Stepping into The History Museum in South Bend feels like walking onto the set of A League of Their Own. One big difference is that this isn’t Hollywood magic; it’s the real story. The museum’s All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL) exhibit brings the history of these groundbreaking athletes to life. It showcases their impact on life beyond the silver screen. As fans of the 1992 film, this was a chance to see how fact compares to fiction. Each exhibit at The History Museum paints a vivid picture of South Bend’s pivotal role in national and local history, making it much more than just a place for baseball fans—it’s a place to understand the stories that shaped the heart of America.

Standing before the South Bend Blue Sox display, I couldn’t help but imagine what it would have been like to suit up for those early games. The roar of the crowd, the weight of the bat—it all felt so real. It made me appreciate how deeply these women shaped the future of sports in ways I hadn’t realized before.

A League of Their Own Connections

While the movie focused on the Rockford Peaches, the real AAGPBL featured a league full of competitive teams, including the Kenosha Comets, Racine Belles, Peoria Redwings, and Fort Wayne Daisies. The South Bend Blue Sox were one of only two teams to last the entire league duration, making them a key part of this chapter in baseball history. The exhibit brings to life the rivalries, victories, and evolving rules that shaped the league’s decade-long run through team memorabilia and historical records.

Through period artifacts, personal letters, and newspaper accounts, the exhibit brings to life the fierce battles and political upheaval on the Kansas-Missouri border—territory we’ve explored in our travels.

The Brutal Reality of Our Past

Another unexpected connection came through the museum’s coverage of the Trail of Death, the forced removal of the Potawatomi people from Indiana to Kansas in 1838. This tragic journey passed near our oldest son’s home, making the history feel even more personal. The exhibit shares heartbreaking details of the 660-mile march, where nearly 40 Potawatomi lost their lives. As someone who calls that area home, learning about the Trail of Death hit me harder than I expected. Knowing that the land I walk on today was once part of such a tragic and painful journey made me appreciate the resilience of the Potawatomi people. It’s a stark reminder that history is all around us, whether we realize it or not.

Downtown Dining

L Street Kitchen sits in the heart of downtown South Bend, making it a perfect stop for locals and visitors alike. Its central location puts it within walking distance of many popular attractions, making it an easy addition to our itinerary. This local haunt feels like a hidden gem among the bustling streets. Its large windows allowed natural light to flood in, offering a glimpse of downtown life while we enjoyed our meal.

A Local Favorite

Stepping inside, we were immediately struck by L Street Kitchen’s cozy, welcoming vibe. The space balanced modern touches with a homey feel, creating a setting that encouraged us to linger. Friendly staff greeted us with warm smiles, making us feel like old friends. Carrying a large camera always brings side glances and makes a great conversation starter. We were happy to tell them our purpose and offer travel ideas for places closer to our hometown.

Comfort Foods

For our meal, Crystal chose the Avocado Benedict and I went with their Chicken & Biscuit. The Avocado Benedict featured perfectly poached eggs, creamy avocado, and a light hollandaise sauce atop toasted English muffins. It was fresh, flavorful, and satisfying. The Chicken & Biscuit was pure comfort food. Imagine tender chicken smothered in rich, savory gravy and served over a flaky, buttery biscuit. Each bite was a delight and highlighted the kitchen’s dedication to using quality ingredients. It kicked off our dining in South Bend and kept us full for hours!

Funny Name - Great Flavors

Our visit to Evil Czech Brewery felt like stepping into a playground for foodies and beer enthusiasts. The brewery’s fun-focused vibe is evident from the moment we arrived. This place is perfect for a casual evening or a weekend hangout. The vibe invites you to kick back and enjoy. Our October visit included quirky décor and upbeat music, making it clear this spot is all about good times and great flavors. Their outdoor patio offers a laid-back atmosphere with plenty of seating and would be great on a summer evening.

A Shared Meal

For our meal, we started with the Rip-N-Dip, a crowd favorite that lived up to the hype. The gooey cheese-filled bread, served with marinara sauce, was a perfect way to kick off our dining experience. For the main course, we couldn’t resist The 547 Burger. This double-patty masterpiece was topped with bacon, cheese, and their signature sauce. The combination of flavors was indulgent and satisfying. We could see why it’s a menu highlight. Paired with one of their craft brews, it was a meal that showcased Evil Czech’s dedication to bold, unforgettable dishes.

There’s something magical about stepping into a world frozen in time, and the Studebaker Museum in South Bend, Indiana, offers exactly that.
