Dust drifted across the prairie as freight wagons creaked westward along the Santa Fe Trail, carrying supplies through a landscape filled with uncertainty. Soldiers scanned the horizon for danger while traders pushed deeper into the frontier. Today, Fort Larned National Historic Site preserves those echoes of the American West with remarkable clarity. During Memorial Day weekend, we stopped at Fort Larned while driving home from Dodge City. We quickly realized this was far more than another historic landmark.

Located near Larned, Kansas, the site is operated by the National Park Service and contains one of the best-preserved frontier military posts in the country. Unlike some reconstructed western forts, nearly all of the original sandstone buildings remain standing. Walking through the grounds felt less like visiting a museum and more like stepping directly into the complicated history of the Great Plains.

Before Borders Changed the Plains

Long before American expansion reached Kansas, Indigenous tribes thrived across the plains surrounding present-day Fort Larned. The region was home to native people, including the Kiowa, Comanche, Cheyenne, Arapaho, Pawnee, and Apache. Each has deep cultural ties to the land. These communities followed seasonal migrations, hunted buffalo, traded goods, and maintained established routes across the prairie centuries before settlers arrived.

The Louisiana Purchase in 1803 dramatically reshaped the region’s future, even though Indigenous nations had long controlled and understood these lands. Expanding trade and military activity soon followed, bringing increasing pressure onto the plains. The Santa Fe Trail eventually cut through territory that had long been part of Indigenous life and commerce, setting the stage for both cooperation and conflict.

The Dangerous Importance of the Santa Fe Trail

By the 1850s, the Santa Fe Trail had become one of the busiest commercial routes in the American West. Freight wagons carried manufactured goods southwest toward New Mexico. They would return east with silver, wool, and other valuable products. As wagon traffic increased, so did concerns about attacks on travelers and supply trains.

The U.S. Army established Fort Larned in 1859 to help protect this vital route. Originally known as Camp on Pawnee Fork, the fort sat close to the Arkansas River and near one of the trail’s busiest crossings. Soldiers stationed here escorted wagon trains, guarded mail routes, and attempted to maintain peace. This was often difficult for traders, settlers, and Indigenous tribes whose lives were rapidly changing due to westward expansion.

Compared to Fort Scott, which developed closer to settled communities in eastern Kansas, this outpost felt much more isolated and directly connected to the rugged realities of frontier travel.

A Fort Without Walls

One of the most surprising details about the fort is its open design. Unlike the stereotypical Western forts seen in movies, there were no towering wooden walls surrounding the buildings. At first glance, the layout almost feels vulnerable against the endless prairie.

The military intentionally avoided building walls because they feared attackers could use them as cover during sneak assaults. The lack of nearby timber also made large wooden fortifications impractical. Instead, the Army relied on open sightlines across the plains and strategically placed buildings to defend the post.

Standing in the center of the parade grounds, we could easily imagine how exposed soldiers must have felt while stationed so far from major settlements. The openness created a constant reminder that the frontier could change in an instant.

Sandstone Buildings That Refused to Disappear

Early structures at the fort were built from adobe and temporary materials, but harsh weather quickly revealed the need for something stronger. Eventually, workers quarried local sandstone to create the buildings that still stand today.

The resulting architecture gives the site a remarkably authentic appearance. Officers’ quarters, barracks, the commissary, and the guardhouse all retain much of their original character. Daily Life on a Remote Military Outpost

Life at Fort Larned could be exhausting, repetitive, and isolated. Soldiers spent their days performing drills, maintaining equipment, standing guard duty, caring for horses, and escorting wagon trains along the trail. Harsh weather often made conditions even more difficult.

Meals were simple and heavily dependent on available supplies. Salt pork, beans, bread, and coffee appeared regularly on military menus. During periods of shortage, fresh food became difficult to obtain. Soldiers also faced diseases, boredom, and the emotional strain of serving far from home.

We enjoyed seeing how interpreters demonstrated these daily routines during our visit. A conversation with the fort’s baker produced an unexpected factoid. The bread they baked had to sit for 24 to 48 hours before it was consumed. The Army considered it perilous to eat fresh bread, fearing what the yeast might do to the soldiers.

The Buffalo Soldiers of Fort Larned

Following the Civil War, African American regiments known as Buffalo Soldiers served throughout the western frontier, including at Fort Larned. The nickname was reportedly given by Indigenous tribes who admired the soldiers’ courage and resilience.

These regiments played a major role in protecting mail routes, escorting travelers, and helping enforce federal policies across the plains. Despite their military service, Buffalo Soldiers endured discrimination, unequal treatment, and difficult assignments within the segregated Army.

Their presence at the fort represents an important chapter in both military and African American history. Learning about their contributions added another layer to the site beyond the familiar stories often associated with Western expansion.

Violence Across the Plains

Relations between Indigenous tribes, settlers, traders, and the military grew increasingly tense during the mid-1800s. Expanding migration routes and broken agreements created deep mistrust throughout the region.

One of the most devastating turning points came with the Sand Creek Massacre in 1864, when Colorado militia attacked a peaceful Cheyenne and Arapaho encampment. The massacre shocked many Americans and intensified violence across the Great Plains. Fear, retaliation, and military campaigns increased throughout the following years.

Although the fort itself was not the location of the massacre, events like Sand Creek directly affected the soldiers stationed here and the broader military presence across Kansas. Interpreting this history requires acknowledging the painful realities tied to westward expansion.

Inside the Fort Hospital

Medical care on the frontier presented enormous challenges. The post-hospital treated injuries and illnesses, and outbreaks spread quickly among soldiers living in close quarters. Doctors worked with limited supplies and knowledge compared to modern medicine.

One unusual requirement for the hospital was the inclusion of both a bathtub and an indoor latrine, features considered advanced for many frontier buildings at the time. These additions reflected growing awareness about sanitation and disease prevention within military facilities.

Nearby, a hillside graveyard overlooks the fort grounds. The cemetery serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers soldiers and civilians faced while living on the plains. Disease, accidents, and conflict claimed lives long before modern healthcare and transportation reached this isolated region.

Seeing the graveyard during Memorial Day weekend added an especially reflective atmosphere to our visit.

When the Frontier No Longer Needed the Fort

The importance of frontier forts began fading as railroads expanded westward during the late 1800s. Freight traffic shifted away from wagon routes, reducing the strategic importance of military protection along the Santa Fe Trail.

The Army officially abandoned the fort in 1878. Without the steady movement of wagon trains crossing the prairie, the post no longer served the same military purpose it once had. Many western forts disappeared entirely after closure, either dismantled for materials or slowly lost to time.

For a time, the land was part of a ranch. Fortunately, the durable sandstone structures were cared for long enough for preservation efforts to begin decades later. That survival allows visitors today to experience one of the clearest remaining examples of frontier military life in the American West.

Names Left Behind in Stone

As we explored the buildings, we noticed countless names scratched into the sandstone walls. Some dated back generations, left behind by visitors who wanted to mark their connection to the site.

These carvings create an unusual tension between preservation and human curiosity. While modern visitors understand the importance of protecting historic spaces, many earlier travelers viewed these walls as a place to leave a personal mark.

When it was a ranch, visitors were encouraged to leave their mark as a form of guest registration. Today, visitors can tour furnished buildings, watch demonstrations, and learn through exhibits that explain the fort’s complicated history. Rangers and volunteers help transform the grounds into a much more immersive experience than a typical museum stop.

Compared to some reconstructed sites, the authenticity here feels especially striking because so many original structures remain intact. That preservation gives visitors a rare opportunity to experience the scale and atmosphere of a real frontier military post rather than a modern recreation.

We first learned about the creative world of reclaimed art giants while reading stories about Thomas Dambo. He has a mission to turn found materials into colossal woodland characters. His idea of transforming forgotten wood into gentle giants, like Jakob Two Trees, captured our imaginations right away. We felt drawn to the way his work blends nature, storytelling, and childhood wonder into something that feels both timeless and fresh. We knew that we wanted to be part of a real-life Thomas Dambo troll adventure.

Each troll feels like it stepped straight out of a hidden folktale that was waiting for someone to discover it. These wooden guardians spark the kind of excitement that makes you slow down, look closely, and reconnect with your childhood curiosity. They feel like living storytellers, even though they never say a word. With every photograph and travel tale we found online, our desire to meet more trolls in person grew like roots twisting deeper into mossy earth.

Our visit to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo felt more like an animal adventure than a typical zoo trip. Tucked into the slopes above Colorado Springs, this mountaintop menagerie makes it easy to connect with wildlife in ways you don’t often find. We were face-to-face with so many creatures—without glass or distance between us—that it felt like stepping into their world. Known as the highest zoo in the U.S. at over 6,700 feet in elevation, it’s built for immersive experiences. This isn’t just a place to view animals—it’s a place to meet them. Founded in 1926 by philanthropist Spencer Penrose, the zoo continues to evolve while staying committed to conservation and hands-on learning. Each encounter felt like a personal invitation into the animals’ daily routines. It was the kind of up-close connection that stays with you long after you’ve returned to the flatlands.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Views

It’s not just the animals that make the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo unforgettable—the landscape plays a major role. Instead of watching from a distance, you become part of the story. The animals here are comfortable and cared for, and just as eager to meet you as you are to meet them.

Giraffe Feeding

One of the zoo’s most iconic attractions is its giraffe feeding deck, and it lived up to the hype. It made us reflect on the sense of togetherness that must have existed in these shared spaces, with each family contributing to the group’s survival and prosperity.

The Kiva and Its Ceremonial Significance

An impressive feature of the cliff dwellings is the Kiva—a circular, subterranean structure used for ceremonies and rituals. The Kiva holds deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Ancestral Puebloans, and its design speaks to their sophisticated understanding of architecture and community. Our adventure began at the Cog Station, where we marveled at the sleek, new railcars that replaced the aging fleet we had experienced years before. The Pikes Peak Highway allows visitors to drive up the mountain, offering flexibility and stunning overlooks along the way. A Scenic Journey Upward

As our train climbed, the landscape transformed from dense forests of pine and aspen to vast alpine tundra. Along the way, we spotted a group of bighorn sheep, a thrilling sight for wildlife enthusiasts. At one point, our train passed another cog heading downhill, showcasing the remarkable engineering that allows these trains to scale steep inclines. Every turn of the track revealed panoramic views that stretched for miles, making the journey just as exciting as the destination.

Upon arrival at the summit, we spotted the newly renovated Summit Visitors Center. This state-of-the-art facility provides a wealth of information about the history and geology of Pike’s Peak. Whether warming up inside or venturing out onto the viewing platforms, every angle provided a picture-perfect moment.

6 Unique U.S. Hiking Destinations with Breathtaking Landscapes

Exploring unique U.S. hiking destinations has become a passion of ours. As beginner-level hikers, we seek trails that offer stunning scenery without requiring expert-level skills. The diverse terrains and breathtaking vistas across the country provide endless opportunities for adventure. We’ve found several hikes that are manageable for most people. Here are six remarkable hiking spots that left an indelible mark on our journeys.

1. Colorado National Monument

Nestled near Grand Junction, the Colorado National Monument boasts a landscape of towering monoliths and deep canyons. We visited just after sunrise, with the barren landscape lighting up before our eyes. We entered the park from the western end, following the historic Rimrock Drive. This scenic 23-mile road follows the canyon’s curves and includes overlooks and tunnels. Our first stop was the Saddlehorn Visitor Center. Behind the center, we found a path leading to the Window Rock Nature Trail. This short trail leads along the cliff edge, offering our first views of Monument Canyon.

Otto’s Trail is just a short drive to the east and leads to views on the opposite side of the Rock Nature Trail. This trail is an out-and-back with little elevation change. Many of the pull offs provide excellent views from the roadside, while others require short hikes. Some are just paths, while others, like Coke Ovens Overlook, have rock stairs leading to a viewing platform. We noticed multiple trails leading down into the canyon but decided they should be left to hikers with more experience.

2. Garden of the Gods

Located in Colorado Springs, Garden of the Gods is a testament to nature’s artistry. The park’s dramatic red rock formations rise strikingly against the backdrop of Pikes Peak. The towering sandstone structures each have their unique shape and history. A variety of paved paths make this park accessible, allowing a wide range of visitors a chance to experience nature’s beauty. Benches are scattered along the trails, allowing a place to rest and reflect.

During our visit, we encountered a group of climbers scaling the rocks. Their determination and skill were inspiring, and it was fascinating to watch them navigate the ancient formations. The diverse plant and wildlife make this park one of our favorite unique U.S. hiking destinations. It feels like every turn revealed a new marvel, making it a place we’ve visited on numerous occasions.

3. The Flatirons in Boulder

The Flatirons, iconic slanted rock formations near Boulder, Colorado, offer hikers a blend of challenging trails and rewarding vistas. We embarked on the Chautauqua Trailhead, which provided direct access to these impressive sandstone slabs. The ascent was invigorating, with the trail leading up from the city’s edge. The unique rock formations are nestled in the ponderosa pine forests, just beyond the open meadows. Each step was bringing us closer to the towering rocks.

We followed the Chautauqua Trail until it reached a split. Here we found ourselves facing an important decision. We could continue along the Flatirons Loop, which looked to have some serious elevation change. Our second option was to follow the Bluebell-Baird Trail, which turned back toward town. Our lungs and legs told us that the second option was the wise choice. As we cleared the pines, we were greeted with panoramic views of Boulder and the distant plains. Insider tip: Do the hike in the morning and then spend your afternoon exploring Pearl Street in Boulder.

4. Arches National Park

Arches National Park is home to over 2,000 natural stone arches in southeastern Utah. We had seen many other people’s photos and knew we needed to visit. Knowing it would be crowded, we started early. Arriving before sunrise, we headed for the Windows Trail. A short 3-minute hike led to North Window Arch, which offers an elevated view to the east. We sat in silence as we viewed the canvas of stars. Gradually, these faded as the arch became bathed in the early morning sunshine. It was a humbling reminder of nature’s vastness and our fleeting presence within it.

Our day was filled with various hikes, all of which we would rate as easy to moderate. Many of the most famous features were visible from the vehicle, which made it easy to find the trailheads. As the day progressed, the trails filled with visitors. The wildlife we spotted in the morning soon disappeared, but occasionally, we would spot a mule deer. While the arches are most talked about, other notable park features exist. Insider tip: Be sure to save time to visit Park Avenue, a corridor flanked by towering rock walls and spires. A long staircase leads to some impressive views.

5. Palo Duro Canyon

Did you realize that the second-largest canyon in the U.S. is in Texas? This unique U.S. hiking destination is referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Texas”. Palo Duro Canyon offers a unique blend of rugged beauty and rich history. Hiking in this park, we were surrounded by multicolored layers of rock, each telling a story of the erosive power of wind and water over millennia. We began our visit at The Canyon Gallery & Visitor Center. This native stone structure was built in 1933 and is a good spot to get your bearing before heading down to the floor of the canyon.

Palo Duro Canyon is filled with hoodoos and caves. While many of the trails are fairly flat, we often found ourselves scrambling over loose rocks. One of the most memorable hikes was a short trail that led to The Big Cave. It required traversing a hillside filled with boulders, which makes this a moderate hike. As we rested in the shadow of the cave entrance, the vastness of the canyon stretched out before us, its walls painted in hues of red, orange, and yellow. Insider tip: Make a day of it and stay to enjoy the Texas Outdoor Musical. It’s Texas-sized entertainment with the canyon as a backdrop.

6. Devils Tower

Rising abruptly from the plains of northeastern Wyoming, Devils Tower is a geological wonder and a sacred site for many Native American tribes. This unique U.S. hiking destination has captured the attention and imagination of visitors for centuries. If you plan your visit between Memorial and Labor Day, be prepared for a crowd. The park sees about 500,000 visitors annually, and 80% of them occur during summer. The nearby Sturgis Rally occurs the first week of August, which boosts attendance even further.

The Tower Trail encircles the base, offering close-up views of its unique columnar formations. While the trail is paved, we still found plenty of elevation change. Walking this path, we were struck by the sheer verticality of the monolith, its surface etched with parallel cracks that have intrigued climbers and geologists alike. During our hike, we noticed prayer cloths and bundles tied to trees, honoring the site’s cultural significance. Respecting these traditions, we moved quietly, feeling a deep sense of reverence. The surrounding ponderosa pine forest and the distant Black Hills provided a serene backdrop, making our visit a natural and spiritual journey.

Experience Broadmoor Seven Falls

Being flatlanders, the raw beauty of the mountains always captivates us. Colorado Springs sits on the eastern edge of the peaks. On a previous visit, we discovered that there were too many sites for us to see in one trip. It took a few years, but we finally made our way back for more exploring. On this trip, we were looking for some challenges. That’s not hard when you find yourself at 6800 feet elevation. Fortunately, we had already been in the region for a couple of days. Having acclimated, we were ready to experience Broadmoor Seven Falls firsthand.

It Starts with a Hike

Sunny skies and moderate temperatures made the perfect setting for a new adventure. Access to experience Seven Falls starts at their offsite lot, which is located at 1045 Lower Gold Camp Rd. We made our way to the parking lot, where a shuttle would take us four miles to the park entrance. The shuttle is free, but tickets to the park were $18.00 each. It was one of the few times we have had to pay to see waterfalls, but the intrigue created a need to see this place for ourselves. After securing our tickets, we headed into the park. The first part of the visit includes a hike that’s just under a mile in one direction. The path slowly gains altitude, but nothing like the hikes we found in Arches National Park. There is a tram service, which costs a couple of bucks but we opted to give our legs some exercise. Hopefully, we wouldn’t regret the choice.

Counting the Falls

Before long, I found myself paying more attention to the people on the stairs. The stairs along the falls seemed to be wide enough for about 1 1/2 persons. A series of platforms allow for passing. Once on top, there are a couple of hiking trails, if the stairs didn’t wipe you out. Here’s where I made the decision not to undertake the 224 stairs that lead to the top of Seven Falls. Since hitting 60 years old, my body isn’t as accepting of stairs. We had hiked at The Flatirons, in Boulder, earlier in the week. While it was exhausting, it was also exhilarating. Now I was feeling the after effects of the climb, as parts of my body signaled their disapproval.

Experience Seven Falls

Back at the base of the falls, we found a couple of chairs that offer a firsthand view of Weimer Falls. The roaring of the falling water made conversation futile. Instead, we chose to just take in the raw beauty of nature. We relished the time we had to experience Seven Falls, but the reality of travel started to creep back in. With hunger gnawing at us, we knew it was time to start the hike back. My knees had forgiven me but I decided it would be prudent to just stroll. I think all attractions, that include elevation gain, should have the climb at the start of the visit. It was a pleasant downhill walk all the way back to the tram. Garden Of The Gods – Waiting On The Sun

All of the planning in the world won’t change the weather. When we arrived in Colorado Springs, we found ourselves under a heavy cloud deck. With a limited amount of time for exploring, we weren’t about to let it dampen our spirits. It had been quite a few years since our last visit and we had a long list of places to see and adventures to enjoy. This meant that we didn’t want to be waiting on the sun to brighten up our vacation. Time to make the most of what we had, so we made our way to our lodging before heading to the Garden of the Gods for some hiking.

Buffalo Bicycle Lodge

When selecting lodging, we have a lot of boxes to check. As I researched options, I spotted a locally-owned motor lodge that caters to cyclists. While we don’t do a lot of riding, we were intrigued by some of the daily options. The clouds followed us to our destination, but rain seemed to be holding off for now. We were hoping it would be overnight showers that left us free to roam during the day. Buffalo Bicycle Lodge is just a few blocks from the Garden of the Gods Park entrance. What a perfect home base for exploring this region. They even offer loaner bikes for those who want to do some pedal-based exploring.

America's Mountain

After a refreshing dinner at a nearby restaurant, we decided to do a little reconnaissance in the park. The park is designated a National Natural Landmark. I wasn’t able to uncover what the Native tribes named this place, but the early Europeans called it Red Rock Corral. In 1859, a couple of surveyors were exploring the site and one of them decided it would make a good beer garden. The other stated that it was a space fit for the gods to assemble. During this quick visit, we made a couple of stops to take in the majesty. It seemed like we were always in the presence of Pikes Peak, which sits about 10 miles away. Since the rain was still waiting, we even found time to scramble among some of the more popular outcroppings.

The next morning we found the sun had returned. Our first stop was at the lodge for breakfast. With a day of hiking and scrambling ahead of us, we fueled up with plenty of protein. Buffalo Bicycle Lodge includes breakfast in their room rates, so it makes the price even more appealing. They also have live entertainment on weekends, so we were excited to check it out later in the week. With our bellies full, as well as our coffee mugs, we headed back into the park for more adventure.

The Sun Breaks Out

Since Garden of the Gods is a free attraction, we knew we would use it as a filler if we had free time open up during our stay in Colorado Springs. We started with a visit to the Visitors Center. Here we found trail maps, food and beverages, souvenirs, and bathrooms. It’s a good place to take a break from hiking and grab an ice cream cone. (Yeah, we did that!) Heading into the park, we soon found a parking lot that led to a series of trails. Time to grab our backpack and head out on foot. As we made our way along some paved paths, we spotted a climber on one of the rock features.

A small crowd had assembled to watch the progress. He slowly made his way to the top and we wondered how he would get down. Before he could even begin, another climber appeared. It quickly became apparent that the first climber was setting the path upward. We paused for a moment longer before finally heading back down the trail. There was a lot of the park to explore and daylight was burning. The majority of the roads are one-way, so we found ourselves doubling back at times. No problem there, as it gave us another view of the amazing landscape.

Waiting On The Sun

Scrambling among the red rocks reminded us of our visit to Arches National Park (Read about that trip here). The Garden of the Gods has a lot of accessible spaces, so it is truly user friendly. The sunshine quickly escalated the temperatures, so we curtailed our hiking by lunchtime. We knew that there would be more chances in the evenings and early mornings. 4 Things Not To Miss At The Airplane Restaurant

When was your last in-flight meal? It seems like we are barely offered peanuts and a drink on current commercial trips. The glory days of commercial flight seem to have passed but we found a way to recreate the experience on a new level. During a visit to Colorado Springs, we found 4 things not to miss at The Airplane Restaurant. The name of this eatery piqued our interest, so we dropped in to learn more about this dining destination. Approaching the Boeing KC-97 Tanker, we were fascinated by the way it dominated the landscape.

1) Seating Options

The Airplane Restaurant is a 275-seat restaurant but only 42 passengers can occupy the actual plane. This leaves plenty of space for the ground lovers. Looking around this space, we found that there was plenty of interesting memorabilia to take in. The décor lifted our spirits to new heights, as we took in the various aircrafts suspended from the ceiling. We also noticed an assortment of aviation artifacts that detail add interest to the rooms.

2) Prepare For Takeoff

Since our visit landed between lunch and dinner times, we found the crowds small. When the hostess gave us a choice of seating, we quickly jumped onboard with dining off the ground. We followed her up the stairs and into the aircraft. Being a workhorse vehicle, it has limited window seats, but we were able to snag one. During our meal, I was able to imagine ourselves cruising high above the land. Of course, being grounded in Colorado offered a quieter meal.

3) Visit the Cockpit

After placing our meal order, I headed off with camera in hand to do a little exploring. This airplane served much of its life as a refueling asset for the U.S. Air Force. Built in 1953, it was equipped with 4 engines, each offering 3500 horsepower. The 97s were considered the first long-range transport and this version was the second largest produced in the United States. I made my way to the cockpit, which still retains its controls and gauges. Here was another opportunity to let my imagination run, as I sailed through the clouds on my way across the Atlantic Ocean. Reality pulled me back and I returned to our table in time for our meals to arrive.

4) Sample the Flavors

The last in-flight meals I remember happened well before we entered the 21st Century. Most of these were eaten out of necessity, as they lacked any culinary exuberance. I was confident that one of the 4 things at The Airplane Restaurant was a higher regard for freshness and flavor. After being pulled away from my imaginary ocean crossing, I was in the mood for Fish & Chips. The menu hinted of a delightful beer batter, so it made my decision easy. I opted to swap out the standard French Fries for some crispy Onion Rings. Crystal chose the Guacamole Chicken Sandwich. This classic is constructed with a grilled chicken breast, a hearty helping of Guacamole, Swiss cheese, and red onion. Crystal substituted the Sweet Potato Fries for her side dish.

4 Things Not to Miss at The Airplane Restaurant

While we dined, our discussion revolved around this unique setting. We checked off all of the boxes that this place offers. Unusual dining setting: check; delectable dishes: check; interactive opportunities: check. We settled our bill and asked our server for a favor. She was more than happy to follow us to the cockpit for selfie time. Since I had already crossed the Atlantic, I let Crystal take the pilot’s seat for this round. After a few poses, it was time to put our feet back on the ground and head off for more Colorado adventures.
