Searching for Polar Bears
The Journey to Churchill exhibit in Assiniboine Park Zoo is an animal lover’s paradise and a Winnipeg must-see. The exhibit recreates the Canadian tundra, complete with rocky landscapes, chilly waters, and wild grasses. We felt as if we’d traveled to the northern edge of Manitoba, home to polar bears, caribou, and seals. The zoo has recreated this Arctic environment to perfection, providing a captivating look at the animals that thrive in those rugged conditions. This collection of exhibits was the driving force behind our visit. Our research turned up some amazing videos of their polar bears and we wanted to see them firsthand.
Santa's Helpers
As we moved further into Journey to Churchill, we spotted the Caribou Exhibit. It’s an expansive space that mirrors the animals’ natural habitat, with plenty of room for them to roam and graze. Information panels around the exhibit highlight the caribou’s role in the Arctic ecosystem, their migration patterns, and the ongoing efforts to protect their populations. These majestic creatures, also known as reindeer, are perfectly adapted to the cold. Observing these majestic animals up close was a reminder of the harsh beauty of the northern wilderness and its resilient inhabitants.
Diving into the Exhibit
We arrived at the Underwater Tunnels, which offer a truly unique perspective on some of the zoo’s aquatic residents. Watching the seals dart and dive is mesmerizing, especially from beneath the surface. The tunnel’s glass walls and ceiling allowed us to see them gliding overhead, showcasing their agility and grace. There’s something magical about being submerged in their world as they zip around effortlessly. It’s a perspective we don’t find at our Kansas City Zoo and a highlight of the Journey to Churchill experience. These tunnels mimic the icy waters of the north, and also provide views of the polar bears. Alas, they were nowhere to be seen during our visit. We must keep searching.
Assiniboine Park Success
Exiting the tunnel, we heard a nearby commotion. We hurried around the corner and came face-to-face with our prize. Few things capture the spirit of the north like watching Polar Bears play. We were lucky enough to see them up close as they splashed, wrestled, and even took a few lazy tumbles into the water. Each bear in the zoo has a unique story, with most being rescues from northern Manitoba. These bears were unable to survive in the wild, often due to orphaning or injury. The zoo provides them a safe haven where they can thrive, while serving as ambassadors for their species. This exhibit highlights the zoo’s commitment to caring for endangered species and educating visitors about Arctic wildlife.
Lunch Break at Gather
With all that walking, a lunch break was in order. We made our way to Gather, a charming café tucked within The Leaf’s botanical gardens. The setting is as relaxing as the food is delicious, with floor-to-ceiling windows offering views of lush greenery. Gather’s menu focuses on locally sourced ingredients, prepared with a unique twist on classic dishes. Crystal enjoyed the Coconut Korma Curry, while I chose the Beef Short Rib Ragu. Both dishes were delightful and we lingered over the fresh flavors. It’s a perfect spot to recharge before diving back into the park’s many attractions.
Exploring The Leaf
The Leaf is more than just a botanical garden; it’s a celebration of Indigenous life and knowledge. Each section of the garden highlights native plants and the cultural significance they hold for Indigenous communities. Interpretive signs and displays explained to us how these plants have been used for centuries, from traditional medicine to ceremonial practices. As we explored, we gained a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the role it plays in Indigenous culture. The Leaf does a remarkable job of blending beauty and education, inviting guests to connect with the land and understand the symbiotic relationship between nature and Indigenous life.
Inviting Settings
As we continued exploring The Leaf, we noticed the thoughtfully placed seating areas. These spots offer visitors a chance to rest, reflect, and absorb the gardens’ serenity. Each seating option is strategically placed to provide comfort and unique views. We found ourselves stopping to discuss what we’d seen, share favorite moments, and take in the garden’s calming ambiance. The seating arrangements encourage quiet contemplation or the sharing of personal experiences. It was a welcoming retreat from the bustle of our blogging life.
