For many years, we have enjoyed visits to the Ozark Mountains. This ancient mountain range offers amazing scenery, abundant wildlife, and many hidden wonders. During a trip to Top of the Rock, we learned about another scenic site that we wanted to see firsthand. A little research uncovered 10,000 acres of exploring that offers visitors plenty of natural experiences. Since we had planned a Branson trip, it made sense to add a stop at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park to our itinerary.

Miles of Nature

Dogwood Canyon is a little over 30 minutes southwest of Branson, Missouri. That makes it an easy day trip for those staying at one of the nearby resorts. Upon arriving, we found that the 10,000-acre park has tons of available parking. Our plan was to spend an extended amount of time at the park so that we could really explore. Single-day tickets are $15 per adult, and we decided to add bike rentals, which was an additional $15 each. At admissions, guests are supplied with color-coded wristbands that help staff recognize what you have purchased.

Getting Around Dogwood Canyon

They offer a variety of bike options, including plenty for the little tikes. The wide paths are designed to handle the combination of biker and hiker traffic. During our visit, it was a well-balanced split between walkers and riders. Little Indian Creek winds through the park and guests will cross the water multiple times during their trip. They also have trams running that utilize their own pathway, but there are spots where the paths combine and cross.

Bridging the Gap

We found that Dogwood Canyon has a very relaxed atmosphere. With so much to see, we often found ourselves pulling over to take it in. This covered bridge is designed for foot traffic, so bikers have to dismount and push their cycles to the other side. Along the way, we noticed that the tram path cut through the creek. When one of the trams passed by, it kicked up a nice splash that was entertaining for riders and viewers alike.

Bluff-side Views

The fact that this park is built inside of a canyon makes it easy to find amazing views. Besides the over 6 miles of paved paths, there are another 9 miles of hiking paths. This lets visitors design their own unique visit. A few spots allow guests to get up-close views and even some elevated perspectives of the park. Tons of shade trees are the perfect place to take a break from your hike and just enjoy the scenery.

Going to the Chapel

Most of the sights at Dogwood Canyon are focused on nature. We did find this cute little chapel just a short way down the path. A short break from our bikes was needed to check out the interior. The architect who designed this space was able to add another level of awesome by framing a nearby waterfall in the view you have down the main aisle. We paused for a few minutes to take in the sheer beauty of this place, before heading back to the main trail.

Scenic Break

At the far end of Dogwood Canyon, guests will actually cross into Arkansas. A roundabout signals time to head back to the start. Before we began that leg of our journey, we decided to rest up at Wish Bowl Falls. It is a good place to enjoy some serenity, even if there are others around. A couple of nearby picnic tables offer space for groups to have a makeshift picnic.

Fish Frenzy

The reflecting pool, at Wish Bowl Falls, is filled with trout. This seemed to be quite entertaining for everyone we saw visiting the area. Nearby fish food vending machines allow guests a chance to get a closer look at the fish. I went as far as submerging our GoPro for a close-up look at the school in action. Be aware that the video is actually upside-down, but I really liked the effect. I hope you enjoy it, as well.

10,000 Acres of Exploring

It always surprises us that no matter how hard we scan the landscape, there are lots of sights we miss. Dogwood Canyon Nature Park helped us remedy our usual oversight since we had to return by the same path. On this portion of the excursion, we were able to spot some of the finer details in the park.

Dogwood Canyon Chuckwagon Dining

During the first half of our journey, we had spotted an area that featured a chuckwagon-style dining option. It was a little crowded at that point, so we decided to check it out on the return trip. After checking out the menu, we went in search of a table. Sure enough, the crowds had dispersed and we easily found seating that allowed appropriate social distancing space.

Lunch Break

We knew that we would be dining at least once during our visit, so we had scoped out the various opportunities present at Dogwood Canyon. Near the entrance, there is a sit-down restaurant that features views of a 120-foot waterfall. There is also the option of dining on a nearby outdoor patio, but both of these spots had looked to be fairly popular. This chuckwagon picnic version was perfect for our pace that day. The menu is limited to most items that are easy to eat, which is exactly what we were wanting.

Indoor Exploring

Once we completed our circuit, we returned our bikes to the shop. Now it was time to do a little exploring in the main buildings near the entrance. As you are approaching the park, the Dogwood Mill captures your attention. On the outside, a 25-foot wheel spins from the force of the passing creek. Inside the gristmill, there are a variety of exhibits showcasing the heritage of the native Osage tribes that occupied these lands.

Masking Up at Dogwood Canyon

Moving indoors meant that we needed to mask up. There are spots on the outside where masks were needed, but we found plenty of space to distance ourselves during our bike ride. After exploring the displays we popped out on a patio for a view of the park. Across the way, we spotted a large treehouse that begged to be explored.

Animal Insights

Heading across the way, we found that the treehouse was closed due to the pandemic. While we were a little bummed out about it, we knew that it would be hard to keep the spaces sanitized with roving bands of kids. We settled for a visit to the Conservation Center, which is accessible by a swinging bridge. Inside there are representatives of the animals that currently and previously inhabited this region. We made our way through the building and down some stairs. It deposited us in the gift shop, where we selected a couple of mementos to remember our visit.

Dogwood Canyon Nature Park

By the time we made our way back to our car, we had spent about 5 hours at Dogwood Canyon Nature Park. The spaces and exhibits were able to keep us engaged the entire time. We would imagine that it might be the same for others. It would be reasonable to add another hour to our time, but that would probably be the maximum for us. Of course, by riding bikes instead of walking, we shaved off significant time on our journey. You may want to keep that in mind when planning your own visit to the park.

One of the top destinations in the Midwest is Branson, Missouri. Like many, we have made multiple trips to this Ozark location, but this was our first visit during the Christmas season. A winning bid at a fundraiser silent auction had secured us tickets to Silver Dollar City, and Crystal had been wanting to see the holiday magic for many years. It looked obvious that 2017 would be the year she got her wish.

The Branson Hotel

Once we determined our destination, it was time to work on the rest of the trip details. Branson has no lack of lodging options, but we were looking for something special. After a little research, the perfect choice came to light. The Branson Hotel is an adults only historic hotel that has only nine rooms. Each of the theme decorated rooms offer a special experience for guests. We quickly learned that our choice was perfect for our short getaway. The wonderful staff and delightful treatment that we received made our stay extra special. (Read more details about the Branson Hotel here>)

Branson Landing

Our hotel choice put us a few short blocks from the Branson Landing, which is located on the edge of Lake Taneycomo. Our arrival had been early enough for us to enjoy some time exploring this outdoor venue. We watched one of the Water & Fire shows that play each hour by the shore. There is a posted schedule that lists which songs will accompany the shows. Afterwards, we visited a few shops, and even made a stop in Smith Creek Moonshine for a taste test. (You can read more about Smith Creek here>)

White River Fish House

Our lunch appointment was at the White River Fish House. This Bass Pro Shop owned property offers some down home quality dishes served up with fashion. This all takes place inside a building that is reminiscent of an old fishing lodge. It ranked as one of the most memorable meals of our trip. (Read more about the Fish House here>) To help work off some of our delicious, yet filling lunch, we returned to shopping. After seeing the shops of the Branson Landing, we worked our way back up Main Street to our hotel.

Dixie Stampede

We found ourselves with some free time, before our evening appointment. It had been a while since our last visit to Branson, so we decided to cruise the strip, and see what had changed. While a few places change hands, for the most part everything was quite familiar. One place that seems to be a constant landmark is the Dixie Stampede. We have driven past this stately complex many times, but had never visited. This year we decided we would remedy this oversight. Their seasonal Christmas show was just the ticket to help get us in the mood for our main event the next day. An evening filled with food, music, and action was in store for us, and made us wonder why we hadn’t done this sooner. (Read more about Dixie Stampede here>)

A good night’s sleep, and a delicious breakfast prepared us for a long day of exploring. Our second day was completely dedicated to our Silver Dollar City visit. Of course, we had some time to kill before it opened, so we spent some more time exploring the strip. We try to find a small momento, from each city we visit, for a board we keep in our office. After a few stops, we found just what we were looking for, and decided it was time to head to the park.

Silver Dollar City

We have seen many of our friends post pictures from their visits to Silver Dollar City during the Old Time Christmas Festival. With no kids in our group, we could build an itinerary that revolved around just the things we wanted to do. For us, this visit would be about the Christmas decorations. Sure, we would do some shopping, catch a show or two, and maybe even ride a couple of rides. Still we knew that once the sun set, it would all be about seeing what 6.5 million lights looked like in person. Let’s just say that there are no pictures that do the experience justice. We still tried to express it, as well as we could. (Read more about Silver Dollar City here>)

Top of the Rock

There was one stop that we made earlier in the year, but decided to add to this group. Top of the Rock is located just south of Branson, and is a common side trip for those vacationing in the area. Others stay at this luxury resort, and travel into Branson for the shows, restaurants, and attractions. This scenic destination sits high on a ridge over Table Rock Lake, and offers unbelievable views of the valleys below. The complex has restaurants, a nature trail, history museum, and even a golf course designed by famous PGA golfers. It was certainly more than we expected to find, even after seeing the many posts by our readers. (You can read more about Top of the Rock here>)

Thanks For The Suggestions

Through our first year of research trips for the blog, we have learned many new things. Most valuable of all is the knowledge that our readers are an important resource for information. While we don’t have time to visit every place that you suggest, we try to at least research each one we see mentioned. When possible, we add these to our itineraries. This has worked out well, and led us to some unique stops that we would surely have overlooked. Thanks again to each and every one of you, and keep the suggestions coming. We love all of the feedback.

We were made aware of it by one of our Kansas City readers, and loved the pictures they shared from their visit. Although we wanted this article for our Branson series, we actually visited on our way home from Eureka Springs. (Better weather for outdoor activities.)

A Johnny Morris Production

Top of the Rock is a combination resort, golf course, museum, and nature trail. It was designed on the top of a ridge, with a view of Table Rock Lake. The idea was to create a destination where guests could stay, and find plenty to do for a couple of days. Using the natural landscape, they augmented it with some seamless additions, and pumped water up the ridge to create the many waterfalls that dot the landscape.

Heading Out

Our first stop was at the entrance center, where we purchased our $32.00 per person dual pass for the nature trail and museum. Please note that the Lost Canyon Cave and Nature Trail is enjoyed by golf cart, so you will need a person 18 or older to drive. With passes in hand, we made our way to the carts, and soon we were on our way. The carts are available for two or four passengers, and include roof shades. There are pull-offs along the 2 1/2 mile trek, and they frown on you stopping in a way that blocks traffic.

Amish Bridges

Along the way, we passed over two Amish covered bridges. These offer fabulous views of the valley below, as well as the waterfalls cascading down the cliffs. Since they are only one lane wide, they obviously don’t have pull-offs for photo opps.

Bat Bar

As we were making our way around the nature trail, we came upon a cave entrance. This is clearly man-made, but offers an opportunity that was unexpected. Inside the cave is a drive-up bar, which serves a small selection of cold beverages for youngsters and adults. I’m used to having beverage carts bring drinks out on the golf course, but this was a little backwards. Still, we decided to sample one of their cold drinks, as we made our way back out into the sunlight. BTW – there is a waterfall inside the cave, and you will probably get a little mist from it.

Picture Perfect Landscape

As we continued through the landscape, we found many places that were excellent backdrops for selfies. The crews have done a great job at creating a path that showcases the natural beauty of the Ozarks. Since the pull-offs are numerous, every group can proceed at its own pace, but even us slowpokes finally made it back to the Welcome Center.

Once we had turned in our golf cart, we boarded a bus to take us over to the main complex. Here is where golfers come to try their skill at a par 3 course designed by Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tom Watson. The course offers amazing views of the surrounding countryside, as well as Table Rock Lake. Nearby, a chapel sits on the edge of the ridge offering beautiful lake views. It is home to many weddings, followed by receptions in one of the private rooms available for rent.

Grabbing A Bite

There are a few dining options available at Top of the Rock, and some have a hefty price tag. We hadn’t made reservations, so we chose to grab something at Arnie’s Barn, which is named for Arnold Palmer. It offers plenty of seating options, and even has an outdoor veranda with tables. The floor-to-ceiling windows offer magnificent views of the golf course, which is the direction I faced. Inside, the heavy wooden beams, and large stone fireplace offer a lodge feel to the place. We were surprised that it wasn’t louder, considering how open the room feels with the high vaulted ceiling. The story goes that the timbers for this lodge came from a 150 year old barn on Arnold Palmer’s property.

The menu is primarily focused on Mexican cuisine, which was perfect for our tastes that day. We each ordered the Taco Salads ($13.00 each), and munched on some chips and salsa while we waited. The meal was good, and we enjoyed the views, as well as some prime people-watching, while we dined.

A Timeline Of The Land

Once we had satisfied our hunger, we were ready to continue our exploration. The dual pass we had purchased included admission to the Ancient Ozarks Natural History Museum. Upon entering, we quickly discovered that this museum runs in chronological order from prehistoric times. Visitors snake their way through the galleries, as they make their way toward modern times. First up was information on many of the creatures that roamed the lands centuries before man.

As we worked our way toward the present, we found a large collection of Native American artifacts. Much of the collection was unearthed by archaeologists hired to scour the lands that would be submerged when Table Rock Lake was formed. We never realized that this massive effort had been undertaken, and the extensive assortment proves the worth of the activity. They also display many pieces of art in various forms. Some of our favorites were the amazing bead-work that can be found in the clothing and everyday items used by various tribes.

Passing Through Time

We progressed through the museum, and found ourselves entering the pioneer days. Here were the pieces used by travelers to traverse the prairie, and ultimately bring them into the Ozark Mountain region. Many of the pieces in this area are items we have seen similar examples of in other history museums throughout the Midwest. The displays still captured our attention, and are well designed for all ages.

Toward the end, we found ourselves entering the Civil War period. The Missouri-Kansas-Arkansas-Oklahoma areas were ripe with battles and skirmishes. Many of the decisive struggles occurred in these area, so it is a fitting end to the museum’s exhibits. While battle pieces are prevalent in the displays, there is also an abundance of personal stories mixed in, which help bring the non-combatant view to the exhibits. Overall, we were impressed with the museum, and its wide array of exhibits. While the cost for the day ended up around $100 for two (including lunch), the place did occupy us for about five hours. Not a bad return on our money, in our opinion. Have you ever visited Top of the Rock? If so, be sure to give us your thoughts on the value of your visit? Thanks!

Our November trip to Branson, Missouri was filled with firsts for us. Among these, was our first experience at Dixie Stampede. Branson is home to a wide array of entertainment options, and many of these are evening shows. Dixie Stampede kicks it up a notch by adding dinner to the schedule, so that guests can watch a live show, while they dine. We had heard many of our friends descriptions of the experience, and were ready to see it for ourselves.

We want to thank Dixie Stampede for their hospitality. Rest assured that all opinions are our own.

Pre-Show Entertainment

We arrived a little before the pre show started, and found a spot in the over-sized parking lot. The size of it hinted at the number of guests that could be held inside. As we made our way toward the entrance, we passed by the stables. Here we were able to view some of the stars of the show, as they enjoyed a snack. Once we picked up our tickets, we made our way inside to the Carriage Room. Here guests are treated to a fantastic musical show by the White River Wranglers. This trio of brothers played a variety of Christmas songs familiar to most of the audience. It certainly made the wait more enjoyable, and had everybody toe tapping by the finish of their medley. They announced that it was time for us to make our way into the auditorium, and we went in to find our seats.

Pick A Side at Dixie Stampede

The auditorium is split between the North and South sides. During the regular season these represent the armies of the Civil War. Since our visit occurred during the holiday season, the sides were representing the North and South Poles. Our servers helped us find our sections, and once we were seated they took our drink orders. (Like many Branson locations, alcoholic beverages are not offered.) I didn’t take pictures of the meal, but it consisted of a four course meal. You are not given silverware, but our neighbors had clearly attended previously, and brought their own. The meal begins with a cup of creamy vegetable soup (absolutely delicious). Next came the main course, which featured a roasted Cornish game hen, Bbq pork loin filet, half cob of corn, half of a baked potato, and a biscuit. The final course was dessert, which consisted of an iced, fruit-filled popover. The meal was not gourmet fare, but was decent, and more than enough for all but the most ravenous appetites.

The Fanfare Begins

Not long after the main course was served, the lights were dimmed. The music rose, and the evening’s emcee rode out into the arena. He welcomed us all, and laid out the theme for the evening’s entertainment. Here is where we found out which pole we represented, and would cheer for during various events. (We were on the edge of the South Pole section.) The participants for the evening were made up of elves and riders for each side. A parade of contestants gave the audience a chance to be introduced to their champions for the evening, and cheers went up for each side. Two large doors at the back of the theater offered access for the entertainers to enter and exit the arena.

Something For Everyone

Throughout the evening, we were treated to a broad spectrum of entertainment options. A large stage was lowered from the ceiling, and we were thrilled to see an ice-skating couple onboard. As the music played, they danced around the ice for all to see. This unusual addition to the show was a nice treat, and was only the beginning of some interesting tidbits we would see.

Being a Christmas show, we expected some form of nativity to be presented. Once again, it originated from the stage that lowers from the ceiling. We found this to be an inventive way to introduce new characters and subjects to the crowd. For the nativity, the stage held the manger scene. The visitors to the stable filtered through the doors at the back of the arena. Shepherds tended their flocks, and the wise men, traveling by camel, made their way to the center of the arena. The entire presentation was well presented.

Livestock Galore

The evening’s entertainment, while varied, was still focused on the riders and their beautiful mounts. Various events took place through the evening, with a tally of winners being added up for each pole. The crowd cheered on its respective sides, and everyone enjoyed the fanfare. One of our favorite sections was the barrel races, with a trio of riders competing for each side. There was also lots of parading and high-stepping, which gave us a chance to see the horses we had met earlier in the evening in action. Even though I am certain that our side cheered just as loud, the North Pole ended up victorious.

Dixie Stampede is a family friendly attraction, so there we expected some kid themed events during the evening. Once again, the overhead stage lowered, and this time offered up a collection of toys. The Sugar Plum Fairy arrived, and brought them to life. Decorated with fluorescent colors, the black lights highlighted them for the entire crowd to watch. They even have a rider and mount perform in a similarly decorated outfit. (We had seen the horse in it’s outfit prior to the show)

You Know Who Arrives

It wouldn’t be a Christmas show without the arrival of Santa Claus. One of the final scenes for the evening was his arrival by sleigh. He was welcomed by cheers and excitement all around the audience. As he took laps around the arena, he waved back at the crowd, and offered his trademark Ho! Ho! Ho! As the show wound down, the house lights returned to normal, signifying the end to the show. The cast of riders, 32 horses, various livestock, and assorted special features made for an evening of fun entertainment. After our inaugural visit, we can understand why so many people make return trips to this attraction. How many of you have visited Dixie Stampede?

Our most recent visit to Branson, Missouri was scheduled to see some of the Christmas season attractions. After the four hour drive from Kansas City, we were ready for lunch at White River Fish House. First we stopped by our hotel to drop off our things, and park our car. It was nice staying in the downtown area, as it allowed us to be within walking distance of many shops and restaurants. Once we were settled, we took off for Branson Landing, which was only a couple of blocks from our lodging. (You can read about our lodging choice here>)
We want to thank the White River Fish House for their hospitality. Rest assured that all opinions are our own.

Riverfront Dining

The White River Fish House is actually an oversized barge that is tethered to the shore. It is designed to look like an old fishing lodge. Around the exterior is a walkway that widens in places for seating. It also features a pier for boaters to dock, while they stop in for refreshments. Once inside, the fishing theme continues throughout the interior. Assorted boats, including “johnboats” which may have originated in this area, are hung from the ceiling. At the far end is a large stone flanked fireplace with large windows on either side, which offer wonderful views of the water. The seating is an assortment of booths and tables with plenty of room for large parties. The feel is casual, as would be expected with a fishing lodge.

Sweet Beginnings

After being seated, we started our meal with some of their signature Jalapeno Cornbread. This sweet appetizer is served up in a cast iron skillet. The bread may have some bits of jalapeno incorporated, but it doesn’t pack any real heat. On the contrary, it is rather addicting, and I couldn’t stop eating it, even though I suspected the main dishes would be substantial.

White River Fish House Knows Fish

The menu at White River Fish House is not limited to seafood and freshwater fish. There are a handful of meat options, as well as burgers and sandwiches. Of course, we believe it is always best to stick to the specialties of the house, since they are the most practiced. Crystal chose the Maple Glazed Salmon, which is grilled and topped with a house-made pecan butter. For her sides, she decided on the green beans and sweet potato tater tots. Crystal will be the first to admit she is not a big fish lover, but the combination of the maple glaze and pecan butter made the dish quite appealing. To top it off, she loved the tater tots, which had a nice crispiness to the bite. (I might have tested one or two for the article.)

Delicious Sea Dwellers

I selected the Grouper with Crab-meat, and picked the green beans for my vegetable, as well. I chose the rice pilaf for my starch, which had a nice flavor of the portabella mushrooms that were incorporated in the dish. The fish filet was so delicate and tender that it almost melted in my mouth. The crab-meat topper added another layer of flavor, which really compliments the meal. We were both pleased with our choices, and enjoyed them to our fill. While the White River Fish House may be located within the area of an outdoor mall, the entire experience felt like we were dining out in the country. It certainly opened our eyes, and appetites to adding more fish restaurants to our future plans.

Silver Dollar City is a top attraction in the Midwest. Each year it draws throngs of visitors to the Ozarks, so they can experience a mix of old-time crafts and new-age rides. We, like many of you, have visited on multiple occasions, but we have never been to the Old Time Christmas Festival. Each Fall, the park is transformed, for the months of November and December, into a magical holiday experience. A purchase of tickets during a local fundraiser provided the perfect opportunity to finally see this extravaganza.

Getting an Early Start

Since we knew we would be experiencing a wide range of temperatures during our visit, we opted to prepay for Premium Parking ($13.00+tax). This allowed us to park within easy walking distance from the gates. It ended up being a bargain when compared to having to pay for a couple of lockers. (The lockers are limited in number, so a double good purchase.) We arrived just before opening, even though we had set out early. Be prepared for lines of traffic when you visit, as this is an extremely popular festival. Once we passed through security, we found ourselves deposited in the park. I am not one to leave too much up to chance, so I had pre-planned our day. The first part was still daylight hours, so the focus would be on riding anything that was appealing, as well as visiting the craftspeople. The park is laid out in a fairly circular fashion, so it’s not too difficult to see most everything in one pass. We decided to pass up a visit to Marvel Cave, since we have done that a couple of times in the past. We took a left, and headed toward the older section of the park. A stop in the Phoebe Snapp Taffy shop offered plenty of color and ambiance to set the tone for the day.

As we stepped outside, the delicious aroma of freshly baked cinnamon rolls found its way to our noses. Stepping inside of Sullivan’s Mill, we watched the staff working away on the next batch. The scent of the baking pastries was so good, and reminded us that we hadn’t eaten in a while. Watching for a restaurant would have to be added to our list.

We left the bakery, and outside found an assortment of buildings reminiscent to those that the settlers of the area may have constructed. A must see is the Wilderness Church, which offers some magnificent views of the surrounding hills. It is a peaceful place for a few moments of rest.

We started our way down the hillside, (Be prepared for plenty of climbing and descending in this park.) and ran across some crafts shops. Stepping inside the Mountain Leather Shop, we were immediately welcomed by the familiar smell of the tanned hides. With few expectations for finding items for our Christmas shopping list, we were able to focus on things for ourselves. While I saw a lot of neat things, nothing really jumped out at me to purchase. Perhaps if I was a cowboy on the range, I might find the need for a holster.

Sticking to the Indoor Rides

We continued our downhill decent, and began hearing screams in the distance. With temperatures hovering around 50 degrees, we couldn’t believe that so many people would challenge the wind chill created on the roller coasters. It became apparent that our assumptions were wrong. We agreed that our decision to stick to indoor rides was a wise choice. At the bottom of the hill, we arrived at Fire In The Hole. This indoor roller coaster has a lower thrill level, but doesn’t involve loosing the feeling in your extremities. The line wasn’t too long, and soon we stepped aboard. The ride is dark, and the cars pass dioramas depicting the story of the Baldknobbers. If you have never heard of them, do yourself a favor and Google it.

The only other ride we visited was The Flooded Mine. This indoor attraction travels at a much slower pace, and foregoes any quick movements. Passengers pile into ore cart shaped boats, which float through along a preset path. Along the way guests are entertained by a series of dioramas showing an underground mine that is in the process of flooding, The prisoners of the mine are setting plans in motion for a daring escape. This ride has an interactive feature by providing an arcade feel with the use of infrared guns for each visitor. In each of the dioramas there are a set of targets that, when hit with light, they set off an assortment of sounds and actions. We decided to just enjoy the ride, but found ourselves highly entertained by the kids in our boat.

Santa is Watching

As we made our way toward the back of the park, we entered Santa Claus Lane. It’s fairly easy to identify, since there are a ton of Santa figures scattered all around. Here was another place that was enchanting to the children, of all ages. In the same part of the park we found Rudolph’s Christmas Town. This area offers some nice photo opportunities, so being kids at heart, we found a willing guest to take our picture. I believe the gingerbread sculptures are designed for kids a wee bit shorter than us, but it worked.

Inside a nearby building, we found people waiting for a turn to pose with characters from the classic claymation show which the area is named for. We decided against waiting in line, but if we had it would have been to pose with Bumble the abominable snow monster.

Plenty of Show Options

Since the weather was less than desirable for rides, we decided to add a couple of shows to our schedule. The first one took place in the Silver Dollar Saloon. The show is called the Frontier Fa-la-La Follies, and runs for about 30 minutes. This old fashioned G-rated show is filled with a variety of short skits, and even includes some audience participation.

The second show we attended was The Living Nativity, which is held in the Riverfront Playhouse. The show is narrated, while actors play out the scenes leading up to the birth of Christ. It was a powerful performance, and well received by the audience. There are other shows that run during the festival, which we did not attend. A Dicken’s Christmas Carol and It’s A Wonderful Life are extremely popular with park guests. There are also some musical performances scattered throughout the park, but we enjoyed the Christmas songs which were being played over the outdoor speakers.

The Reason for Our Visit

As dusk approached, our anticipation for the light displays grew. After so many years of waiting, I know that Crystal was anxious. A trip to the car gave us an opportunity to switch cameras for the evening. As darkness crept up, we started seeing the outlined buildings highlighted in twinkling lights.

The displays are found everywhere in the park. We had seen the advertisements stating that Silver Dollar City had added about 1.5 million lights from the previous year. These were added to the 5 million that were already in use. It is hard to fathom the idea of 6.5 million lights, and I was wondering how they could all be packed into the park. What we discovered were that many were used to create small dioramas, like a set of trees that change color right before your eyes.

As the darkness deepened, we walked through the park admiring the displays. Many of the buildings are completely covered with sheets of lights. Over 1000 Christmas trees dot the park, and each one has its own set of lights. We both were wondering how long it takes to put up such an extensive display.

Making Our Way to Midtown

The center of the park is filled with a light exhibit titled Christmas in Midtown. As we approached from the back of the park, we started to understand how they packed the unbelievable number of lights into the park. As we climbed the hill, a massive display came into view. Lights are everywhere you look. It is difficult to even describe it, let alone take it all in. It seemed like every inch of space was plastered with lights, and there are even a lot of hanging displays. We decided the best approach was to walk a little ways, and then just stop and look all around us. Even doing this, we are certain we missed a lot.

The Christmas at Midtown display is over the top. There are a few light tunnels that guests can walk through, and are quite often filled with people taking selfies. We spent quite a lot of time in this area, but finally the chill gave us reason to return to the shops. The rest of our visit was spent as a mix between indoor and outdoor activities. We visited more shops, and enjoyed looking at the various Christmas displays. As the park hours were ending, we made our way back to our car to head back to our hotel. The purpose of our visit to Branson, Missouri had been to experience the Old Time Christmas Festival, and we could now mark it off our list. How many of you have experienced this over-the-top light display at Silver Dollar City?

Our most recent visit to Branson, Missouri will be one that we will remember for many years to come. This was our first trip during the Christmas season, and we were excited to see the sights. After the four hour drive from Kansas City, (We may have stopped along the way.) our first destination was The Branson Hotel. When I was researching lodging options, this place stood out above the rest. As we pulled in to one of the hotel’s parking spaces, we were anxious to see our home away from home.
We want to thank The Branson Hotel for their hospitality. Rest assured that all opinions are our own.

Historic Beginnings

The Branson Hotel was built in 1903, which was prior to Branson officially becoming a city. The location of the hotel is in the heart of the old downtown Branson, which made it perfect for a base camp location. Since our plans had us visiting the Branson Landing, we knew it was within walking distance. We went in to meet the staff, and were greeted by Lori Hartung, the general manager. She was so welcoming, which is a trait we found in all of the staff members. The hotel is an adults only lodging option, so we knew it would be a peaceful haven from the madness that can come with Branson traffic. After checking in, Lori showed us around the hotel, while giving us some background on the historic building.

Our room was on the first floor, but we took the opportunity to head up to the second floor to see the balcony that overlooks the main street. From here we could watch the traffic and people flow into and out of downtown. Since the weather was a little brisk, we decided to make it a short stay on the balcony. As we were making our way back to our room, Lori pointed out The Notebook room. Those familiar with Branson will recognize the name Harold Bell Wright. The author of the famed novel “Shepard of the Hills” stayed in this room during part of the writing of his book. A massive restoration of the building was undertaken to add bathrooms to each guest room. (Not a common part of construction in 1903.) After this was completed, the hotel was reopened with nine guest rooms. Each room is named, and have theme decorations. It really adds a nice touch to a stay at the hotel, and we have had many people ask which room we chose.

Western Digs at The Branson Hotel

When we contacted the hotel they asked us which room we wanted for our stay. Our reply was to surprise us, and that they did. Since our visit to Branson included a stop at the Dixie Stampede the first evening, staying in the Horseshoe room was quite fitting. The Branson Hotel does not hand out keys to their guests. Instead, we selected a numerical code, which was keyed into the doors to the hotel, as well as our room. This allowed us to pass in and out without digging around for a pass card or key. A really nice option that we wish other lodging locations would incorporate. With our security code in place, we headed out to bring in our luggage. (We don’t travel light, even for just a two night stay.)

Our room was furnished with a king size bed, and plenty of dresser and closet space for our items. A couch sat against the wall opposite the bed, which was perfect for putting on and taking off shoes. The bathrooms are not huge, (Since they were an afterthought.) but are spacious enough for all of our needs. A tub/shower combination was a welcome sight after a long day of exploring. The decor was certainly rustic, and put us in the perfect mood for the evening’s show. After putting away all of our supplies, it was time to head off to the Branson Landing for lunch and some exploring. Lori had reminded us that breakfast is available each morning, and the bar was open in the evenings. We hoped to get a chance to enjoy both of these features.

Getting a Good Start to Our Day

After a long first day, we slept well in our king bed. With no children in the place, it was nice and quiet. Even though our room had a television set, I don’t remember turning it on during our visit. After getting ready for day two, we headed into the Cafe/Bar area for breakfast. Lori was already there, and helped us find a good place to sit. Some of the other hotel guests were already settled in, and enjoying themselves.

We put in our order, and Lori went about fixing us a latte. This was so delicious, and the mugs are big enough to even satisfy Crystal’s caffeine fix. I went with the regular coffee, and we sipped while we awaited our meals.

In hardly any time, our dishes were delivered to our table. The Branson Hotel does not have a kitchen, and has to work from a limited menu. With this in mind, it was even more impressive on the quality of the breakfast we were served. Crystal chose oatmeal, which is her go to dish for breakfast during the week. I opted for the biscuits and gravy, which was really tasty. As we dined, we discussed our plans for the day, which included a visit to Silver Dollar City. With a busy day of exploring in front of us, it was good to get it started with a hearty meal.

A Perfect Ending

After a long day at Silver Dollar City, we were ready for a relaxing night at the hotel. When we arrived back at our lodging, we found a group of guests enjoying the firepit on the outdoor patio. We joined them, and even found the makings for S’mores were handy. The staff at The Branson Hotel certainly have thought of just about everything. After chatting with the others for a while, we stepped inside the bar for a drink. We had spoken with Caroline, one of the bartenders, and she had suggested we stop by before turning in for the night.

When we arrived, she was ready to show off her drink making skills. Since we didn’t arrive with a preconceived choice of cocktails, we let her be our guide. She decided that the S’Mores Cocktail would make a beautiful photo opportunity. We chatted with her, while she prepared this sweet concoction. The crowning touch is to add toasting marshmallows to float on the top. It was a marvelous creation, and tasted just as good as it looks. We thanked Caroline for her hospitality, and headed off to our last night in the hotel’s comfortable bed. In the morning, it was time to say our goodbyes, knowing a return visit was a must. The Branson Hotel closes for updates in January and February each year, which is the off season for most places in Branson. Don’t worry, it will open back up in the spring for another year of peaceful, adults only lodging. Be sure to check this place out on your next visit to Branson, but you will want to make reservations. With only nine rooms, it is certainly a special place to stay.

Our first day in Branson included some time to check out the shops downtown. Our hotel was within walking distance, and the weather was very agreeable for November. We decided to head directly to the Branson Landing, which is an outdoor shopping center that sits along the water’s edge. One of the most unique shops we found was Smith Creek Moonshine.

Still Just A Still

As we strolled through the shopping center, we noticed the old school still in the window of the store. This was enough to draw us in to check out the store. Inside we found that the display included some background information about this liquor production process. When you hear the name moonshine, many people picture a still hidden in the backwoods of the Ozark, Smoky or Appalachian Mountains. While this may have been quite often the case, the production of moonshine also took place in the cities across the nation during prohibition.

Smith Creek Moonshine plays off of the historic period of this business. Most of the decorations in the store evoked thoughts of olden days, and simpler times. While the focus of the store is on the sale of their modern age moonshine, they also feature a sampling of other items. Glasses, apparel, and even candles can be found scattered around the shop. These make good souvenirs and conversation starters.

Belly Up To The Bar

The main draw in the store was definitely the tasting area. A long wooden bar was barely visible with the large number of customers standing around. I made my way over, and squeezed in. My new neighbor noted that there was plenty of room for a new drinking buddy, although I would argue that we were reaching capacity. During my time at the bar, there was certainly an ebb and flow of samplers.

Our hostess was busy dispensing shots of moonshine, as she described each flavor. The exhibition is done in a round robin style. If you remember which flavor you started on, sooner or later she will make it through all of the others in order. With each new flavor, our hostess would describe what to expect, as well as offering ideas for flavor combinations. Some of these sounded intriguing, while others I would pass up. As the flavors flowed, my neighbors became friendlier, as well as a little chatty. After a while, we had cycled through all of the flavors I wanted to sample, so it was time to step away from the bar. It was amazing how well our hostess was able to describe the nuances of each flavor. Of course, her descriptions may have worked to create a pre-existing expectation, which we searched for as we sampled. Either way, most of the flavors had a distinct tartness, and a slight bite.

Smith Creek Moonshine Combinations

Along the walls of the store there were large displays of their namesake products. Each jar was designed to look like old school moonshine, as it has been so often displayed in movies. Mason jars of numerous flavors are displayed in groups that are designed to make tasty combinations. The free tasting was doing its job, as I noticed quite a few shoppers selecting multiple jars for purchase. It had been a nice way to wile away a few minutes, while being entertained by the hostess. Perhaps we will try this again during our visit to Gatlinburg in 2018. Have you ever tried moonshine?
