to one of the local burger joints. DLux is located in the capital square area, so it was just a few steps from our last attraction. Our goal for this visit was to find a burger that is smashed to perfection.

Capital Eats

Like most metropolitan cities, Madison is chocked full of dining destinations. Within sight of the capitol rotunda, we spotted over a dozen choices. Almost every cuisine imaginable can be found here, but this evening we were hankering for some beef. After wrapping up our visit to the Wisconsin History Museum, we strolled around the square to DLux. We had identified this restaurant during our planning phase, and I couldn’t wait to try it out. While we have tasted burgers from all around the country, it’s not often that we find smash burgers so far North.

Trendy Vibe

Entering into DLux, we were greeted by a funky vibe that reminded us of a 1970s lounge. The bar occupied the center of the space and offered a comfortable place for enjoying a local Happy Hour. The color scheme was muted, which made the colorful artwork pop off the walls. It was the art that caught our attention. An assortment of iconic creations, that are easily recoginzable, filled the canvasses. It certainly provided plenty to examine as we perused the menu.

DLux Dishes

The menu at DLux isn’t limited to burgers, but that’s what we were seeking. We passed right over the soups and salads and headed straight for the beef lovers section. There were six versions to choose from during our visit. Each one was packed with its own unique flavor combinations. We noticed that diners could substitute chicken breast or a vegan option, but it didn’t influence our final selections. We chose the Smoke Show for its combination of cheddar cheese, bacon, onion straws, and BBQ sauce. Everything we would expect from the name. Our second burger was Black & Blue, which uses blackened smash burgers that are topped with bacon, onion jam, and chunks of tangy blue cheese.

Smashed to Perfection

The concept behind smash burgers is crispy outside edges with juicy interiors. DLux has perfected this approach and we were shocked at the size of our servings. When you toss in the substantial sides, it was a lot of food. We knew immediately that we wouldn’t finish our meals, but we gave it a valiant effort. In the end, we left the restaurant plump and happy. Since Madison is such a walkable city, we decided to stroll around and let our dinner settle. This was a meal that we would remember for quite some time and one we are pleased to share with you. Food Truck Fun – Grateful Shed

These days food trucks have seen a surge in popularity. This is partly due to the expansion of cuisines being offered by them. Long gone are the days that they merely featured burgers and dogs. Now you can find just about any specialty food being served up with flair. During our visit to Wisconsin Dells, we decided to have some food truck fun by making Grateful Shed our lunch destination. What we discovered is a street food paradise filled where every hour is Happy Hour.

Funky Vibe

It’s not uncommon for us to visit a locally-owned restaurant that has grown into its first brick & mortar. We love finding places like that because we know they got there by being embraced by the locals. It was a little different at Grateful Shed, as here we found food trucks being used in the design of the permanent structure. Stepping through the doorway, we discovered a colorful interior design that begs to be explored. Scanning the room, we spotted a variety of iconic images from days gone by. It was a little like Laugh-In meets roller rink with a side of food truck fun.

Perfect Perch

We decided it would be best to find our seating preference before selecting our food. The list of choices is vast, so it would take a little firsthand knowledge to decide. The floor level has bar seats, as well as booths built into the converted VW microbuses. Heading upstairs, we found more options to choose from. Perhaps we should dine inside a repurposed Greyhound bus. It was almost too much for us, but we finally agreed on our favorite. After our evening of sensory overload, at Wizard’s Quest, we should have been prepared for this type of scene.

Groovy Choices

With this decision made, we were ready to scope out the food truck fun. We’ve attended a few food truck frenzy events, where a variety of trucks all descend upon one location. At Grateful Shed they offer a micro version of that experience. So now we were faced with more choices. Perhaps a couple of slices of pizza would hit the spot. Oh wait, there’s a grilled cheese truck serving up a variety of handheld options. There was also a sweets provider, but we had already made plans for our dessert of the day at a later stop.

Food Fiesta

It was finally decided to check out the Mexican cuisine scene. We have tons of great street taco restaurants in Kansas City, so why not sample the ones in Wisconsin Dells. Pasqual’s Cantina was a popular stop, so we joined the line. They offer six street taco versions and allow customers to mix and match sets of three. We chose Carnitas, Chicken Fajita, and a Gringo. A side of Chips and Guacamole provided some additional protein for our upcoming afternoon of exploring.

Food Truck Fun

Out of all the fun seating options, we couldn’t pass up the VW microbus. Talk about a blast from the past. Our family had one of these during my youth. I can remember the camping trips we took and the excitement they provided, even if we kids usually slept outdoors. We were enjoying our walk down memory lane with all of this food truck fun. Wisconsin Dells is designed as a family-friendly destination. Grateful Shed helps keep the fun rolling with its unique style. What are your favorite food truck dishes?

Urban Playground – St. Charles, Illinois

These days, St. Charles is often mistaken as just a suburb of Chicago. The reality of its beginnings is something far more interesting. To gain a better grasp of its history we spent a couple of days exploring the nooks and crannies of the city. With the Lincoln Highway running just to the south, it is a popular destination for visitors from the surrounding regions. Trains run daily from Chicago, ferrying urban dwellers to this upscale outpost. Today this urban playground has moved on from its early days, but there are still reminders of days gone by. To get a better grasp of the city’s unique history, we dropped by the St. Charles History Museum.

Learning Local History

In the 1830s, the Fox River Valley was recovering from the Black Hawk War. When the government opened the land for settlement, it didn’t take long for this valley to draw attention. By 1840, St. Charles was incorporated. Getting to the village required a three-day journey from Chicago, as the Fox River was not favorable for navigation by large boats. Without a railroad, it left the town isolated. This was finally rectified when the Chicago Great Western Railway created a direct connection. The increased accessibility led to business growth, marking St. Charles as a relaxation destination for Chicago dwellers.

Camp Life

Illinois was spared from any major battles during the Civil War. St. Charles lay in the midst of abolitionist territory and therefore supported the Union. A few months after war was declared, a training facility for a cavalry regiment was created in the young township. Initiated by Colonel John Farnsworth, the 8th Illinois Cavalry would see action in notable battles. Their presence was noted in Fredericksburg, Antietam, Mechanicsville, and Gettysburg. The group also had the honor of being honor guards for Abraham Lincoln’s funeral train. They escorted the fallen president to his final resting place in Springfield.

Pickle Capital

How do you become the pickle capital without producing any pickles? In the 1960s, St. Charles became home to Pickle Packers International. This promotional group touted the benefits of pickles around the world. Some of the promotions included pickle phones, greeting cards, and purses. While the organization would eventually relocate to Washington, the title of Pickle Capital stayed with St. Charles. It was even used as the subject of a question on Jeopardy.

Familiar Name

While the St. Charles History Museum is smaller than some others we’ve visited, it is jam-packed with plenty of artifacts. As we continued to explore, we came across a display about one of the town’s most notable landmarks. Hotel Baker sits just down the road and across the Fox River. While the streetcar no longer runs along Main Street, we could imagine visitors hopping aboard to traverse this urban playground. What a fun way to navigate the rolling hills of Eastern Illinois.

Historic Lodging

With a grasp of St. Charles’s history under our belts, we headed off for our next stop. Our lodging during our visit had been arranged at Hotel Baker and we were anxious to see it with our own eyes. It was a short walk across the river to the front door of this historic hotel. Built in 1928, it was the home of Colonel Baker but also a stop for weary travelers. The site had previously been used by a mill, which was destroyed by fire. When the hotel opened its doors, it was filled with some unusual features. It had its own hydroelectric facility that supplied inexpensive power. This helped run a lighted dance floor, and a radio station in what would become the penthouse suite, in later years.

Checking In

To prove that it was a world-class luxury hotel, they also included a 9-hole miniature golf course and a fishing pond. Travelers were treated to one of the most elaborate parking facilities. This included a Hudson car dealership with a service bay, car wash, and gas station. Inside the hotel, guests would find that each room was decorated in its own style, so no two stays would be the same. All of these features would set a visitor back $2.50 per night. That sounds to us like quite a deal, even for 1930. We were fortunate to get a room with a view overlooking the Fox River.

Urban Playground

These days, Hotel Baker is highly regarded as a wedding destination. The historic vibe, along with amazing architecture, is the perfect backdrop for exchanging vows. In fact, during our two-night stay, we saw three ceremonies take place. It is kind of fun staying in a 53-room luxury hotel and being the only ones not in the wedding group. You can imagine it drew some surprised glances. Our exploration in St. Charles was showing us many sides of this urban playground. While many will visit for the relaxed, upscale vibe, there is also plenty of history to discover. It’s a good thing we planned three days, but even that would only scratch the surface. Wisconsin Veterans Museum – The Reality Of War

War has been with us for as long as history has been recorded. The United States has seen its fair share of conflict in its relative short timespan. While many would liken war to a glorious quest, the truth is horrific. Soldiers, in the midst of the fight, will have a profound sense of purpose, but this is a paradox. Life in the trenches is filled with grief, pain, and terror. As generations pass, the increase in media coverage has given the public a birds eye view of the reality of war. Our visit to the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, in downtown Madison, provided us with some interesting perspective on our nation’s participation in battle.

Call to Arms

One of the most notable conflicts in America was the Civil War. This is in part due to it being one of the few wars that took place on American soil. While the majority of the skirmishes took place in the southern half of the country, the cost of battle was felt throughout our young nation. While the Wisconsin Veterans Museum focuses on the impacts of war on people from the state, it also includes plenty of general information about the various conflicts. They also portray the cause and effects with an unvarnished approach that doesn’t take away from the reality of war, which is that they are violent and brutal.

Life in the Fields

While the impact of war is felt throughout a nation, it is the soldiers who suffer the most. Besides the obvious threat of life ending injury, there are other issues that come with battle. Life in camp was filled with hours of drills, inadequate shelter and supplies, and disease. Many Civil War soldiers were farmers who were called into service. Their day-to-day life did not require the same level of discipline that was pushed on them in camp. Long stretches of boredom led to increased alcoholism. One day they may be scavenging for firewood, while the next day may bring the sheer terror of conflict. The ill feelings developed during the Civil War would impact the nation for generations to come.

A World at War

The early 1900s brought a new kind of war to the globe. Horse power had been the means for mobilization for centuries. Industrialization was sweeping the globe and countries raced for dominance. Recent advancements had brought motorized vehicles to the forefront and allowed easily movement of goods and services. Britain had long been the leader of world power, but an arms race was silently growing. The infrastructure improvements across Europe were priming the region for an explosive change. One of the largest underlying reasons for World War I was political instability. The assassination of Archduke Ferdinand is often considered the spark that set off a chain of events, which led to the conflict. As various countries worked behind the scenes, to form alliances, the stability of Europe began to erode. The beginning of the war revolved around aggression between Serbia and Austria-Hungary. Russia backed Serbia, while Germany threw its weight behind Austria-Hungary.

Different Perspectives

The siege cannons of Germany were rolled out in August, 1914. French and British troops were pulled into the conflict as the world was pushed into war. The United States had adopted a wait-and-see attitude, at the beginning of the war. Doing business with both sides forced America to choose neutrality. Germany’s unfettered aggression, against neutral ships, would be part of the reason for the United States involvement in WWI. While the war was still in its early stages, the United States was in the throws of the Mexican Border War. To divert America’s attention from the European theater, Germany attempted to convince Mexico to attack the U.S. southern border. The expectation had been that this would divert America’s attention away from what was taking place across the Atlantic, but it merely increased the United State’s resolve. While WWI would be called “the war to end all wars”, the truth is it was only the precursor of things to come.

Unparalleled Changes

The end of WWI was signified by the Treaty of Versailles, which laid the guilt heavily on Germany. The levying of excessive reparations left Germany feeling unfairly punished. The smoldering resentment would fester over the next couple of decades. Instability still remained across Europe and tenuous treaties were difficult to maintain. Nowhere was this instability more prevalent than in Germany. This void would allow Hitler and the Nazi Party to gain control of the nation. Still angered by their loss in the first World War, Germany formed alliances with Italy and Japan, against Russia. With memories of the previous war still fresh on their minds, Britain and France were hesitant to engage again. While Germany began their march across the European continent, the United States and Russia were focused on their own internal politics.

Bringing War to the Homefront

When the German-Soviet Nonaggression Pact was signed in 1938, it threw Europe into a panic. When Poland was attacked from both sides, it forced Britain and France to respond. By 1941, Germany had launched a push to invade Britain. It was the Royal Air Force’s defeat of the Luftwaffe, in the Battle of Britain, that would cause Germany to shelf this plan. This war would be examined, in retrospect, more than any military action in history. WWII would prove that the horrors of the First World War were only the tip of the iceberg in human suffering. As we explored the Wisconsin Veterans Museum, we were impressed with the details displayed in the exhibits. Each diorama tells a story about the conditions faced by the troops and details how they responded to the situations.

The Forgotten War

Part of the fallout, from the end of WWII, was the division of the Korean peninsula. The Soviet Union and the U.S split the territory in response to Japan’s aggression during the war. Within a few years, two new states had formed with a dividing line along the 38th parallel. Neither side was content staying within their borders and soon war broke out on the peninsula. America had grown wary of the “Communist Threat”, and the U.S. launched into war to prevent its spread. The “Cold War” was the subject of conversations in the war room, as well as the dining table. While the Korean War ended as a stalemate, the Cold War would continue heating up.

Changing Opinions

By the mid-1950s, the attitude about war was changing in America. The Cold War was continuing to escalate and once again the United States looked at trying to stop the spread of communism. Over the next few years, U.S. involvement in the growing conflict would increase. What began as a mission of supplying and training, had grown into a full-scale involvement by the mid-1960s. Back home, there was a growing anti-war movement, which left the troops between a rock and a hard place. Protests painted a negative picture of all combatants, which followed them when they returned home. For the first time in our country’s history, veterans of a foreign war were shunned when they returned home.

New World Perspective

There is no glory in battle worth the cost required to attain victory. As our world’s political environments continue to evolve, we will face unknown threats. The Wisconsin Veterans Museum details how the battlefield has morphed from open fields of engagement. These days, the fight has moved into the cities and left our soldiers facing an unknown enemy. We can be assured that American troops will rise to the occasion, as they have in the past. It is also obvious that the political aspirations of various leaders will continue to create wars well into the future. If only we could change our direction and give peace a chance.

Lost Canyon Horse Tours – Traveling Through Time

The Wisconsin Dells resembles an alien landscape filled with shady slot canyons. Most were created over 15,000 years ago and have amazed mankind for generations. Passing through the sheltered gorges feels like traveling through time. An excursion on the Dells Boat Tour had given us our first taste of these features, but left us desiring more. We stopped by Lost Canyon Horse Tours for an in-depth look into the deepest land canyon in Wisconsin. Along the way, we would make some new friends.

Hidden Gem

Lost Canyon Horse Tours have been operated by the same family for the past 55 years. Needless to say, they are well versed on every nook and cranny along the way. We arrived near the start of their day and found this offered us a tour for two. After getting acquainted with the steeds who would be hauling us, it was time to climb aboard our chariot. The surrounding landscape shelters public views of the treasure awaiting beyond the tree line. Our guide welcomed us for our memorable excursion into the Wisconsin Dells version of the Magnificent Mile.

Wisconsin’s Deepest Canyon

As our wagon slowly progressed, we moved into the beginning of the cliff-walled gorges that make up Lost Canyon. The trees didn’t so much disappear as they just migrated up the cliff walls. All around, we were surrounded by the green vegetation and shaded crevasses. Seeing the sandstone layers stacked one upon another was something that we never expected to find in Wisconsin. We sat in awe as the ravine ebbed and flowed like an invisible river. All around us, the beauty of nature unfolded in front of our eyes.

Traveling Through Time

Our guide was adept at coaxing his horses through the narrow corridors. At times, it felt as though there was no way the wagon would fit. The team slowly plodded along and the clip-clop of their hoofs echoed through the canyon. That was the only sound that disturbed the air. The Lost Canyon Horse Tours was an opportunity to commune with nature in an undisturbed fashion. It was so peaceful that we spotted deer lounging along the path. Clearly, they were used to the wagon traffic and barely acknowledged our existence.

Close Quarters

We began to believe we were the only humans around, until we saw an approaching wagon. Our guide pulled the wagon to the side and we watched the other tour group pass. It appeared to us that the crowds were beginning to increase, as the morning turned into afternoon. The slow pace of the Lost Canyon Horse Tours allows guests to soak in all of the natural beauty. While our boat tour had us rushing to take in the views, here we felt like time was barely moving. We were truly enjoying the relaxed pace.

Our excursion into Lost Canyon gave us an up-close view of the unique natural features of the Wisconsin Dells. Add in the backstories provided by our tour guide and we finished our visit with a better understanding of this region. While many visitors to the area are concentrating on the myriad of waterparks, we preferred to embrace the nature of the area. Traveling through ravines, that have barely seen any sunlight in thousands of years, was unimaginable. We left the attraction with a newfound appreciation for slot canyons. It was clear that there is much more to the Dells than waterslides and swimming pools. Who else loves these types of attractions?

Eat At Syrup – An Elevated Breakfast

They say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When you have a day packed full of exploring, it’s especially vital. Of course, we find that good food makes the meal that much more memorable. St. Charles, Illinois was proving to be a great walking destination, so we definitely needed to keep up our strength. Starting our day with an elevated breakfast, from Eat At Syrup, was a perfect fit for a pair of road weary travelers. Little did we realize, we were about to have an upscale farmhouse experience.

Eat At Syrup

We were well into our visit in this Chicago suburb and had already created some lasting memories. I don’t know how many of your travel stories revolve around food, but we find many eateries that are especially noteworthy. Eat At Syrup had popped up on our radar during our planning phase and we were anxious to sample their upscale farmhouse breakfast. From the solid gathering that had already assembled, we could see that this place was extremely popular with the locals. That is a positive sight for us and bespeaks of some great eats to come. Just the aroma in the restaurant was enough to get my hunger kicked into high gear.

How Many Eggs?

Let’s just put it out there, the omelets at Eat At Syrup are a mountain of food. When we were haggling over what to order, it was decided to present a couple of mainstream choices. I left Crystal to select the sweet side, while I went hog wild with the savory choice. Seeing the Santa Fe Omelet was enough for me to stop perusing the menu. This gargantuan creation boasts five eggs. (Yes, I said FIVE.) Toss in hickory smoked bacon, avocado, cheddar cheese, and Ranchero salsa for extra punch. Of course, they had to drizzle it with a crema sauce and sprinkle on some chives. This massive meal had so many great flavors combining to keep bringing us back for more.

Plethora of Pancakes

As I said, Crystal was in charge of the sweet side and ordered up the Mini Waffle Flight. This tray of tempting delights allowed us to sample all of the great tastes in one meal. From left to right, each waffle brought its own unique flavor combination. We started with the Chocolate Chip Bacon, which combined sweet and savory all in one. The Bananza surprised us with its cinnamon filling that played well with the fresh bananas. The Maui combines lemon zested mascarpone with coconut and strawberries for a taste of the islands. By the time we made it to the Raspberry Mascarpone, we were finding ourselves in a sugary world of satisfaction.

Fuel for Exploring

We had barely scratched the surface of the St. Charles dining scene and were already immensely impressed. When looking for the perfect couple’s escape, we find that dining options have to be solid. With a distinctive meal at a local speakeasy already under our belt, we were finding this to be one of our best dining destinations. We still had plenty more exploring to do, which means there will be chances to add to our growing list of luscious eats. For now, it was time to walk off some of those calories, which aren’t supposed to count on vacation. How many of you consider dining to be one of the best parts of travel?

Madison’s Tempting Taqueria – The Canteen

Exploring sure can leave us with an appetite. Fortunately, we found that downtown Madison, Wisconsin is filled to the brim with dining options. When lunchtime rolled around, we decided to try our luck at The Canteen. Located in clear view of the capitol building, this place has earned a reputation as Madison’s tempting taqueria, on the square. That’s quite a feat, considering that this area of the city is flush with dining options. We were in heavy-duty research mode, so a delicious lunch was needed to refuel for our afternoon adventures.

Down on the Corner

Our morning had already been filled with activity, including a visit to the Wisconsin Historical Museum. The afternoon would gear up with another museum and a tour of the capital, so our time was limited for lunch. The choice of The Canteen had been made long ago, during our planning phase. Tons of positive reviews had piqued our interest in sampling some South-of-the-Border dishes. We landed on the doorstep just as the staff was unlocking the door for a new day of service. I’m sure we looked anxious, but the truth is, we were!

First Dibs

Sure enough, we were the first customers of the day. Our server led us to a table in the galley-shaped dining room. Bright colors and decorative accents surrounded us from all angles. The use of handwoven bowls adds an extra pop of color, as does the flower-themed wallpaper. Heavy wooden tables and chairs lend a comfortable feeling to the space. Our first surprise came when our server brought out a serving of Duritos instead of the traditional chips & salsa. These crispy wagon wheels of puffed wheat are kicked up with the addition of chili-lime tajin spice. It’s a light and airy snack that quickly became addicting.

Seafood Success

We would have loved to linger over our mealtime, but the clock was ticking. I was looking for a filling meal that brought some interesting flavors to the table. The Canteen offers nearly a dozen options of tacos-by-the-twos. (A fun way to call out a pair.) Being just a stone’s throw from Lake Monona, I opted for Fish Tacos. This particular choice can be grilled or Tecate beer-battered, which I preferred. Red cabbage slaw, citrus salsa, cilantro, and Morita crema add their unique flavors and textures to the dish. Each taco is served on a pair of white corn tortillas, which is helpful to hold in all of the flavors. A squeeze of lime and I was ready to devour these twins.

Big ‘Ole Burrito

Crystal had been snacking on some Chips and Queso Dip while perusing the menu. When she selected the Classic Burrito, it was no surprise to me. Packed to bursting with Mexican rice, refried black beans, and savory chicken; it was calling her name. The flavors don’t stop there, as they also toss in avocado, Chihuahua cheese, and creamy poblano sauce. A cup of salsa verde is provided for those wanting to kick it up a notch. This over-plump offering was sure to challenge her appetite.

Madison’s Tempting Taqueria

If only time would have been on our side, we could have swung back by for their Happy Hour. We would have enjoyed sampling one of their signature margaritas, as well as checking out more of the taco variations. Unfortunately, the life of travel bloggers does come with its own burdens to bear. Still, we were thrilled to have this opportunity to enjoy Madison’s tempting taqueria on the square. With lunch under our belts, it was time to return to our explorations. So much to see and do, but so little time. Perhaps you will have a chance to linger and enjoy this downtown destination.

Discover The Wonders – Wizard Quest

The Wisconsin Dells has long been known for the natural beauty that is tucked away along the banks of the nearby waterways. Many have overlooked another hidden attraction that lies right under their noses in the downtown corridor. Stepping through the doors, visitors enter a world of fantasy where they will discover the wonders of questing. Wizard Quest is a 30,000-square-foot labyrinth of sights and sounds, designed to spark the sleuth in all of us. Armed only with our camera and curiosity, we dove headfirst into this fantastical world.

Tempting Paths

Our first stop in Wisconsin Dells had been an exploratory adventure on the Dells Boat Tours. After taking in the unusual landscape, we were ready to explore downtown. Broadway is the main drag through town and the street is lined with restaurants and shops. During our research phase, we had seen ads for Wizard Quest, and we were intrigued by the pictures we found. The idea of banding together to explore a fantasy world filled with clues seemed like a great way to spend an evening. Once we stepped through the entrance, we knew it was a great choice. Admission to the attraction gives guests two hours to solve as many mysteries, as possible.

Intriguing Characters

The attraction is broken into four worlds; air, water, earth, and fire. Each area is decorated according to its theme. Corridors and pathways lead explorers from one adventure to the next. Along the way, we met some interesting characters, who would offer up a combination of quests and clues. I’m not sure how many quests they have, but we found that they present a variety for all age groups. We noticed groups with varying ages of participants, and all seemed engrossed in their quests.

Fantastic Scenes

Crystal and I chose to forego attempting the quests and just explore the space. The creators have done an amazing job of building a space that completely draws you in. We were enjoying seeing the details that make up each of the realms and we spent the first hour just wandering around. There is plenty of space for each team to get lost in their adventure, and we would watch groups scurrying from one area to the next.

It’s All in the Details

While taking it all in from a distance is fun, it wasn’t until we began diving into the details that we began to discover the wonders of Wizard Quest. Countless dioramas are hidden behind windows and tucked away in corners. Each tells a piece of a story that meshes into one of the adventures. While we were not looking for specific clues, it was obvious that many were strewn within these scenes. The level of detail is astounding and we soon became compelled to discover as many of these spaces, as possible. It looks like we were on our own type of quest.

Teamwork for the Win

Wizard Quest was designed to work as a team-building experience. With such a large space to explore, we noticed some of the same teams passed by over and over. It was hard to tell if they were doing one quest or possibly had moved on to subsequent adventures. It was handy having these others around, as we often would piggyback directions off of them. The labyrinth of passageways can certainly get you turned around and we would often wonder how others got into areas we were missing.

A Clue Takes Shape

It was by chance that we spotted a team disappearing behind a hidden door. Seeing this added a new level of intrigue to our visit. Our new mission was to discover as many of these secrets, as possible. In this room, we found that the teapot was the trigger. By tilting it forward, onto the small pot, it triggered a hidden doorway nearby. Now we were getting places. We would need to return to all of the previously explored areas to see what we had overlooked. Before long, we found ourselves completely engrossed in our mission.

Discover the Wonders

While we have no idea which adventure includes a treasure room, we do know that we found it. Our two hours were drawing to an end, but we felt like we had accomplished a lot. With so many individual quests to embark upon, we can see Wizard Quest as the type of place that begs for multiple visits. Even without any particular direction, we still had a blast. It goes to show that you are never too old to discover the wonders of exploration. Who would you include in your Wizard Questing team?

An Art Filled Escape In St. Charles, Illinois

Vacations offer a chance to broaden our horizons and expand our lives with new experiences. When we are in the planning phase for upcoming trips, we look for opportunities to include a wide spectrum of activities. Each destination serves up its unique flavor, by presenting a selection of attractions. An excursion to St. Charles, Illinois, offered a relaxing art-filled escape along the Fox River. Our timing not only allowed for views of their public art, but we also found ourselves able to enjoy their annual Fine Art Show.

Standing Tall

Each spring, when the flowers burst on the scene, visitors will find another artistic display. All around town, artwork can be discovered. Since we were staying in the heart of downtown, a stroll down to Mt. St. Mary Park was the perfect choice for an artful adventure. We were greeted by Mr. Eggwards, who reminded us of a dapper version of Humpty Dumpty. Fortunately, he appears to have a better sense of balance. Heading into the park, we discovered that a walking path weaves its way for more than a mile through this green space. Strategically located along the route, you will find a variety of sculptures designed to elicit discussion and smiles.

Familiar Vibes

While some of the art pieces leave plenty to interpretation, others tend to direct the viewer in a preconceived fashion. The stainless steel piece on the left is designed using a selection of geometric shapes. The way they are assembled led me to see some sort of futuristic robotic device. Since my mind was running toward the science fiction side, the statue on the right seemed to make a good complement. I spotted this sculpture from afar and was immediately reminded of some alien craft landing near the White House. Sure enough, closer inspection showed this piece to be titled “The Martians Are Coming”. It’s good to find that the artist has a keen sense of humor.

Clever Display

Walking through Mt. St. Mary Park, during late springtime, was a joy. We couldn’t have asked for nicer weather or a more beautiful setting. The Fox River was flowing by and provided a draw for an abundance of feathered friends. We were making our way toward the end of our chosen path when we spotted a lady sitting on a park bench. As we drew closer, we realized that she was one of the many sculptures on display. The piece reminded us of similar hyper-realistic art that we had seen at McNider Art Museum, in Mason City, Iowa. I wonder how often someone has attempted to start a conversation with her.

Fine Art Show

As we came out of the park, we spotted the annual St. Charles Fine Art Fair in full swing. A convenient bridge offered us access to cross the Fox River and make our way to the event. Each Memorial Day weekend, regional and national artists descend upon the city for this celebration. The late spring weather had brought a large turnout of artists, so we were anxious to check out the booths. With free admission and parking, it was obvious that we weren’t the only ones who had this thought. Being so close to Chicago, we were sure that many had made the short pilgrimage to enjoy the event for themselves.

Variety is Key

While we may not be art experts, we do know what we like. Our home office is filled with pieces that we have collected during our travels. St. Charles was a chance to add to this collection. I tend to lean toward the unusual, while Crystal likes pieces more recognizable. Seeing a variety of handmade jewelry, I knew that she would be drawn to those booths. While she explored the offerings, I checked out some of the more bizarre creations. We discovered that they had something for just about every taste imaginable and all of it was handcrafted by true artists.

Getting the Public Involved

The creators behind this annual event wanted to find an interesting way to engage with visitors. A section was partitioned off to hold a variety of children’s activities. This year they chose to include a car that people could decorate with paint or chalk. This ended up being so popular, that within a few hours of the opening of the festival, the vehicle was almost completely covered. We found a small piece to leave our own artistic mark, before heading back to the show. As we strolled through the booths, we were entertained by live music, selfie stations, and tons of people watching. What a great way to enjoy a holiday weekend.

Art-Filled Escape in St. Charles

The decision to visit St. Charles, Illinois ended up being a relaxing adventure. This art-filled escape is a perfect way for families to enjoy some low-cost entertainment, in a fun venue. With all of this being located close to the downtown St. Charles corridor, you can park and navigate it all on foot. This allows for a closer examination of the art and causes visitors to adopt a casual pace of exploration. In the end, you will find the inviting nature of this Midwest city will make your visit an experience to remember. Now, which type of artwork would you want to take home?

Wisconsin Historical Museum – A Power Peddling Past

History is a series of stories told by many voices. While each community will have its historical collections, we find the capital cities will usually be the location of the state museum. Here we can gather a better representation of what has transpired, on a grander scale. Our only previous Wisconsin visit had been to Kenosha, so this stop would give us a better grasp on the entire region’s past. Making our way toward the Wisconsin Historical Museum, in Madison, had brought us directly in front of the state capital. With the glistening white dome for a backdrop, we were ready to explore the path that led to the present.

Life Up North

The Wisconsin Historical Museum is nestled in a multi-story building on the capitol square. Visitors can begin on a higher floor, which takes you back the farthest in time. The early days of settlement, in Wisconsin, were comprised of fur trading and lead mining. As immigrants flowed into the state, they brought with them their customs and skills. Learning to coexist in nature required the construction of communities, which surged with even more newcomers. It was an abundance of natural resources that drew the first settlers to the area.

Tourism Growth

As the state grew in population, word got out of the impressive natural beauty that could be found here. Tourism would blossom in the late 1800s, as affluent citizens looking for ways to escape their urban settings. Hunting lodges and fishing villages became meccas for sports enthusiasts. The Wisconsin Dells would draw throngs of visitors with its surreal landscapes. When the automobile finally arrived on the scene, it increased the availability of access to these recreational sites.

Power of Politics

During this same timeframe, the landscape was also changing on the political scene. All of the big business growth would lead to the rise of an oligarchy of wealthy businessmen. Wielding their riches as a motivator, these business leaders influenced the political leaders to create policies that favored industry. By the late 1880s, the state had reached a tipping point, which would require reform to correct.

Wisconsin Historical Museum

As we made our way through the displays, the history of Wisconsin politics was laid bare in front of us. By the later part of the 1800s, the dynamics of the state had changed drastically from its agricultural beginnings. The explosive growth of industry and technology fueled the rise of city populations. Dangerous working conditions and poor pay were commonplace. The voting public demanded reform and this ushered in an opportunity for ‘Progressives’.

Stirring the Pot

In 1891, a political leader attempted to bribe attorney Robert La Follette, to fix a court case. This infuriated the lawyer, who became a leading force in the movement to reform the political landscape. La Follette spent the next few years traveling the state to speak out against the corruption that came from lumber and railroad barons, as well as corrupt politicians. In 1900, he was elected governor on his pledge to bring reform to Wisconsin. Within a few years, progressives had won races in a variety of political positions. With this newfound support, La Follette was able to institute changes that broke the painful hold of corruption.

Beyond the Politics

While the Wisconsin Historical Museum has plenty of details about political issues, it also provides a glimpse at other aspects of daily life. An annual event that draws visitors from far and wide is the Wisconsin State Fair. This event began in 1851, which is only 10 years after the first fair in America began in New York. Since its origin, it has only been canceled six times. The early days focused primarily on agricultural activities. Over the years, it has expanded to include entertainment events that range from musical guests to a carnival midway. In 2011, the Guinness Book of World records certified the world’s largest Cream Puff. We have to wonder how many people were able to get a taste of the 126 lb. creation.

Another Capital City

Our tour of the Wisconsin Historical Museum opened our eyes to a wide array of stories from the past. This FREE museum is a great start for gaining a perspective of the progression of advancements in the state. Armed with all of this newfound knowledge, we were ready to head out into the city for some in-depth exploration. Madison has the distinction of being the capital city, as well as home to the University of Wisconsin. With so much to see and do, and all easily walkable, we knew this visit was going to be historic. While we may not be badgers, we can certainly appreciate the laid-back vibe of this city. Dells Boat Tour – Wisconsin’s Slot Canyons

Nature has a way of supplying an endless amount of surprises. Many friends have recommended to us a visit to the Wisconsin Dells. Having seen a parade of photos from the area, we were excited to add it to our journeys. Located in the southern half of the state, it lies along the path of the Wisconsin River. While many slot canyons are formed over ages of erosion, the Dells have a shorter period of creation. To get a better understanding of this anomaly, we hopped on the Dells Boat Tour for an up-close look.

Heading Out

Dells Boat Tours offers a few options for visitors. Since we only had time in our schedule for one trip, we chose the Upper Dells Tour. The boats offer seating options inside the cabin or on the top deck. With the sun bearing down on this particular afternoon, we opted to remain in the shade. Before long, we headed off on our two-hour tour up the river. The Wisconsin Dells are a 5-mile gorge that was carved into the underlying sandstone. It is estimated that this change occurred about 15,000 years ago.

Aged Formations

During that time, a portion of North America was covered in a glacial sheet. The glaciers never rested atop the Dells, but the melting ice did create a huge lake nearby. The waters were held back by an ice dam, which allowed the waters to build to a depth of around 150 feet. A sudden failure of this dam resulted in a catastrophic flood. As the water rushed through the area, it cut deep grooves into the sandstone resulting in the slot canyons. As the waters receded, the newly formed landscape came into view.

Popular Place

The Upper Dells Boat Tour includes two disembarkation stops. As the pilot guided us toward the first one, we took in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. The Wisconsin River is a popular destination for water enthusiasts. An assortment of nooks and crannies is perfect for exploring. Quite often, we would spot boaters who had parked along the shoreline to enjoy the amazing views. We also noticed that the cliffs allow swimmers to jump from many of the ledges into the sparkling depths. This is a great way for water lovers to beat the summer heat.

Stop #1 – Witches Gulch

Time flew by and we soon found ourselves pulling into our first stop. After disembarking, we filed along a wooden plankway that led into the hillside. In no time, we found ourselves passing through a series of slot canyons where sunshine struggled to reach the bottom. Each turn opened a new world of wonders. I found myself fascinated by the vegetation growing along the walls, as well as the notably lower temperature of the canyon. The walk leads back to a rest area where we found concessions and restrooms. After a short break, we retraced our steps back to the boat.

Stop #2 – Stand Rock

The boat churned across the river and landed at our second stopping point. This would be one of the most well-known formations in the Wisconsin Dells. Climbing the bank, we found the path that led to Stand rock. This singular outcropping was made famous by photographer H.H. Bennett. He began as a portrait photographer but quickly realized that landscape photos were more lucrative. It was his photos that drew many of the early visitors to the area. His creation of a stop-action shutter allowed him to capture movement for the first time. To prove its effectiveness, he had his son leap the small gap over to Stand Rock. It took a few tries, but he was finally successful. These days, they use a dog to replicate this famous event.

Heading Back

After viewing the leap, it was time to make our way back to the boat. The return ride offered more views of the surrounding landscape. It felt like time whisked by, and soon we were docking back at our starting point. As we disembarked, we left with the memories of the amazing adventure. The sun was growing low in the sky, so our thoughts turned to our evening meal and entertainment. After climbing the stairs back up to street level, we took a moment to look out over the Wisconsin River. We knew that we were in for many more thrills to come.

Dells Boat Tour

Our time in our second Wisconsin city had only just begun, but we were already impressed with the area. Being a family vacation destination, many visitors come here for the waterparks. We intended to show how travelers can have an awesome time without getting wet. Our first excursion was a complete success and we were looking forward to what the next couple of days would bring. Glore Psychiatric Museum – Facing The Past

There are some subjects that people tend to shy away from during conversation. Mental illness is one that can leave people feeling uncomfortable. During one of our outings, we stopped by the St. Joseph Museum Complex to learn more about the history of treating mental disorders. What we discovered inside reminded us that those struggling with unbalanced minds were often treated harshly. The Glore Psychiatric Museum is housed in part of the actual hospital and it feels like it as we wandered through the exhibits. It is the biggest of the six museums that are housed in the complex. Join us on this walk through one of America’s most unusual museums.

Early Misunderstandings

Throughout human history, mental illness has been with us. During the Middle Ages, society was dealing with a variety of health issues. With outbreaks of smallpox, bubonic plague, and leprosy wiping out large numbers of the population, the early forms of health care were fighting a losing battle. Mental illness was considered an imbalance issue, which needed the assistance of physicians to correct. At the same time, the church believed the conditions to stem from demon possession or sorcery. Women with mental conditions were often mistaken as consorting with witches and dealt with by various forms of physical abuse or torture. As time moved forward, treatment for mental illness was slow to advance.

Lunatic Asylum No. 2

By the 19th century, treatments had moved to the use of social isolation. Hospitals, often referred to as insane asylums, had become commonplace. In 1874, Missouri opened the State Hospital for the Insane No. 2 in St. Joseph, which was often just called Lunatic Asylum #2. Starting with 25 patients, it didn’t take long to fill its 275 bed capacity. Over the years, more and more beds were added until by the 1950s it was serving 3000 patients.

The Self-sufficient Days

In the earlier days, the hospital was designed to be self-sufficient. The nearby farmland provided food for the facility. Many of the patients worked the fields and assisted with caring for livestock. The staff needed only procure sugar and salt to supplement the food grown on-site. As the number of beds increased, the ability to remain self-sustaining became more difficult. In 1899, the name was changed to the St. Joseph State Hospital and the number of criminally insane were expanded.

Handling the Masses

As the population of the hospital expanded, so did the main form of treatment. By the 1920s, a new phrase was introduced into the world of mental illness treatment. Psychopharmacology involved the usage of drug therapy to assist in controlling patients. Many of the drugs were designed to put patients into a nearly catatonic state. These new medications were effective in reducing aggressive or harmful behavior, so it was well received at a facility designed to house the criminally insane.

Facing the Past

Moving forward in time, health care continued to experiment on ways to cure and control mental illness. Many of the treatments are now considered barbaric, but at the time were cutting edge experimentation. Patients experiencing manic episodes were subjected to hydrotherapy. They would be submerged in cold water for hours. Mechanical constraints were commonplace, as doctors felt they helped keep patients safe. As the population inside of the asylum grew, these restraints became a way to control overcrowding. The next fad to surface was electroconvulsive shock therapy. The use of electricity to change mental activity became popular in the late 1930s.

Life Changing Therapies

By the late 1940s, another treatment would surface, which offered permanent changes for the patient. Lobotomies involved damaging specific portions of the brain in an effort to prohibit the connections that were causing the maladies. While these surgeries did help calm many of the patients, it would bring changes beyond the bad behaviors. Permanent memory loss and personality changes were commonplace. The next major change in mental health care would involve medications.

Behind the Scenes

For many decades, morphine and opium had been prescribed to calm patients. The side effects of these treatments proved the need for better medications. In the 1950s, Thorazine hit the market. Psychiatrists saw it as the miracle drug that they had been waiting years to see. Along with a variety of other antipsychotic drugs, this was a turning point for mental health care. When these drugs were introduced, there were more than 500,000 patients in asylums across America. By the mid-1990s, this number would drop to around 70,000.

Glore Psychiatric Museum

The treatment of mental illness has come a long way since the Middle Ages. In 1967, an employee of the hospital, named George Glore, opened a small museum in one of the wards. By the time he retired, in the 1990s, the museum had expanded its exhibits to cover the long history of mental illness treatment. By this point, most of the patients had returned to society. Without a need for the asylum, a large portion of the facility was converted into a correctional facility. With three floors of exhibits, the Glore Psychiatric Museum offers a glimpse at the difficult history of treating mental illness. One of the key take-aways we got from our visit is that only by facing the past can we learn to do better in the future.

Our Date With History – Club Arcada

In 1926, Ford was inventing the 40-hour work week, while Author A.A. Milne introduced the world to Winnie-the-Pooh. Prohibition was at its peak and had been in place for over 5 years. Bootleggers had created an extensive network for the distribution of their products. Our lessons at past museums told us that there also existed a plethora of speakeasies. While removing the 18th Amendment was a death blow to bootlegging, there is still nostalgia for those days. A visit to Club Arcada, in St. Charles, Illinois, would be a good way for us to step back in time for our date with history.

Our Time Machine

This unique dining opportunity is located inside the Arcada Theater, which opened in 1926. The owners must have had a lot of faith in their vision. This 1000-seat venue was built in a town of 5000. Just a stone’s throw from the Fox River, Club Arcada has seen a tremendous cavalcade of stars grace the stage. Vaudeville acts were all the rage, and performances by greats like George Burns and Gracie Allen were popular. Musical performers, at the Arcada Theater, included styles from John Phillip Sousa to Kenny Rogers or Three Dog Night. With Chicago less than an hour away, St. Charles was a popular getaway for city dwellers.

Surprise Entrance

We told the doorman that we had arrived for our date with history. He motioned us to a nearby elevator and explained the evening’s password. After a short ride, we were deposited into a room obviously designed to weed out the constables. Once we told the hostess the password, she revealed access to the speakeasy. With a wave of her hand, we were directed into the main dining room. Here we noticed a smaller stage set in a corner of the room that reminded us this place began as a musical venue.

The Main Event

The speakeasy is actually broken into a series of rooms. Some smaller spots are carved out along the perimeter and are sometimes used for VIPs. The main dining room is brightly decorated and shined with the glitz and glamor of the Roaring Twenties. Looking around the room, we noticed all of the staff kept in character of the times by dressing in period garments. This certainly added to the total ambiance of the setting.

Stepping Back in Time

After putting in our drink order, it was time to do a little investigating. The main dining room is named after the dancing duo, Fred & Ginger. Tucked away in a corner, I discovered the romantic Jean Harlow Room. One space that I found particularly appealing is the Charlie Chaplin room. It is filled with photographic equipment, as well as continuous running Chaplin films. I could have lingered here all evening.

Medley of Tastes

By the time I returned to the table, our drinks had arrived. Rum and Gin were popular liquors during the Twenties and held prominent positions on the drink menu. The ones we ordered were delightful, refreshing, and endangered. Our meals followed quickly behind our drink order. Crystal had read my mind and ordered the Charlie Chaplin Chicken. The lemon-garlic sauce had a delightful flavor that begged for more bites. My Mini Sammie Flight featured pot roast, Homemade meatball, and BBQ pork sliders. We were barely halfway through the meal when we knew we would have to ration space for dessert.

Sweet Ending

You can’t have a complete date with history without including some indulgence. After perusing the dessert menu for a bit, we decided to take one each of the New York Cheesecake and Chocolate Indulgence. When the plates arrived, we began wondering what we had done. It was decided to use the divide and conquer method to navigate these huge slices of richness. After a few bites, our pace had slowed to a crawl. While the food was all delicious, it was far more than we were prepared for. Even with fullness taking the lead, it was hard to put down the forks.

Our Date with History

As we said our final farewells to the Roaring Twenties, we found ourselves retracing our steps to the entrance of the Arcada Theater. Our date with history had transported us to a time long ago. From the music to the images and costumes, we found the experience to be quite immersive. We saw some of our fellow diners join in the fun by getting decked out in their own Twenties garb. This is the type of destination that goes beyond dinner and into the realm of entertainment. Have you ever been to a speakeasy?

Fantastic Finger Foods – Felix Street Gourmet

It seems that every destination holds at least one surprise for us. Our return visit to St. Joseph gave us a chance to not only update some previous articles but also add a new eatery. Since we love focusing on downtown areas, we headed to Seventh and Felix to see what we could find. The area is a blend of commercial businesses, boutique shops, and an assortment of public art. After taking in a few of these features, we were ready to nosh on some fantastic finger foods. Sitting on the corner of Eighth and Felix, we found our destination, Felix Street Gourmet. Their interesting business model required a closer look.

Rocking the Downtown

Our standard approach to exploring a new destination is to look for walkable areas downtown. While we had been to St. Joseph previously, this was our first time to concentrate on this particular section. We explored a few of their boutiques, while our primary focus was their art walk. Most of the public art comes in the form of sculptures, but there are some amazing murals thrown into the mix. Just up the street from Felix Street Gourmet, we spotted this music-themed mural. It features a grouping of famous musicians, but the one that drew my attention was Steve Walsh, a former lead singer of the band Kansas.

Humble Beginnings

Once our hunger had grown, we set aside our shopping adventure and moved into meal mode. Stepping into Felix Street Gourmet, we were greeted by a cheese shop. I’ll admit that it caught us off guard, but we pressed on into the next section. Here we found a bar area with a vast assortment of wines and spirits. A staff member spotted us and asked if we were shopping or dining. It was obvious that those looking to create a gourmet dinner would have no problem finding many of the ingredients at this shop. We told him that this was a meal event and he showed us to a table in the well-lit dining room.

Fantastic Finger Foods

The menu at Felix Street Gourmet abounds with an assortment of fantastic finger foods. As we reviewed the menu, we struggled to make it past their selection of charcuterie boards. They also offer flatbread pizzas, an assortment of dips and dippers, and a wide variety of handheld sammies. Even with all of those temptations, it was the idea of a romantic meal of wine and charcuterie that drew us in. This is a meal choice that we have found to be a fun diversion from the standard separate plates we often find. We have seen this option becoming more available, like the ones we discovered at Brew Bank in Topeka, Kansas. Paired with some delectable red wine, our meal was a combination of flavor and conversation.

Moving Ahead

Knowing the reason for our visit, our server introduced us to the owner, Pat Modlin. He asked us if we would like a tour of the space, which we gladly accepted. After passing back through the areas we had already discovered, Pat led us to a second-story space designed for larger parties. He expanded into this area as his business grew. There was a complete remodel to add to make this space his own. Next, he led us to an outdoor patio that is used for special occasions, weekends, and some evenings. From this vantage point, I was able to spot the musician mural we had found earlier. What a great place to kick back and wind down after a long work week.

Excuse Us While We Tear This Up

Now that we had all of the makings of a delicious lunch at our disposal, it was time to tear into it. It was interesting to sample how the various flavors could be combined to create bursts that tickled our taste buds. We discussed how each combination differed from the last. After quenching our hunger, we decided it was time to move on. While our time at Felix Street Gourmet had come to an end, the memory of this experience was sure to linger.

The Pennant – Where Fun And Food Collide

These days there are lots of restaurants vying for your attention. Wherever we roam, we have noticed that more eateries are finding unique ways to draw in a crowd. The Pennant, in downtown Topeka, has discovered a pleasing mix where food and fun collide. Our day of exploring was chugging along, but our need to refuel was obvious from the growing feelings of hunger. There are plenty of options, around downtown, to satisfy any urge. After hearing about a special treat being offered by The Pennant, we knew it was the right choice for this particular excursion.

Catching Our Attention

On a previous visit, we explored some of the art that is found scattered through downtown Topeka. This piece, which gives a nod to our military past and present, was one of our favorites. In fact, we discovered it after dining at Brew Bank, which sits just a block away. It was happening upon this sculpture that offered our first glimpse of The Pennant. Since we had already satisfied our hunger, on that day, I just made a mental note of this location for future reference.

Rolling Thunder

Now that we had a chance to explore it, we wanted to make sure we saw everything The Pennant has to offer. The interesting name for the restaurant is actually a historic nod to a previous eatery. On the second floor of this downtown building, the Pennant Cafeteria dished out meals from 1950 until 1967. The food was made from scratch and was frequented by guests from the capital and surrounding businesses. It seemed like everyone, in those days, loved the dishes being served by Miss Beezley. When the new owners decided to revitalize this space, they felt it appropriate to pay homage to this history in name and style.

Familiar and Fun

To help foster that old-time feel, the owners incorporated the philosophy of using local ingredients. We love it when this happens, as it will usually result in more flavor. On this visit, we wanted to sample a nice lunchtime selection, so we started with a batch of their Twisted Poutine. While we have yet to find a match for the version we discovered in Quebec City, The Pennant has certainly added its own flair to the dish. It starts with the crispy fries, which are topped with Cheddar cheese curds and a mushroom Bordelaise sauce, and then sprinkled with crispy onion strings. Toss in one of their Dino-shakes, and we had a fabulous start to our meal.

The Three B’s

Now that we had the appetizer out of the way, it was time to get to the main courses. Crystal decided that the Bourbon, Black, and Bleu Burger sounded intriguing. When I saw that it starts with Black Angus beef, I was anxious to sample it, as well. The juicy patty comes dressed with blue cheese sauce, bourbon-glazed caramelized onions, and bacon. That’s a whole lot of flavor going on and a side of Onion Rings added interesting accents.

Getting My Cuban On

While she was on her side of the table sorting through the burgers, I discovered a dish I hate to miss. If you have seen some of our previous dining articles, you might realize that I have an affinity for Cuban sandwiches. The Pennant plays up their version with the fun name, Cuban Pickle Crisis. This one comes with all of the base ingredients of ham, pulled pork, Swiss cheese, dill pickles, and mustard. They also toss in a squirt of the house aioli and serve it up on a toasted Telera bun. It was a nice blend of flavors that captures the essence of this popular dish.

2nd Story Fun Zone

Once we finished eating, even though we were unable to clean our plates, it was time to let the fun collide with our food stop. The bowling lanes were currently occupied, so we decided to head upstairs to check out the rest of their space. What we discovered, was a bar area that has a commanding view of the main thoroughfare in front of the restaurant. This would be a great spot to meet some friends or just recharge at the end of a long day. On the other end of the space is a collection of retro arcade games, including Skeeball. While Crystal and I enjoy pinball, we get more competitive when it comes time to roll some Skeeballs. The upstairs kept us occupied for quite some time.

The Pennant

Eventually, we knew it was time to get back to our explorations. We had come to town to see some museums but found that Dino Days had invaded Topeka. A side stop at The Great Overland Station landed us face to face with a T-Rex named Sue. Since it was already occupied with its own lunch, we felt safe enough to turn our backs on it. It seems like fun and food collide in more than one location in downtown Topeka. Eat up Sue, we understand the need to satisfy the hunger for food and exploring.

Pony Express Museum – Riding Into History

In only 19 months, the Pony Express made a lasting impact on American history. Just the mere mention of this unique enterprise stirs images of racing ponies carrying wiry cowboys across the changing landscape. Facing pitfalls and hazards, along the way, many of these young men would etch their names in the history books. We dropped by the Pony Express Museum, in St. Joseph, Missouri, to dive into the stories behind these unlikely champions of mail delivery.

Calling Young Riders

The California Gold Rush and Mormon Exodus had created a need for fast, dependable mail service beyond the Rocky Mountains. By 1857, the Butterfield Overland Mail Service was traversing the 2000-miles in about 25 days. With the Civil War looming on the horizon, the need for shorter delivery times was imperative. William Russell, Alexander Majors, and William Waddell were the three prominent business owners who proposed a solution. By using a shorter route and mounted riders, they believed they could cut the deliveries to 10 days. Many thought this was impossible, but plans moved forward to create the Pony Express.

Swearing-In

What would entice young men to risk life and limb to deliver the mail? In 1860, the average pay for unskilled labor was $15 to $30 per month. The Pony Express was offering riders a chance to earn $125 per month. With the promise of such vast rewards, the supply of willing participants was plentiful. Some strict guidelines came tied to the purse strings, and an oath was sworn by each rider. A revolver and water sack accompanied the slightly built riders, who had to maintain weight under 125 lbs. This left capacity for up to 20 lbs. of mail to be handled in every run. Riders were expected to cover 75 to 100 miles, in a cycle, with pony changes every 10 miles.

Exploring the Pony Express Museum

St. Joseph, Missouri was the eastern terminus, for the route, so it is all fitting that the Pony Express Museum would call it home. As we explored their exhibits, we found many incorporate interactive displays. In the stables, we imagined Johnny Fry preparing to depart on the inaugural run, in 1860. We felt like kids, as we pumped water for the cattle and raced across the prairie on our imaginary ponies. Nearby, we discovered a makeshift structure that replicates one of the 190 express stations.

Bare Necessities

Stepping into the station, we found it to consist of the bare essentials. The express stations came in many shapes and forms. Each station would have sat about 10 miles from the next and offered the rider a two-minute break. The Pony Express route led west out of St. Joseph on the way to Fort Kearney. On a previous trip, we had a chance to visit the Pony Express Barn Museum, in Marysville, Kansas. This is one of the last remaining original structures and gives visitors a chance to better picture their simplicity. We tried to imagine what it would have been like to be charged with maintaining a station. It must have included many hours of solitary existence.

Ride Like the Wind

While the Pony Express riders gained all of the glory, they would have failed without the help of the station keepers. Left alone to tend the stock and keep up the station, they experienced a tough life. Often, they would be the object of attack, as they made easy targets. During the Paiute Indian War, many stations were attacked and burned to the ground. It even required the suspension of deliveries between Carson City and Salt Lake, for about a month.

Rider #1

While every rider was key to the success of the Pony Express, it all had to start with one. There is some argument about it, but the majority of accounts credit Johnny Fry with being the first westbound rider. Born in Kentucky, Fry was an accomplished horseman. It was after a horse race that Alexander major first approached Johnny about a job. Fry accepted the position and became the first leg to launch from the stables in St. Joseph, Missouri. On the inaugural ride, Johnny carried 50 pieces of mail including a congratulatory letter from President Buchanan.

Notable Figures

As we examined the displays at the Pony Express Museum, we read the bios of various riders who traveled across the wild frontier. Some were hired for their knowledge of the territory, while others for their daring attitudes. It was interesting learning how each made their way into this business and what transpired in their lives afterward. The dangers of the route were always present, so it took steady nerves to match up to the challenge. All needed to embrace the code of the business and dedicate themselves to putting mail delivery above everything else.

Riding into History

The days of the Pony Express were limited by the changing technology of the time. After only 19 months, the enterprise was replaced by the telegraph. Even though it was short-lived, the Pony Express has left its mark in the history books. Even today, you will hear references to this long ago business. The daring of the riders encompassed the spirit of the American pioneer. Facing unknown dangers was an everyday occurrence, but they knew that the mail must go through. It’s their resolve that has captured the heart of visitors to the Pony Express Museum. In a way, each of us can be modern-day explorers seeking out new experiences. It all starts by stepping out the door.

Leveling The Field – Brown Vs Board Of Education

American history is filled with events large and small, but some created a reverberation felt throughout the country. While the Civil War had legally brought an end to slavery, it did not prohibit the inequality of segregation. Black people were told they were free, but real life didn’t represent this change. Jim Crow laws had created barriers that precluded black Americans from enjoying the same opportunities as whites, especially in the southern half of the country. Leveling the field would require a fight that led to the Supreme Court.

Brown v. Board Museum

We’ve visited Topeka many times, but have somehow missed the Brown v. Board of Education Museum. This national historic site is located at the Monroe Elementary School. The school was built on the land of one of Topeka’s founding fathers, Jacob Chase. A parcel of Chase’s land was purchased by John Ritchie and his wife, Mary. The couple was abolitionists who helped aid the Underground Railroad. In 1868, three lots of Ritchie’s land were purchased by the Topeka Board of Education. Here they constructed a school for black children. This building would eventually be razed and a new school was built with the addition of 10 more lots. The elementary school took its name from the street that borders the property, where it would operate until 1975.

Learning From the Past

While there are differing viewpoints on the reasons for the Civil War, the issue of slavery played a central role. On farms and plantations throughout the southern half of the nation, enslaved people were prohibited from their rights. Of course, slavery wasn’t limited to these large agricultural estates. Households were also commonplace settings to find forced labor. Our excursions, to cities in the south, have opened our eyes to the expansive use of enslaved people in many parts of our country. Their stories speak volumes about how the mainstream population treated black people as property.

Not Equal Rights

It is estimated that less than 2% of US citizens owned slaves. While this number seems small, it represents about 630,000 people. An 1860 census showed almost 4,000,000 slaves were held in 15 states and territories. Many would automatically picture the deep south, but there were also slaves held as far north as Delaware. At the same time, nearly 400,000 free black people lived in the southern states. While many were successful business owners, they were not treated as equals. The task of freeing the enslaved people was an enormous undertaking that divided a nation.

What Now?

In 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation announced freedom for African Americans in the rebel states. The country was nearing the third year of the Civil War and President Lincoln was looking to renew their passion for the fight. While this move was an important step, it did not impact slavery in the Union States. For it to be effective, the enslaved would have to escape the control of their owner. As the end of the war drew near, many were concerned that the proclamation would be seen as simply a war measure. Lincoln pressed Congress to pass the 13th Amendment, which would ban slavery in all U.S. states and territories. While the law could grant freedom, social cultures would be harder to change.

The Long Road Forward

The task of leveling the field had only begun and Black Americans were finding new barriers. Peonage, which shackled black workers with debt through oppressive loans, was outlawed in 1867, so new ways had to be found to keep blacks segregated. The establishment, in most southern states, found replacements with Jim Crow laws. These local and state laws mandated racial segregation in all public facilities, including schools. In 1896, the Supreme Court ruled that this form of racial segregation was not a violation of the Constitution. Their stipulation was that each race would have facilities that were equal in quality. This approach became known as separate but equal.

The Lawsuits

Fast-forward to the 1950s, and black people were still facing racial segregation six decades later. The NAACP was working to make changes to these laws, by showing how they were not being applied in an atmosphere of equality. Public facilities, schools, and other sites were far from equal in quality. It was time to integrate the American school system, but not without a fight. In 1951, a black Topeka family, named Brown, attempted to enroll their daughter into the elementary school that was closest to their home. The request was denied and she was forced to ride a bus to the segregated black school, which was farther away. Joining with a dozen other families, they filed a class-action lawsuit against the Topeka Board of Education. The District of Kansas U.S. District Court came back with a verdict against the families.

Leveling the Field

The Brown family was not to be dismayed. Represented by the chief counsel for the NAACP, Thurgood Marshall, they pushed the case forward to the Supreme Court. The question posed to the court was whether any separated educational facilities could really be equal. The justices determined, in a 9-0 ruling, that it was not possible. Therefore, racial segregation could not be part of the education system. While it was a huge win toward equality, it did not lay out a path to resolve the issue. We had learned about some of the difficulties in implementing this new decision during a visit to Central High School, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

Facing Discrimination

While many Americans cheered the landmark decision, it was not well accepted in much of the South. The integration of schools moved slowly when it moved at all. The border states did accept the change and moved toward integration, but this was not the case in the Deep South. Resistance was stiff and in many cases, no movement was made. A Massive Resistance strategy was implemented to block desegregation by any means. The removal of black educators and staff was used to limit the ability to gain insight into how far-reaching the fight had seeped into the southern education system. When other attempts failed, entire school systems were shut down to block integration.

The Fight’s Not Over

The fight for leveling the field in education was only one facet of the inequality faced by Black Americans. Even after the decisive victory of Brown v. Board, there remained a large gap between the races. Employment and housing opportunities were filled with unfair practices. As black people migrated to the north, many new housing projects were designed to be racially restrictive. Equal but separate was continuing, but hidden by the use of restrictive clauses and legal jargon. From this atmosphere, heroes arose. While the name Rosa Parks is easily recognizable, too few know that only months prior Claudette Colvin had been arrested for refusing to give up her bus seat in Montgomery, Alabama.

Looking Toward the Future

The Civil Rights Movement, while met with stiff resistance, put a chain of events into action that could not be undone. Each victory brought new freedom, while each defeat renewed the drive for change. The media provided documentation of the violence and discrimination faced by Black Americans on a daily basis. In 1964, the Civil Rights Act would outlaw discrimination on the basis of color, race, religion, or sex. The fight for true equality continues today. It is important to support the sites, like Brown vs. Board of Education, that remind us of the importance of learning from our past.

Grotto Of The Redemption – Iowa’s Precious Gem

While the interstate highways work well for transporting people in the quickest fashion, they leave a lot to be desired for sight-seeing. For decades, we have made the journey to Minnesota to visit Crystal’s relatives. Most of the time, we just want a quick route, but when time allows we venture off the beaten path. A good alternative, from our home in Kansas City, is US Highway 169, which runs from Oklahoma northward. As it stagger-steps its way through Iowa, it brings us surprisingly close to the town of West Bend. It is there that we discovered the Grotto of the Redemption, which is one of Iowa’s precious gems.

Wet Weather

The old saying that into everyone’s life a little rain must fall was certainly true the day we visited. In fact, they were having a real gully washer. Pulling into West Bend, we made our way to the site of the largest man-made Grotto in the world. We were not to be dismayed from checking it out, so we grabbed umbrellas and ventured out. The overcast skies brightened the colors of the landscape, which was in late summer bloom. Being inclement weather, we were the only visitors at the time. While we had made short stops in the past, this visit we would dedicate to learning more about this unique attraction.

Father Dobberstein

The backstory begins with a young man working his way through seminary school. His name was Father Paul Matthias Dobberstein and he was born in Rosenfeld, Germany. At the age of 20, he immigrated to the United States and landed near Milwaukee. During his studies, he came down with a severe case of pneumonia. As he lay on his deathbed, he prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary for a return of his health. In return for this, he would build a shrine in her honor. His illness would pass and after completing his studies, he eventually landed in the middle of northern Iowa. It was here that he began stocking up on rocks of all types for the construction.

Iowa’s Precious Gem

Traveling through Iowa, one would not expect to find a structure constructed from gems and minerals throughout the world. The rain began pouring harder, so we found ourselves seeking refuge in the various caverns that are part of the Grotto of the Redemption. Here we could get a better look at some of the details involved in the construction. Some of the materials are easily recognized, like the crystallized interiors of geodes. A good variety of quartz was used, but then we spotted some lesser known types of mineral. Barite Rose from Oklahoma is visible in a rainbow of shades and so is fluorite. We even spotted pieces of petrified wood that are incorporated in the designs.

Long History

When we first arrived, we had sought shelter in the brick building that serves as a welcome center and museum. While we waited for the first round of heavy rain to let up, we examined the historical exhibits. The Grotto of the Redemption has been around for a long time, so it’s no surprise to see artifacts from different decades. There were a few pieces that we wouldn’t have expected to find. In the center of the room is a long case that holds samples of the various materials used to build the structure. While a portion of the stones were purchased, many were donated by visitors who wished to help see the wonder become a reality.

Grotto of the Redemption Complex

While Father Dobberstein had the vision, a second person would assist in building the Grotto of the Redemption. The humble priest began construction in 1912, after a decade of stockpiling materials. With the aid of a young parishioner, named Matt Szerensce, they set to work constructing the structure over the next 47 years. Nearly one-hundred carloads of stones and minerals went into the project. It would become the largest collection of precious gems and stones in one location. Climbing to the top, by way of one of the staircases, we gained a better perspective of the grand scale of this project.

Various Views

With the rain slowing to a mist, we could spend some time exploring the complex. It is a little overwhelming to attempt seeing it all in one visit. The hues and shades of the stones create intricate patterns. In some places we discovered repeating patterns, but much of the construction seems to be a little more random. A variety of marble statues adorn various nooks and crannies. There are others that are set high to be easily visible from multiple angles. We even found some stained glass inserts that are incorporated into the architecture.

Break From the Road

Before we left the Grotto of the Redemption, we made a stop in the gift shop. Here we could pick from a variety of religious items, as well as souvenirs that commemorated our visit. The rain was rolling back in, so we decided it was time to get back out on the road. We still had many miles to travel and we hoped to see some more unique attractions that are found off of the beaten path.
