The exhibits showcased life-sized dioramas of lions in their natural habitat, capturing the drama and beauty of the African savannah. Detailed scenes depicted a pride on the hunt, their powerful forms frozen mid-action. Informative panels shared fascinating facts about their social structure, hunting tactics, and conservation challenges. The realism of the displays made it feel as if we had stepped into their world, offering a closer understanding of these majestic predators.

Each exhibit transports visitors to a different corner of the globe, showcasing creatures in lifelike settings. We marveled at hyenas stalking the savannah, polar bears braving icy landscapes, and jaguars hidden in dense jungles. The attention to detail is astonishing—every scene tells a story if you look closely.

100 years and 16 presidents ago, The Cozy Inn opened in Salina, Kansas. Bob Kinkel, the original owner, used his tiny space to whip up palm-sized bites of beef. He got the idea from White Castle, who had began operations one year earlier in Wichita. Churning out dozens of mini-burgers at a time, he would slide them down the counter atop sheets of waxed paper. It’s likely that this was where the term “sliders” began. We stopped in to check out their burgers by the bagful and find out what has kept this business in the forefront for over a century.

100 Years and Counting

Staying small has helped The Cozy Inn survive hard times. During the Depression, many large scale restaurants shuttered their doors due to rising costs. This inexpensive meal option, limited menu, and small staff allowed this burger joint to remain nimble. In the 1940s, two new military bases opened nearby. The Cozy Inn began receiving visits from enlisted men and their families, which provided a boost to sales. The 1980s saw a revitalization of downtown Salina, which threatened the future of the restaurant. Public outcry would help save the business and provided the spark for an exterior renovation.

Keeping with Tradition

Over time, the original owners passed away and the business changed hands. In 2007, Steve Howard became sole owner of The Cozy Inn. Growing up in Salina, he knew the value of retaining the traditions that made the business famous. The six-stool design has remained, as well as the original grill top. The grill will hold up to 55 burgers at a time and Steve has often found himself at full capacity. Even with a flurry of customers, his infection smile greets you as you pass through the doorway.

Six-Stool Diner

In 1922, the six-stool diner was becoming popular, although it’s a fad that would disappear with time. Stepping through the door, we were greeted with the aroma of grilled beef and onions. It’s the kind of smell that permeates your clothes and reminds you of your visit for the entire day. The stools were occupied and it was standing-room only. For a second we considered using the walk-up window, but decided we wanted the whole experience. We stood there admiring the constant buzz of activity behind the counter. They have certainly perfected the assembly-line style of building burgers by the bagful.

Simple Pleasures

The capacity to produce dozens of burgers at a time means that the wait wasn’t too long for our meal. We watched as those in front of us received their orders and dived into their sliders. The menu is about as basic as you will find. Cozy burgers come as singles or doubles and topped with onions and pickle. If you are feeding a crowd (or just really hungry) you can get them by the bagful. We ordered a half-dozen, but they also offer up to 48 burger quantities. Our order included; a half-dozen Cozy burgers, one bag of chips, and a root beer. Since the six stools were all occupied, we opted to enjoy our meal at one of their retro outdoor tables.

Burgers by the Bagful

When other customers discovered it was our first visit, they happily shared their earliest memories of the Cozy Inn. It was apparent that this place has created a following that borders on becoming a cult classic. With each story, we became increasingly eager to sample the sliders for ourselves. Opening our bagful of burgers, we were greeted by the delightful smell that we had found inside. My mouth was already watering by the time I had everything laid out before us. Diving in without hesitation, we we quickly engrossed in our meal.

The Cozy Inn

Our visit to Salina, Kansas was made to visit the Smoky Hill Museum, so adding this lunch stop was a bonus. As we made our way back to our car, the conversation focused on the devouring that we had just completed. We knew the flavor of our burgers by the bagful would stay with us far down the road. This is exactly the kind of meal that fits perfectly into a road trip. After all, it was quick, unique, and delicious. What more could anyone ask for from a 100-year-old establishment?

We are going to let you in on a little secret. There is gold in the Smoky Hills. It’s not be nuggets of the shiny substance that has been the reason for mass migrations. The precious treasure we are talking about is found in the local attractions found in a variety of towns and cities. The fertile rolling hills have attracted visitors for thousands of years. Many came to make a home, while others were merely passing through the Crossroads of the Heartland. With all of this activity, we were glad to see that the Smoky Hill Museum has recorded some of these excursions. This FREE Salina, Kansas museum is a great place to gain some new perspectives.

Early Explorers

The search for gold in the Smoky Hills has been going on for over 1500 years. Way back in 1541, Francisco de Coronado first laid eyes on the Smoky Hill River. His quest was to discover the fabled city of ‘Quivira’. While he failed to find gold, he did happen upon the thatched villages of the Wichita tribe. In a letter to the King of Spain, he suggested these lands were the best he had seen for producing all of the products of Spain. Many of the native nuts and fruits were similar to those from his native lands. Subsequent explorations would be made by famous explorers like John Fremont and Zebulon Pike.

Life on the Plains

The Smoky Hill Museum is compact but filled with treasures. They have designed the spaces to be interactive and educational. This family-friendly attraction allows visitors to pass through time as they learn the direct connection between the land and the people who reside there. A model of a one-room pioneer house reminded us of the value of modern conveniences. Can you imagine what life was like facing the changing seasons in Kansas?

Kid Friendly

Like most museums, Smoky Hill has rotating exhibits. Let’s Play is one that will run through November 26, 2022. We enjoy seeing these types of displays, as it makes each visit a little different. This particular exhibit focused on toys and the kids who played with them. We felt that this approach brought a personal touch that helps visitors connect with the story. Stepping into the timeline, we found ourselves transported back to the late 1890s. It is interesting to see how some of those early games, like Tic-Tac-Toe, are still played around the world.

Getting Local

Back in the pre-television days, people got their entertainment from the radio. We’ve all seen the movies or shows that have families sitting around listening to their favorite programs. The Smoky Hill Museum explains the usage of radio in terms that are easy to understand. That is a big deal when you are visiting with a group that has a wide age range. Seeing other museum visitors confirmed the importance of this approach.

True Life

Taking a deeper dive into the exhibit, we found ourselves intrigued by the life and times of Dick & Devere. These junior sleuths became embroiled in a wide range of adventures. While the names are fictitious, they were based on real children from Salina. On top of these rascals escapades, visitors can also listen to excerpts from popular radio shows of the 30s and 40s. Having grown up in the television era, it was intriguing to hear how descriptive the programs were, as they played out the exciting exploits.

Smoky Hill Museum

These little nuggets of fun make our travels more interesting. Each stop offers some stories that help us connect with the locals. Learning about life in the Crossroads of the Heartland reminded us why we love our home state. We are planning to make more visits to this region in the future. There is still a lot to explore and share with all of you. If you are familiar with this area, we’d love to hear your suggestions for places to visit. Thanks!
