Join us as we dive into the hidden gems and local favorites that make Southwest Kansas a truly unforgettable experience!

The Fam group was heavily loaded with women, but the author held his own during conversations.

Our First FAM Trip

Stepping into our first FAM trip, we found ourselves surrounded by a lively group of fellow explorers—all women (except for me). They each brought unique insights and energy to the table. As first-timers, we weren’t sure what to expect, but the group’s warm camaraderie quickly set the tone. Our host, Kansas Tourism, was represented by Colby, who would serve many roles during the trip. We are sure that it often felt like herding cats, especially when we all needed that “one special photo” before moving on. Between the laughs, shared stories, and tips exchanged, we developed a connection. Traveling alongside a diverse, tight-knit crew made the experience even more memorable. We were prepared to explore new sights and share in the joy of discovery with people who truly understood the thrill of the road. Now lets go see what SW Kansas has to offer!

The M.T. Liggett Art Environment showcases one of Kansas' grassroots artists.

An Iconic Character

M.T. Liggett was a self-taught, bold artist whose unconventional works have left a lasting mark on Mullinville, Kansas. Known for his fiercely independent spirit, Liggett spent decades crafting sculptures that reflect his unapologetic views on politics, culture, and society. Born in Kansas, he returned to Mullinville after a stint in the Air Force, bringing with him a vision to turn his corner of the prairie into something both provocative and unforgettable. Liggett’s life was as colorful as his art; he thrived on stirring conversation and challenging mainstream beliefs, which he accomplished through each piece of welded art he created.

Unapologetic Artwork

The M.T. Liggett Art Environment is a sprawling outdoor gallery filled with towering metal sculptures, spinning pieces, and vibrantly painted figures. Each work carries a statement that reflects Liggett’s strong opinions on government, society, and local happenings. His art is raw and striking, with imagery that is humorous, controversial, and thought-provoking. Walking through his field of art is like stepping into the mind of someone who dared to say the things many have only thought. His creations made us see life from a fresh perspective, showing that art isn’t always about beauty; sometimes, it’s about sparking dialogue or making a statement.

The Big Well Museum is a testament to the spirit of the residents in Southwest Kansas.

Now, That's a Big Hole!

Our stop at the Big Well Museum in Greensburg, Kansas, was a unique experience that gave us a glimpse into one of the world’s largest hand-dug wells and the resilience of the town around it. We were drawn to the massive, stone-lined structure stretching 109 feet into the earth as we entered. Crystal took the lead, stepping onto the spiral staircase that descends alongside the well’s walls. She demonstrated just how deep this Kansas marvel truly is. As she continued, she felt the air grow cooler and the sense of awe deepened. We could only imagine the grit and determination it took to carve out this massive structure by hand back in 1887. The museum around it offers insight into both the well’s history and Greensburg’s recovery after a devastating tornado, making it a powerful symbol of strength and community spirit.

We enjoyed touring the yurts and catching an amazing Kansas sunset at Horse thief Reservoir.

Winding Up Day 1

Our final Day 1 stop was a visit to Horse Thief Reservoir near Jetmore, Kansas. Pulling in, we discovered a peaceful destination, with scenic views and a relaxing atmosphere. As the sun sank low in the sky, we enjoyed a catered meal, while hearing about the area. After dinner, we were invited to check out one of the cozy, rustic yurts. These are available for stays and provide a unique and comfortable dwelling close to the water’s edge. As we finished our tour, we discovered that the evening sky had transformed into a brilliant palette of yellows, oranges, and pinks. This would make the perfect backdrop for an evening spent outdoors.

The Historic Adobe Museum offers history lessons about Ulysses, Kansas.

Day 2 Begins with History

Our second day found us piling back into the van and hitting the road. The group had developed into a “think tank” where unique perspectives were shared, as well as some interesting stories. We arrived at the Historic Adobe Museum in Ulysses, to delve into the region’s gritty past. While Crystal remained with the group, I wandered off to pursue photos. Walking through the museum, I found myself drawn to the exhibit on Carbon Black Production. It played a pivotal role in the area’s early industry and transformed Ulysses into a bustling center for this unique resource. An exhibit on the Dust Bowl reminded me of the challenges faced by Kansas farmers and families during the early 1930s.

Garden City proved to hold some unique tales.

From Brazen to Bizarre

We traveled to Garden City, where we made a stop at the Finney County Museum. This proved to be an eclectic journey through local history, which left us intrigued and entertained. One of the standout exhibits featured the notorious Fleagle Gang, a group of criminals whose antics captured the headlines throughout the nation. Truman Capote visited the area while researching for his book about the crime. The blend of local lore, literary connections, and quirky attractions made the Finney County Museum a highlight of our trip. We couldn’t help but chuckle at the bizarre exhibit showcasing the world’s largest hairball, a quirky testament to the town’s unique charm and sense of humor.

The House of Stone, in Dodge City, stands as a testament to the creativity of the locals.

Getting the Heck into Dodge City

It had been a few years since we stepped foot in Dodge City. One of the places we missed on our first visit was the House of Stone. This FAM trip would give us another chance. This unique adobe structure was built in the late 19th century. It showcases the extraordinary skill of local artisans who used native materials to create a home that has withstood the test of time. As we explored its rooms, we marveled at the intricate stonework and original furnishings, each telling a story of the pioneers who once called it home. The guided tour brings the past to life, highlighting fascinating anecdotes about the house’s construction and its significance in the community.

At the Boot Hill Distillery, the authors enjoyed a tour and a cocktail.

A Refreshing Stop

Our visit to Dodge City would have been incomplete without a stop at Boot Hill Distillery. Our group was greeted by the warm, inviting atmosphere that echoed the spirit of the Old West. We indulged in a delicious craft cocktail made with the distillery’s signature spirits. The owner led us on a tour, where he wove local lore into the distillery’s history. Sipping on the expertly crafted cocktail, I was reminded of the unique flavors that reflected the essence of Dodge City. It’s a vibrant blend of Wild West history, cultural heritage, and the enduring spirit of community that invites visitors to explore its rich past and lively present.
