Whenever I plan a trip itinerary, it needs to include a variety of dining experiences. We hope it will provide enough choices for others to find something they like. Winnipeg has so many options that I struggled to narrow them down. After a day filled with visits to the zoo and botanical gardens, we were hankering for a hearty meal. St. James Burger & Chip Co. looked like the perfect place to refuel. This mom-and-pop shop is popular with the locals, which is a sign of good things to come.
We want to thank Travel Manitoba and Tourism Winnipeg for hosting our visit. Rest assured that all opinions are our own.
So Many Options
Pulling into St. James Burger, we were reminded of one of our favorite drive-in places in Kansas City. Dining is done outdoors but first, we needed to order. The menu is packed with tempting burgers and a laundry list of delectable side dishes. We had to let a few other patrons go ahead of us, while we tried to decide. Once our orders were placed, we headed outside to select our picnic table. It was a beautiful summer day, and we loved the idea of being able to people watch while we dined.
Unboxing Our Meals
The meals were prepared fresh, so it took a few minutes before our name was called. In the meantime, we watched our fellow diners unboxing their treats. When our boxes were filled, we prepared ourselves for the unveiling. Crystal selected the Grilled Classic Chicken Burger, which consists of an entire chicken breast. The sandwich was nestled on a huge bed of freshly cooked fries. (They refer to them as chips.) It was so tempting that she snuck a couple of fries before the pictures were taken. Here’s a good place to remind you how economical the exchange rate is for Americans. Crystal’s $16 Canadian meal is only $11.50 in U.S. dollars.
Tower of Taste
I wasn’t holding back, so I selected the Smashing Stack Big Boi Burger. I thought the name was a mouthful, and then I saw the burger. This thing was huge! It consists of four smashed patties covered in cheese. As if that wasn’t enough, they toss in crispy onions and their homemade Smash sauce. I had to unhinge my jaw just to take a bite. For my side, I selected the Cinnamon Salt Chips, which have that salty-sweet combination I love. My only regret was that I couldn’t come anywhere near to finishing this meal.
We're Not Done Yet!
After our massive meal, we headed to a local mall to walk off some calories. This also gave us a chance to pick up some souvenirs from our first visit to Winnipeg. Once our shopping was complete, we were ready for dessert. Conversations with some locals had clued us in on a popular ice cream shop. Sargent Sundae is a family-owned treat stop located across the street from Assiniboine Park, which is home to the zoo and botanical gardens. As we approached, we could see a line of customers snaking out the door. Waiting in line gave us time to examine the menu, which is filled with sweet treat options.
Dining Like The Locals
The line moved quickly and soon we were exiting with our treats. We found a shaded spot, outside the shop, and devoured our desserts. It was the perfect place to people-watch on a sunny day. We were only on our second day in Manitoba and we were already in love with the region. The similarities to our part of the U.S. made us feel right at home. What stood out was the kindness of the people from this region. There is something to be said for the welcoming spirit of the heartland.
