Some places become famous for their scenery, others for their history. Winslow, Arizona, earned its place in American pop culture thanks to a few memorable words in a classic rock song. Standin’ on the Corner Park sits along Route 66 and celebrates a musical moment. It still draws crowds of travelers decades after the song first hit the airwaves.

When the Eagles released “Take It Easy” in 1972, few could have imagined how much attention it would eventually bring to this small Arizona community. Written by Jackson Browne and Glenn Frey, the song became the band’s first single and introduced generations of listeners to a certain corner in Winslow. Crystal and I were in school when we heard it, but the song has stayed with us over the decades.

For Route 66 travelers like us, visiting the corner is one of those experiences that seems almost too simple to explain. After all, we’re talking about standing on a sidewalk in the middle of town!
Yet that’s exactly what makes it special. It’s a chance to step into a familiar piece of American music history while exploring another chapter of the Mother Road.

When Route 66 Ran Through Winslow

Long before the Eagles put Winslow into their song, the town had already established itself as an important stop in northern Arizona. The railroad helped shape its early development, but the arrival of U.S. Route 66 in 1926 brought a new generation of travelers directly through downtown.

During the highway’s heyday, motorists passed through Winslow on journeys across the American West. Gas stations, restaurants, motels, and other businesses benefited from the steady stream of vehicles. For many families, these roadside communities became just as memorable as the destinations they were traveling toward.

A serious challenge arose when Interstate 40 bypassed downtown Winslow in the late 1970s. Like many Route 66 communities, Winslow watched passing traffic move to the faster highway. Businesses that once depended on those travelers struggled, and parts of downtown experienced years of decline. Fortunately, the community wasn’t ready to surrender its place in roadside history.

During the 1990s, local volunteers recognized the opportunity created by the town’s musical fame. In 1997, a committee began developing what would become Standin’ on the Corner Park. The attraction was dedicated in September 1999, giving travelers a reason to leave the interstate and rediscover downtown Winslow. It’s a creative way to connect the town’s past with its future, using something as simple as a song to help bring people back.

Everyone Wants Their Moment on the Corner

One little detail about visiting the famous corner you should know. You probably won’t be the only people hoping to have your photograph taken!

When we arrived, we discovered that getting our turn meant having a little patience. Other visitors were also lining up for their photographs. We all enjoyed the chance to capture our own version of the familiar scene. Fortunately, we found everyone friendly and willing to help one another.

People were happy to take pictures for other travelers, making it easier for couples and groups to get everyone into the same photograph. Rather than feeling like a competition for the perfect spot, the experience became a shared moment among people who had all made the same memorable stop. There’s something strangely amusing about people traveling across the country (or the world) to stand on a street corner. Yet here we were, doing exactly that!

We appreciated how the atmosphere reflected the spirit of Route 66 travel. Sometimes the best memories come from brief connections with strangers experiencing the same place. A little patience certainly helps, but the friendly visitors made waiting our turn part of the fun.

The Statues, Murals, and Musical Details

While the opportunity to stand on the corner brings many visitors to Winslow, the surrounding artwork deserves more than a passing glance. The statues and murals help transform an ordinary intersection into a celebration of American music.

One of the park’s original features is a life-sized bronze figure of a guitar-carrying character that represents a wandering musician from the era of the song. Although visitors sometimes identify him as Jackson Browne or Glenn Frey, he was intended as a more general representation of a traveling troubadour.

Behind the statue, we spotted a two-story mural. The mural includes the famous girl and flatbed Ford, while a real flatbed truck adds another dimension to the scene. Following Glenn Frey’s death in 2016, a second bronze statue honoring the Eagles musician was unveiled that September.

Perhaps the most entertaining detail is how thoroughly the park embraces its musical inspiration. The original planning committee established a simple rule: everything included in the park needed to relate to “Take It Easy.” Look closely, and you’ll discover several references. The guitar-carrying musician, the girl and truck, and an eagle in the mural connect to the song and band. We’re not sure how many song references are in the park, but looking for them adds another layer of enjoyment to Standin’ on the Corner Park.

A Route 66 Stop Worth Making

Eventually, our turn came, and we jumped at the chance to stand together on the famous corner. Looking back, we appreciate how something so uncomplicated can become a memorable part of a much larger road trip.

For anyone planning a journey along historic Route 66, Standin’ on the Corner Park makes an enjoyable addition to the itinerary. Located at Second Street and Kinsley Avenue in downtown Winslow, it’s easy to find while exploring the old highway.

We suggest allowing a little flexibility in your visit. You may need to wait for your turn, especially when other travelers are enjoying the attraction. Use that time to examine the statues, study the mural, and search for the clever references to the song.
And while you’re downtown, consider spending a little time exploring the surrounding businesses and other reminders of Winslow’s Route 66 heritage.

After all, the best roadside stops aren’t always the biggest attractions. Sometimes they’re simply places that give us a good story, a shared memory, and another reason to appreciate the journey.
