We have come to love our visits to the Seattle area. While our primary goal is seeing our son, we also find that this region offers tons of unique sights. It was decided that each journey should bring us some discoveries. For this trip, we chose an Oregon Coast road trip as our direction home.

There is something about the Pacific Northwest that encourages you to linger. The landscape is filled with stories, and the roads seem to curve with purpose. We pointed the car south, crossed into Oregon, and decided that wherever the day took us would be exactly where we were meant to land.

In Astoria, we joined up with the Oregon Coast Highway and knew this was no longer just a drive. It had become the beginning of something we would remember for a long time.

Standing Where the Journey Once Ended

The highway seemed to meander just out of view of the ocean, but periodically we would spot quick glimpses. Our first meaningful stop came in Seaside, a place where history feels close enough to touch. This stretch of coast marks the official end of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and knowing that added a layer of weight to our visit.

We had followed pieces of their story before, but standing here felt different. I found myself thinking about the sheer determination it must have taken to reach this point.

The ocean rolled in with a steady rhythm, as if it had been waiting centuries for us to notice. It made our own journey feel small in comparison, yet somehow more meaningful. This was not just another stop. It was a reminder that every road has a story.

A Midday Break Worth Savoring

By the time lunch rolled around, the coastal air had done its job and worked up our appetite. We found ourselves at Crabby Oyster, a place that felt perfectly in step with the day.

I went straight for the fish and chips, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, the kind of meal that tastes even better along the coast. Crystal chose the Surf City burger, stacked high with avocado and that unmistakable richness of Tillamook cheese. We shared each other’s fries and onion rings and savored our Seaside meal.

We sat there a little longer than planned, not in a rush to leave. Meals like this have a way of slowing time, and for a moment, the road ahead did not matter as much as the one we were already on. We spent time exploring the local boutique shops before finally piling back into the car.

Chasing the Coastline South

The Oregon Coast road trip continued to unfold in ways we could not have planned. The highway curved inland, leaving us wondering when we would catch glimpses of waves crashing against rugged cliffs.

Then came Cannon Beach.

We had seen photos of Haystack Rock during our research, but nothing could have prepared us for seeing it in person. Rising from the sea, it felt almost surreal, like something placed there on purpose to make you pause. The surrounding rock formations added to the scene, each one shaped by time and tide.

We wandered closer to the water, drawn in by the scale of it all. As we took in the full view, we knew this would be one of those images we would carry with us long after the trip ended.

A Seaside Stay at Rockaway Beach

We had reached the stretch of Oregon Coast Highway that kept the sea almost constantly in view. By now it was late afternoon, so we continued to Rockaway Beach, ready to settle in for the night. The Tradewinds Motel greeted us with exactly what we had hoped for, a beachfront room where the ocean was just steps away.

There was a lighthearted charm to the place, especially with the seagulls claiming the property as their own. They strutted around like they had reservations, keeping a close eye on everything happening nearby.

We dropped our bags and opened the door to let the sound of the waves fill the room. It was simple, comfortable, and exactly what we needed after a day of driving and exploring. With the beach calling our names, we hurried to greet it.

We had quietly hoped for a good sunset, but what we got exceeded anything we imagined. The sky began to shift in soft layers of orange and pink, reflecting off the water in a way that felt almost unreal.

We walked along the beach, side by side, not saying much. Moments like this do not need words. The cool breeze, the steady rhythm of the waves, and the fading light created a kind of calm that is hard to describe.

This part of the Oregon Coast road trip felt like a reward. Not for the miles we had driven, but for choosing to take the journey in the first place.

As we settled in for the night, we found the sound of the ocean waves lulling us to sleep. What began as a simple travel decision had turned into something far more memorable.

From the history in Seaside to the flavors of lunch, from the towering presence of Haystack Rock to the quiet beauty of a Rockaway Beach sunset, each moment added its own layer to the story.
