Oregon Coast Road Trip – Boiler Bay to Gold Beach

The second half of our Oregon Coast road trip began in a quiet hush at Boiler Bay. The morning mist hovered just above the water like a promise waiting to unfold. We stepped out of the car with coffee in hand, letting the cool air envelop us.

The first leg of this journey had brought coastal views that mesmerized us. This day dawned with the promise to be even better. We knew the road ahead would offer plenty of opportunities to explore, but this moment felt better spent simply watching the ocean breathe.

I found myself thinking that this stretch of coast already felt different. It was slower, more deliberate, as if it wanted us to notice every detail before moving on.

Whale Watching at Depoe Bay

Depoe Bay welcomed us with a bit of charm and the kind of stop that invites you to wander. We took our time walking through the oceanfront shops, stretching our legs and letting curiosity guide us from one doorway to the next.

Inside one store, we struck up a conversation with the owner, who shared a tip that would change the way we looked at the ocean for the rest of the day. He told us to watch for the spray from a whale’s blowhole, followed closely by the flick of a tail as it dives for food.

Armed with that knowledge, we stepped back outside and scanned the water. It turned the ocean into something alive with possibility, each wave now holding the chance of a fleeting but unforgettable moment. This bay is well known for hosting a pod of gray whales, and it didn’t take long before we spotted one.

The Mystery of Devil’s Punchbowl

Continuing south on Highway 101 brought us to Devil’s Punchbowl, a place that feels both dramatic and mysterious at the same time. The natural formation carved into the rock created a bowl where the ocean churned with energy.

We stood there watching the water surge and swirl, trying to imagine the forces that shaped it over countless years. It was not hard to see why this place earned its name.

The pounding surf crashed along the rock, sending spray skyward. It was louder here, more intense, as if the coastline itself was speaking.

Life in the Tide Pools

Just beyond the Punchbowl, we wandered down to explore the tide pools, where the ocean reveals its quieter side. It felt like stepping into another world, one that exists just beneath the surface.

We crouched low, pointing out tiny creatures tucked into the rocks. Starfish clung to the stone, while small fish darted between pools of water left behind by the receding tide.

Our excitement was contagious as we spotted each new detail. These were the moments that reminded us how much there is to see when you slow down and look a little closer.

Watching the Rhythm of the Surfers

Further down the coast, we pulled over again, this time drawn in by the sight of surfers waiting patiently for their moment. There was a rhythm to it, a quiet understanding between them and the ocean.

We watched as one after another caught a wave, riding it toward the shore with a mix of balance and instinct. Some made it look effortless, while others took a tumble and came up laughing.

It was a reminder that this Oregon Coast road trip was not just about places, but about the people who find their own connection to the water.

Chorus of Sea Lions

Newport greeted us with a sound we could hear before we even saw its source. The docks were alive with sea lions, their barking echoing across the harbor in a loud and lively chorus.

After finding a nearby parking spot, we followed the sound to its source. A wooden dock has become home to sunning sea lions, and people gather to watch the action. We stood there for a while, watching as they shifted and jostled for the best spots in the sun. Some sprawled out lazily, while others nudged their neighbors aside with surprising determination.

Crystal laughed at the constant commotion, and I could not help but think that this stop added a sense of personality to our Oregon Coast road trip that we had not expected.

The Sudden Burst at Spouting Horn

Our next stop came quickly but left a lasting impression. At Spouting Horn, we watched as waves forced water through a natural opening in the rock, sending spray shooting into the air.

Each burst came with a bit of anticipation. You could hear the ocean building before the water erupted upward in a sudden rush.

We lingered just long enough to see it a few times, knowing the road was calling us onward. Still, it was one of those moments that stay with you, simple yet unforgettable.

A Meal to Remember

By the time we reached Florence, we were more than ready for dinner. Nosh Eatery turned out to be one of those places you stumble upon and immediately feel lucky to have found.

Crystal and I shared a look as the Steak Stack arrived at the table. Tender flat iron steak sat piled high with fried brussels sprouts, onion straws, and Rogue Smoky Blue cheese, all resting on a bed of mashed potatoes.

It was the kind of meal that makes you pause between bites to appreciate it. Along this Oregon Coast road trip, it stood out as one of those unexpected highlights that you talk about long after the trip is over.

Surprise Stop at Shark Fin Rock

Not every memorable stop is planned. The day was slipping by, so we decided to hurry on to our hotel. As we continued south, we happened to spot Shark Fin Rock near Pistol River, rising sharply from the landscape like something out of a story.

We pulled over without hesitation.

The formation made for the perfect backdrop, and we took a few selfies that we knew would help us hold on to this moment for years to come. Sometimes the best parts of a trip are the ones you never saw coming.

Sunset Stay in Gold Beach

Arriving in Gold Beach felt like reaching a well-earned destination. The Pacific Reef Hotel welcomed us with a room that offered more than just a place to rest.

Our balcony, complete with rocking chairs, became the perfect spot to watch the sunset. The sky shifted through its colors once again, casting a glow over the ocean that felt both calming and surreal.

As night settled in, the hotel surprised us with a light show that brought guests together in quiet appreciation. It was a fitting end to a full day along the Oregon Coast.

Reflections from the Road

Looking back, this stretch of Highway 101 gave us more than just beautiful views. It offered moments of connection, discovery, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

From the misty start at Boiler Bay to the final evening in Gold Beach, every stop added its own story to the journey. The whales, the tide pools, the sea lions, and even the unexpected turns all played a part.

As autumn settles over Indiana, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo transforms into a breathtaking haven of colorful leaves, crisp air, and tranquil beauty. Fall is a perfect time to explore this popular zoo, as the summer crowds thin and nature’s artistry takes center stage. A leisurely morning walk through the zoo provided us with a serene experience, where the sounds of rustling leaves and distant animal calls created a peaceful escape from the hustle of city life.

Fall Colors and Scenic Strolls

Arriving early in the morning, we were greeted by the soft hues of dawn filtering through the vibrant trees. The crispness in the air carries the scent of fallen leaves, enhancing the seasonal charm. With fewer guests at this hour, the pathways feel like our personal trails winding through a wonderland of nature and wildlife. We enjoy this season and the assortment of vibrant colors it brings. The park had been decorated with hints of autumn, making for a truly immersive experience.

Animals at Ease

The cooler temperatures make animals more active yet calm, allowing them to enjoy the refreshing change from the summer heat. Capuchin monkeys snack quietly on a morning meal. A hyena takes in the golden morning sunlight, stretching lazily before beginning their day. The zoo’s African savanna exhibit comes alive with wildebeests and zebras grazing at an unhurried pace, taking in the pleasant weather alongside their human visitors.

A Lazy Morning

The landscape of the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo in fall is nothing short of mesmerizing. Fiery reds, deep oranges, and glowing yellows create a canopy of color above the winding paths. Wandering deeper into the zoo, we found the full beauty of fall revealed itself. In the Outback, we spotted kangaroos lounging contentedly in piles of fallen leaves, their soft fur blending with the autumn tones. Like us, they found the peaceful morning a time for reflection.

A Zoo with History

Established in 1965, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has grown into one of the top-ranked zoos in the nation. Their strong conservation efforts include world-class habitats, each designed to transport guests to different corners of the world. Red pandas, often elusive in warmer months, were enjoying the fall temperatures. We are amazed by how their striking coats blend perfectly with the autumn scenery. Their unique enclosure allows them to move between spaces, while providing unique viewing opportunities.

Family-Friendly Fun

Beyond the beautiful sights and fascinating animals, the zoo offers interactive attractions that delight visitors of all ages. We spotted multiple sites where children of all ages can let their imaginations go wild. Imagine yourself on safari, planning your day from inside a tent. Jump into a jeep and pretend to race across the vast Serengeti. We love how these hands-on accents incorporate into the vibrant landscape.

Our Changing Lives – A New Chapter Begins

Where does the time go? It’s hard to fathom that this newly married couple has become seasoned travel veterans. Back in 1981, our lives were changing rapidly. I began my career in flexible packaging in January. September brought our wedding, and before long, we started a family. Now, more than four decades down the road, we are moving into a new phase of life, retirement. How fitting is it that Crystal chose “Our Changing Lives” for our blog?

A Long Career

When I started with the company, I was employee number 8. The business was housed in a small space in the Fairfax District of Kansas City, Kansas. We moved to a new site just a few miles down the road in 1985. I remember how we rushed to move before we even sealed the floors. Our numbers were small in those days, but the company leader had a vision to grow. It seemed like we were always shorthanded, but I was happy to accept all of the overtime work available. I remember averaging over 80 hours per week for years in a row.

Unexpected Accolades

My willingness to go above and beyond helped me advance through the company. When the company was purchased at the start of the 2000s, it opened an opportunity for me to move out of production and into the office. My “work first” mentality earned me a reputation as hard-nosed, but it was what the company needed to move forward. Sometimes I was challenging to work with, but I always kept the end goal of retirement in mind. I knew the only person putting money in our household was me, so I was driven to earn as much as possible. At one point, I had earned the moniker of “The General”.

Sweet Surprises

In 2009, I was offered the position of Estimator. Up until that point, there had not been a centralized pricing scheme. Here again, my tenacious approach paid off. As the company flourished, we all reaped the rewards. After 15 more years, I could feel my work time ending. I had burned bright for over 42 years, but my passion for the industry was waning. Our Changing Lives had already been up and running for almost eight years, and I could feel it drawing me to become a full-time blogger. Parting after a long career is frightening and exhilarating at the same time. Crystal and I spent a couple of months preparing for retirement, as it is not something to be entered into on a whim.

Parting Pleasantries

Deciding to change industries is never easy, especially when you’ve been in the same one for four decades. I had a lot of support from my coworkers and the company executives. They clarified that I could stay as long as I wanted, but the years had caught up with me. After I gave them my notice of departure, the countdown began in earnest. As my “final day” drew nearer, I contracted what Crystal calls “senioritis”. Cross-training my replacements kept my mind occupied at work. Those hours away from the office, I would contemplate life on the outside.

Heading into Our Changing Lives

For years, I immersed myself in my job, which consumed me. Crystal and I found ourselves once again facing the reality of Our Changing Lives. This new chapter has reenergized me, and I can’t wait to see what it holds. For decades, we have dreamed of seeing more of North America. This winter, we will spend time planning our blog’s future direction. We know it will have lots of family-friendly places to see. We also plan on sharing more of the personal side to show that there is plenty of life after retirement.
