While I see where they got their start at Sid’s Diner in El Reno, the use of onions as a burger extender began during the Depression. Sid’s was the first to incorporate it into their business model.

Onionburgers are NOT a statewide legacy. They only showed up after El Reno started drawing people from around the world to their Onionburger Days. Onionburgers didn’t originate in OKC, and they have not been traditionally made “all over Oklahoma”. They’re El Reno’s sole claim to fame. Credit where credit is due.
